 Emulate KDE3 background blend?

by chenlevy on: Mar 23 2011
Score 50%

I am looking to reproduce a KDE3 feature on KDE4:

The background settings in KDE3 allow to select a background picture and to blend it with a color, or a gradient.

After giving up on finding the feature in KDE4 proper, I got here to look of an extension that have a similar feature.

Also I realize that I might be satisfied with the blending of 2 background images. So I found this plasma script that seem to have the capabilities I am looking for, and just need to be simplified.

If all else fail, I will try to dive into this code, and pear it down to what I need. Naturally I will be thankful if you consider doing this - resulting in a new plasmoid. Also if you know of something that reproduce the KDE3 background image blending feature in KDE4 it will make me so very happy.

Anyway, thank you for your fine work.

Your background is a great idea, but I have some wishes.

1. Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 featured a wallpaper with 4 states: night, sunrise, day, sunset. Can you support that?

2. Will day and night wallpapers smoothly change? You know, the transition between day and night isn't instant, and your Plasma background should be aware of that.

Thanks in advance, and great work!

1. sunrise and sunset pictures are possible but I'm not sure when I have time for that. Patches are welcome :-)

2. It blends the pictures in dusk and dawn (sun is between 0° and -6°) so pictures are smoothly changed.

Magnificent concept, with some errors in Oneric

Thank you so much for writing this. Would you believe I've been manually changing my wallpaper twice a day, every day, for the last 2 months? This is *exactly* what I needed (and the idea of having it adjust when it does it by calculating times of long / lat is *stunning*!)

Unfortunately, despite installing plasma-scriptengine-python, I get no options when choosing the day night wallpaper from the Desktop Settings. Frequently plasma also crashes when choosing day night wallpaper stating:

plasma-desktop crashed with ImportError in /home/user/.kde/share/apps/plasma/wallpapers/day-and-night/contents/code/main.py: No module named plasmascript

Any ideas?

- Does '$ plasmawallpaperviewer -p day-and-night' work?
- What KDE version you have (Works in Kubuntu + KDE 4.7.0)?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
