kprinter

   4.7

KDE Printing

Score 58%
Minimum required   KDE 4.x
Downloads:  510
Submitted:  Dec 31 2011

Description:

kprinter is back for kde-4. I grabbed the kdeprint sources from kde4-playground, fixed a few bugs and crashes, and packaged them for opensuse via OBS here http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cyberbeat

kprinter works good for me. kjobviewer seems to crash when closing. I would be very glad to get some help in finding the crash causes.

Many thanks to the person, who did the main work by porting kdeprint from kde-3 to kde-4.

I tested this package only by building against kde-4.7.x.

can you describe exactly what you did, and perhaps provide a document, where it fails?

printing a jpg to pdf

A print error occurred. Error message received from system:

gs -q -dSAFER -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=$out{/home/smiley/print.pdf} -sPAPERSIZE=letter -c .setpdfwrite -f /tmp/kde-smiley/kdeprint_zWUyyyFg : execution failed with message:
-------------------------
but printing same jpg to ps works
===================================

printing plain text to PDF and PS works if I click the "convert" option when the window pops up but not if I select "keep", the print.ps and print.pdf files are created but empty
==============================
printing .doc files to ps or pdf also failed

thanks for your feedback. I tested printing from a jpeg and this did not even work with kprinter/kde3 because of a bug in the script "imagetops".

I fixed that for me, as a workaround try replace the line 31 in /usr/bin/imagetops to

magictype=`echo $magic | sed 's/\(\w\+\)\/\(\w\+\).*/\2/'`

btw: kprinter's main use is printing from ps-files. doc/pdf/.. are not supported, although it is possible to extend kprinter with filters via xml-definitions which define the shell-commands to use for the pre-filtering.

Can you try to submit you changes back upstream? This will perhaps ensure a resurrection of kprinter...

I don't think kprinter will reappear in official kde-releases in the future, especially as print-dialog in applications. nevertheless I will try to get my changes into the playground-svn-repository at some point.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
