 Looks very nice

 by Yaba on: Jan 12 2004

However it would be better to be able to specify an install directory other than /usr. My KDE Directory is /opt/kde3.2 for example.

Edit qstars-0.1/qstars.pro:

share.path = /opt/kde3.2/...

Run:

qmake; make; make install

 wont compile

 by Spiral Man on: Jan 12 2004

you need to add the lines:

#include
#include

to main.cpp to get this to compile.

also, i cannot seem to get to the setup window (clicking setup doesnt do anything but reload the preview).

oops, damn html

the files being included are cmath and cstdlib (without the .h suffixes of course), so this has nothing to do with kde.

It compiled for KDE 3.2 beta2 without the include lines. However I also cannot open the setup screen.

I compiled it as mentioned in the readme and moved /usr/local/bin/qstars to /opt/kde3.2/bin and /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/QStars.desktop to /opt/kde3.2/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/QStars.desktop.

I can run qtstars -setup from the command line though.

I use KDE 2.2.2. I can not to resolve this problem :(
/usr/local/bin/ - this is correct path for local software.

1)I reccomend upgrading, there have been vast improvements in kde since 2.2.2

2)$KDEDIR is a much more appropriate place for screensavers since kde doesn't look in /usr/local for them.

I'm running Slackware 9.0 and had to make the following modifications to the "main.cpp" file:

#include //for srand()
#include //for time(0)

then it compiled fine

#include < time.h >
#include < stdlib.h >
(of course minus those spaces)
are the ones you want to add
and for me I had to
copy usr/local/bin/qstars to /usr/include/kde/bin/
and bingo it shows up in the screensavers list :)

cheers mobtek

Hi Andi
I followed the instruction in the readme but ended up with an error. What do you think it is?

You need update Qt-library. Try 3.3.3 version (or 3.2 if possible).

Also you can replace this code (QApplication::applicationDirPath () call) by string "/usr/local/bin/".

Hi Andi,

Sorry I don't follow.

Also you can replace this code (QApplication::applicationDirPath () call) by string "/usr/local/bin/".

I'm great with hardware, not so good with software (yet). Could you provide a little more detail.

At the moment I can't upgrade to 3.1.

You need to replace this string in mainwindow.cpp:

static QString appdir = qApp->applicationDirPath();

by:

static QString appdir = "/usr/local/bin/";

Hi
Well it installed but it doesn't seem to work properly. I know it depends on 3.2.

If there's a setup, it's not working. And all I get is the star field, which is very kool but sadly no ships or planets.

Thanks,

The Borg Queen

 Mandrake?

How do you install this on Mandrake?
I am not familiar with KDE setup. As far as I see it uses xscreensaver to take care of the job.

qstars -setup runs fine

Now how do I add the screensaver to the option list and how do I select it?

No, it does not use the xscreensaver. After installation (with make install) required links will be added to KDE Control Center. Run it.

After make install I can see that the files are copied and a .desktop entry is put in the right place:

cp -f "qstars.desktop" "/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/"

Now the problem is that in the KDE Kontrol Center/LookNFeel/ScreenSavers I cannot locate the QStars entry.

The screensavers are grouped by categories (like Desktop distortions which is one) and QStars is below none of them. While all .desktop entries are in the same directory (level) I do not understand where kde reads that it should group them by categories?

I also tried to edit manually the config file to add the qstars.desktop entry like this:

$cd ~/.kde/share/config
$vi kdesktoprc

QStars did not run.

You need to copy the file qstars.desktop to ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers and to ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk-simplified/.hidden/ScreenSavers
then select it from your KDE Control Centre

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
