Depends on  KDE 4.x
Downloads:  64
Submitted:  Feb 23 2013

Description:

This runner finds synonyms using google translate.
It supports two different syntax:

Syntax: =searchterm

→ This will find synonyms for searchterm.
The source language will be automatically detected by google.
When a word exists in different languages you can use the following syntax:

Syntax: =language searchterm

A list of all supported languages you can find here:
https://developers.google.com/translate/v2/using_rest?hl=de#language-params

Please note: If you are looking up synonyms for an english word you always have to use \"=en \"

Example: =en house

this will find synonyms for the english word \"house\"

Example: =maison

this will find synonyms for \"maison\"

Simple, isn\'t it? :-)

Please note that this is an early version of the plugin.
There are three main problems right now:

API

At the moment the runner uses Google Translate for finding synonyms.
But for some words Google doesn\'t provide any synonyms.
So if you know a better free API please let me know and I may implement it.
Maybe in a future version dictionary.com is used.

Syntax

The syntax is not perfect especially when looking up english words.
Cause the runner it uses Google translate, there have to be a language the word is translated into.
In the default case this is english because this leads into the best results.
And because Google won\'t translate english into english we have to specifie a different target language.
So the runner needs to know if the word is english to change the target language.

If you have some ideas how to make it even more comfortable, please let me know!

Results

I can\'t guarantee the runner will work penfectly.
If you find a word the runner doesn\'t provide any synonyms please let me know and I\'ll fix it.
But please check via Google Translate wheater there Google provides synonyms!

Thanks for your help!

hi, you were mentioning looking for suggestions of an alternative free API?

http://www.wordreference.com/docs/api.aspx

Word Reference has great quality, so I hope it would be implemented.
Let me know what you think.

Otherwise thanks for this usefull soft.
;)

Thanks for your comment, but I don't think it's possible to integrate WordReference. They allow access only via API key and only 600 querys/hour.

So the only solution would be to integrate WordReference, but each user has to apply for an api key on its own and insert it somewhere. But this is not really a smooth solution.

Hmm, thats dissapointing, I didn't realize such was the state of their API.
Its a shame, because their content is really quite good.

thanks for looking into it though.

 Kinda works

Hi, I seem to be able to make it work only with english. And sometimes it closes krunner unexpectedly (not crashes, just closes)

The syntax conflicts with the calculator runner syntax and this does seem to cause crashes if both runners are active.

Very nice idea!

Thanks for the feedback. Hm strange, I never had trouble with the calculater. Though KRunner has reached his end of life (nearly). I'm not going to put much effort in this, at the moment. But expect a better version for KDE 5.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
