Description:

KPackageKit is the KDE interface for PackageKit

This is the brand new KPackageKit 0.6.1 and the last KPackageKit version (renaming the project).

The highlights of this version is the New! User Interface, most bugs/wishes were fixed and for Debian based distros I've added debconf support.

Hope you enjoy KPackageKit, and please report bugs, make wishes so we can improve this application.

BUGS goes to bugs.kde.org

-----------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT:
KPackageKit itself can do nothing without PackageKit.
So have it installed before.

The file is in 7zip format since the site limits are
too low and only with 7z I can put the file here.
-----------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION

Well now that you decide to install it. Be careful :D no warranty is given..

Requirements:
AFTER INSTALLING LOGOUT AND LOGIN SO KDED CAN LOAD THE KPACKAGEKIT PLUGIN.
(also, make uninstall #from your old build dir)

PackageKit >= 0.6.2
KdeLibs headers of Kde4
KDE >= 4.3

Compiling:
- $ cd KPackageKit # here is KPackageKit dir
- $ mkdir build && cd build
- $ cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/
- $ make
- $ su
- # make install

Enjoy :)

 Feature request

by mirzaD on: Mar 18 2010

Could you please add (better) option for browsing packages like searching inside category(games), and possibly show more information like ubuntu software center does, rating and optional image(icon)?

I've planned to improve the search on the list when there are alread packages there (no time yet),
for the others it's just not possible for now...

 terrible

by danizmax on: Mar 22 2010

This software is not usable by normal user.

Normal users shouldn't be presented with 15 packages when they enter VLC for example.
How the hell should they know what package to install? This is not a power user application nor simple one.

Till you bring back the view by application (http://www.packagekit.org/img/gpk-application-groups.png) that was once in use in the past (by kubuntu) this application will remain useless for most of the people.

So please add the application view to next release.

1. If you don't like seeing 15 vlc related packages complain to your distro.

2. If you want to see GNOME packages just click on the combo box and select GNOME desktop.

FYI Both applications have exactly the same functionality.

well it's not package related since all package managers have dependencies.

And I didn't meant to make a bad comment, but I can't understand why the application view is available in gnome, but not in KDE.

There is no such application view that talks with PackageKit, you are probably confusing with some other application.
That screen shot from gnome packagekit is showing the gnome desktop group... just that...
(which also works in kpk)

hmm ok i understand :/

So how hard would it be to add this feature and is it planned for the future?

It would realy help a lot of people to get used to KDE/Linux.

It would be even better if they make a Kubuntu-version of the Ubuntu Software Center.

It would be even better if they make a Kubuntu-version of the Ubuntu Software Center. But I don't think Canonical wants to do that unfortanetly.. :(

Yea it's such a shame for a good desktop to be left behind by canonical.

 Waiting for service to start?

by mambasoft on: Apr 6 2010

Hi, I'm working on adopting kpackagekit in the openmamba distribution but when attempting a package upgrade I can go no further than the message "Waiting for service to start" in the "Updating packages" window.
packagekitd is running and installation with pkcon works just fine, as it spawns the password dialog provided by polkit-kde. Looking at the sources I find it difficult to understand which service the program is waiting for...can I get some help on this? Thanks!

Please tell me which distro, backend, and version of PackageKit and KPackageKit that are you using.

The distro is openmamba (milestone2 devel), PackageKit is version 0.6.3, KPackageKit version 0.6.0. PackageKit backend is smart (1.3) which uses apt4rpm style repositories.

I haven't tried gnome packagekit yet and I'll do this asap.
About package search in kpk, yes it works and also updates are correctly detected and shown.

I'm having the same issue on Fedora 11. If I close kpackagekit kill the kpackagekitsmar process, then start kpackagekit up again it works again for a while. I have to do this every time it get's stuck "waiting for services to start"
