Edit File

Link:  http://
Downloads:  1675
Submitted:  Nov 21 2005
Updated:  Mar 10 2006

This adds a new service menu allowing to open a file to edit:
- as text
- as text with UTF-8 encoding
- as hexadecimal
Files can be opened as user or as root

- English
- German
- Hungarian
- Italian
- Polish
- Portuguese

It depends on:
- kate (to edit files as text)
- khexedit (to edit files as hexadecimal)
- kdesu (to open files as root)

Version 0.3 (2006-03-10):
- Added Italian translation (thanks to Andrea S.)
- Added Polish translation (thanks to Sylwester Gruszka)
- Now there two versions of this service menu, one that shows up for all kind of files and the other one that doesn't show up with some files (like video, audio, compressed files) (thanks to Sylwester Gruszka for the code)

Version 0.2.1 (2006-03-09):
- Added Hungarian translation (thanks to Paul Körössy).
- Removed keyboard shortcuts from submenus, as they don't work in kde 3.5.

Version 0.2 (2005-11-23):
- Files can be open as root too (sugested by beda22, with implementation based on "Edit as Root" service menu by gammaknife, see in http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=11998).
- Added keyboard shortcuts.
- Added German translation (thanks to Lars Behrens).

Version 0.1 (2005-11-20):
- First release.
- Open file to edit as text, as text with UTF-8 encoding and as hexadecimal.
- English and Portuguese translations.

I would suggest an additional feature like: "as text by root" This should ask for the root-password and start kate with the file.

There is already a service menu for open text files as root (Edit as Root, in http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=11998). But, I apreciate your sugestion and I will integrate that in a new version of "Edit File" to allow to open all files as root. Thanks for the tip.

To install any service menu just copy the *.desktop file to ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/ (for one user) or to /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/ (as root, for all users)

Another easy way to install service menus is through the Add Action Service Menu (http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=11435) who adds a service menu (Install Service) to install other service menus.

be nice if the command was "kate -u %u" so that the existing kate window was used instead of opening an additional one

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
