Updated:  Jun 30 2008

Description:

This is not a complete, packaged app, but a couple scripts using normal KDE (3 or 4) and Linux tools to provide better display of weather info than KDE's weather applet. It downloads the information from the US national weather service and maps from weather.com. Two launchers on the main menubar bring up the window separately. Full details and instructions are in the readme.

This is a solution that worked for me, not being a coder. You have to make it work for you. It's an idea and a set of tools. It's also US-centric, but someone may take the idea and make it work just as well anywhere. I hope someone finds it as useful as I do.

Changelog:

30 June 2008
Added desktop files and instructions for KDE4.

23 March 2008
Since it seems to work well enough, I changed the scripts to make temporary files invisible.

 kde4

In kde4 you get a nice WeatherEngine with plasma. This makes it really easy for artists to design such weather-applets. What i read you will be able to use C++, Ruby, Python, Java-Script and more to do this. But you dont need to get deep in how to recieve the data. You get it from The engine! yout just need to ask for it ;)

kde4 will rock! All i saw until now really rocks! Can't wait for it ;)

Sad thing is, you didn't need a "weather engine" to do it right. What I did with bash scripts, KDE devs couldn't do with whatever language they were using? KDE4 might rock at some point, but it's not here yet. ;-)

 weather source/bin

You call weather in your shell script. Did you get that program from somewhere else or write it yourself? Please share where you found it or if you wrote it the source file you created.

Thanks,
JaneGirl

It´s a standard package called ¨weather-util¨ in debian-based distros like Ubuntu. The original download of the source is at http://fungi.yuggoth.org/weather/src.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
