 Help installing apps

by lieobry on: Apr 22 2007

Score 50%

I'm newbie and I want to install an application (this one for example:http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/keeper?content=26178) from this site. I download the .tar.gz file but I don't know what to do with this. I try to compile it with command make but there is an error. Can anyone help me step by step? Or is there a way to add this page as repository so that I can download applications from Synaptic?
Thanks a lot!

Well, the generic way to install something is:

./configure
make
make install

You have to do ./configure to set up files make needs, and make you know, but make install puts the compiled stuff where you can use a simple command.

TIPS: Try "less INSTALL" and "./configure --prefix=[install path]"

I have the same problem, i was trying to install the Qtcurve stryle for my Kubuntu feisty but when i do the make part it shows
seo@seo-desktop:~/Desktop/green/QtCurve-KDE3-0.48.5$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

so, nothing happens.
Could you please teach me how to compile it properly? The generic ./configure, make, install make is not that handy sometimes

I guess every newbie around has the same problem so it would be really nice if you guys post some kind of general tutorial, a how to install link would be great!!!

guess you opened a root shell session (sessions: settings -> 3rd tab) and saved as default settings
open a default session
"konsole -type shell"
and save this as default
(don't run the above command as root!)

 KDM restart, halt

I'm trying to write a kdm theme, but the restart and halt buttons don't seem to do anything. Any bright ideas?

Running Kubuntu 7.04 on an Acer Aspire 3022WLMi.

Whether or not I can get that working, I'll hopefully post it in a couple of days.

Thanks

Easy way to make a KDM theme:

Download a premade KDM theme (I recommend debianpool)
Edit the image files
Done

 by baz111 on: May 7 2007

I am running PClinuxOS V .94. I found
an app on this page I want to install, Kleansweep.
The scons installer for ths app
gives me an error message
"qt is in /usr/lib/qt3/
Checking for uic : uic was not found- set QTDIR put it in your PATH ?"

I do not find "uic" anywhere in my
file system.

The install of this distro put some
qt3 components on my system including
qt3,libqt3,libqassistantclient1, pythonqt,pinentryqt,libavahi-qt3_1,
libqassistant1

Can someone tell me what additional
packages I would need to install
before installing kleansweep?

 History of GNU/Linux

Hi !

I hope this is not out of context to post here:
I believe that somewhere on this forum, there is a chart showing how the various Operating Systems developed out of GNU/Linux and Debian.

It is in the style of coloured lines leading out from a central Core on the left of the page. I think it may be called something like "Timeline" although I find nothing from searching that title?

Any info' would be much appreciated. :-)

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
