Description:

*** Update 8/19/09: Put all of the logos into one file to work better with the KDE-look web site, click the DOWNLOAD link below to view all side-by-side ***

Copied from the Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1240699

Ok, I've been wanting to do this for a while...

Basically, when I look at the Kubuntu logo, the three "8-tooth" gears on the logo look like small snowflakes to me.

Example: http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3527/kubuntulogo.jpg

Now... When looking at the KDE logo, I feel the gear is more "iconified" and less... well... complicated. For some reason I've always felt the KDE logo doesn't seem to be portrayed well by simply replacing the ubuntu circles with small gears.

Example: http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8575/kde4logo.png

So, I did some work on the laptop using a live cd and Gimp. I've attached 9 mock-up logos hoping for feedback. Click the links below to see each mock-up.

Cheers.

P.S. I am a fan of Kubuntu and I do like the logo, just looking for some artistic opinions, and maybe some feedback. I own 2 Ubuntu and 1 Kubuntu shirt, so I do like the current logo as I proudly wear it on my back. :)

License:
The original Kubuntu logo is a trademarked logo, so usage needs to adhere to the ubuntu trademark policy:

http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy

The blue logo portions have been created from scratch using GIMP, but are identical in color and size to the official Kubuntu logo, so certain rights may be limited.

That said, the artwork is Creative Commons-by unless otherwise restricted by Ubuntu or Canonical.

 overview

An overview or an easier way to see all images at once would have been good.

Could'nt you upload it to Flickr or something similar?

Alternativly maybe a nice pdf / Impress presentation?

 Comments on the logo mock-ups

I do see the point in creating a new logo: the current kubuntu logo is a bit "overloaded" for my opinion. In particular when you render it pretty small, the gears just look fiddly.

Your proposals look promising to me. As soon as you have a single image containing all variants, I will gladly comment on the different variants in particular.

From me you'll get a thumbs up. I'm not using KUbuntu, but I have had a look at it as I'm not always happy with the hardware support (probably more a reckognition problem) in openSUSE.

Sorry, they should be fixed now. I had some bad cross-linking going on there.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
