Description:

Kuote is an applet for the KDE panel, inspired by Gnome's Wanda the Fish. It displays an animated character (a fish by default), which pops up quotes generated by the fortune(6) program when clicked (and optionally shows them in tooltips, too).

Kuote supports kioslaves for both the animation file and fortune files (fortune directories still work from local filesystems only). This means that you can enter any URL, not only local file names. Try for example this fortune file available over WWW: http://hektor.umcs.lublin.pl/~mikosmul/computing/inet-fortune
It contains only two quotes, so for testing purposes use it as the only fortune file or assign it a high probability if you want to actually see these fortunes.

Note that if you make fortunes available on the Web or any other medium, you need to make both the fortune file and the corresponding .dat index file available. However, you should only enter the former one in the configuration dialog box - the other one will be downloaded automatically.

Features
* support for user-defined animations (file format compatible with Wanda the Fish)
* run fortune or any other program to generate quotes
* fortune can be configured through the GUI

Changelog:

2005-01-05 (version 0.9.3)
* added new animation: "See, Hear, Speak" (CC-BY-NC-SA license) - thanks to Mark Riedesel [Klowner]
* added French translation (thanks to Nicolas Ternisien)
* added "Next" button to fortune dialog
* fixed a memory leak associated with dialog boxes

2004-12-14 (version 0.9.2)
* added kioslave support for animation and fortune files (fortune dirs still work from local filesystems only)
* small usability improvements
* reduced animation flicker
* new eye candy when mouse is over the animation

2004-12-07 (version 0.9.1)
* removed dependency on KDE 3.3 (this time for real)
* fixes in .lsm file
* slightly reduced animation flicker
* output of fortune is now decoded according to locale-defined charset

2004-12-02 (version 0.9)
* settings are now saved and restored correctly
* made GUI for selecting fortune file sets work
* removed dependency on KDE 3.3
* 'Consider file sizes in probabilities' now works correctly

2004-11-20 (version 0.8)
* initial release
* saving settings doesn't work yet
* custom fortune file sets can't be selected from the GUI yet
* other things mostly work

 0.9.3 won't compile

After finding where the damn KDE headers were (aptitude install kdebase-dev for Kubuntu) I finally got it to configure

However it will not compile:

kuote.cpp:153: error: 'Config' was not declared in this scope

I'm not Michal so I'm not in a position to update the package, however I peeked at the source.

By adding the following line

Configuration& Config();

just before the

#endif

in kuote-0.9.3/src/configuration.h

you should be able to get it to compile.

Thanks a lot, now I can compile it but I don't know how can I do to launch kuote... There are no executable files installed in my PC after the command "make install"...

The install procedure ultimately boils down to putting it where KDE expects it so you can just "Add Applet" from the panel menu and KDE finds it without problem.

Disclaimer: I hacked it rather than doing it 'the right way.' The right way would be to mess around with passing the configure script different paths until it puts everything (via 'make install') in the right place. But the paths used in configure weren't immediately intuitive to me, so I installed and manually copied the necessary files to my correct system paths.

The default install locations for kuote (when I ran it) were /usr/local/kde/share/apps/
and /usr/local/kde/lib/

I moved the following files..
//The description file that makes it appear in the "Add Applets" list
/usr/local/kde/share/apps/kicker/applets/kuote.desktop
-> /usr/share/apps/kicker/applets/

//The directory with all the animations & stuff kuote relies on
/usr/local/kde/share/apps/kuote
-> /usr/share/apps/

//The actual executable files (not a standalone app, but a library that gets linked with KDE code)
/usr/local/kde/lib/kuote_panelapplet.la
and kuote_panelapplet.so
-> /usr/share/lib/kde3/

Obviously the destination paths on your system may be different (I'm running Kubuntu 6.10) but the files involved are the same ;)

The two paths you have to find are your apps/ and your kde library path.
After you've moved everything you should be able to just 'Add Applet'.

I suggest you run 'make install' so you can check its output and verify where it's installing. Then you can copy (or move) the files and run 'make uninstall' afterwards, to clean up the original (wrongly placed) mess.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
