Your update has corrected the gap issue on my setup. =) For the record my screen resolution is 1280x1024. Thanks!

Thank you for the feeback.

I will upload a 0.4 version soon. I get a cool result with theming the user entry, password entry and the user list. They have now pretty rounded borders :)
This is something I don't see in many other kdm theme.

 Nice idea, but needs reworking

by arkascha on: Apr 15 2009

The script does not work at all under openSUSE / SLES. I wonder why I read reports about it working under other distributions. I could imagine it working when being logged in as root under kde, though I cannot really imagine anyone doing that.
Calling the install script via sudo greps the wrong users settings (if any), calling it without obviously results in permission errors.
Nevertheless a nice idea, certainly worth to invest a few hours to work out the correct hooks how to extract the current users settings...

Thanks, it is what I doubted.
I will install a virtual machine with opensuse and try to make it work.

Strange.

On the live cd opensuse 11 with kde 4.1.3, the name of the current plasma theme is not stored in plasmarc :(

I am using OpenSUSE 11.1 and KDE4.2.2 and was able to get your theme generator to work. OpenSUSE places the plasma files under the user not root. I have emailed you my install.sh file to review.

Let me know if this helps or if you need any additional information.

Thanks for you work!

"OpenSUSE places the plasma files under the user not root."

Ubuntu too. But with ubuntu sudo `kde4-config --localprefix` return home/user/.kde4 not /root/.kde4

It is the suggestion of Rasi that don't work for everybody.

 good idea as such

Hell this is a great idea, but I think your approach to this is wrong, kdm has to be extended and maybe even rewritten... atm it's just a relict of old times, hope this gets better, have you submitted the idea at http://forum.kde.org/kde-brainstorm-f-83.html ? #kde-devel at irc.freenode.org should also be a good place to bring in some input :) with kind regards

"I think your approach to this is wrong, kdm has to be extended and maybe even rewritten... atm it's just a relict of old times"

I agree with you, my script is just an easy way for me to show what it is possible to do: just a proof of concept.

Moreover, I don't know if kdm must be rewritten, kdm4 have svg support and use xml for theming, it is already a great piece of code (Imho, in comparision ksplash is not as advanced).
Yes it may be extended: for example, it would be great if it could change his theme/wallpaper when you select a user in the list (something I can't do with shell script).

"Have you submitted the idea at http://forum.kde.org/kde-brainstorm-f-83.html ? #kde-devel at irc.freenode.org should also be a good place to bring in some input :)"

No I haven't, one reason is that my english skills are to poor to explain what I want. If someone want to do that, I would be grateful.

I haven't tried the script yet, but you get a + from me just for the great idea.

Yes, a kdm with plasma would be great but I don't have the requested knowledge.

Anyway it's too late to apply now; let's hope that it got picked. (I don't think it's been announced yet, has it?)

I hope too.

I don't find news on the net about that, except this proposition: http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-devel/2009-March/004493.html

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
