 openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.3RC - FAIL

by terrencecoggins on: Jul 6 2009

Score 50%

I'm using KDE 4.3 RC on openSUSE 11.1, and I can't get this installed at all... At the step where one must "execute cmake," (however the hell I'm supposed to do that, but) I go to the terminal and type in "cmake CMakeLists.txt" and even tried "cmake ." and I get the following error:
"
-- The C compiler identification is unknown
-- The CXX compiler identification is unknown
CMake Error: your C compiler: "CMAKE_C_COMPILER-NOTFOUND" was not found. Please set CMAKE_C_COMPILER to a valid compiler path or name.
CMake Error: your CXX compiler: "CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER-NOTFOUND" was not found. Please set CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER to a valid compiler path or name.
CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:84 (MESSAGE):
ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in
/home/terry/.kde4/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps;/etc/kde4/share/apps
Call Stack (most recent call first):
CMakeLists.txt:5 (find_package)[/code]
"
The repositories for openSUSE doesn't have any of the files listed as 'requirements,' so I'm not sure how others got it to work on their openSUSE, but can someone who did lend me a helping hand?

It turns out there are different dependencies for opensuse. The link lists them.

About requirements: I am not able to list them. I think it is the same requierement than other plasmoid and qt apps. I install kde developpment package until it works.

If somebody can help me to do the list, I will be grateful.

For openSUSE you need to have:

"kernel-source", "cmake", "make", "gcc-c++", and "kdebase4-workspace-devel" -- courtesy of BenderBendingRodriguez @ openSUSE forums (Install kernel-source, make and gcc-c++ and kdebase4-workspace-devel)

I'm also using KDE 4.3 RC and am having the black-background problem. Do you mind explaining in a bit more detail how to fix the problem? I don't know where the background files are, or how to change them.

i had a different background picture for each desktop i had to turn that effect off then run the kdmthemgenerator again
if you haven't set that up then that isn't the same problem your having if you know how to set that up then you should know how to turn it off

if you click on the cashew icon in top right corner zoom out to see the 4 desktops if you only see 1 then you havent set it up you can add 3 more and you should get a pop up in the left corner the last option is configure plasma click it another box will pop up put a check mark in the first box then you can have different wallpapers for each desktop but that is what i had to turn off to get kdm theme generator to work

I've only got one wallpaper set - air - so I guess I'm having problems for a completely different reason.

"Ah ok, you use the weather wallpaper."

I have a configuration for the weather wallpaper but the wallpaper I currently use is a simple image. I think that the problem arises just from this fact: there are more plugins configured, but only one used. The image shown should be the one of the plugin used.

" I believed that my program could handle any Plasma::Wallpaper plugin. But is not the case :("

Ok

Quote:

The weather wallpaper is tricky because the actual wallpaper is dynamically changed... I really don't know whether it makes sense to use this program with the weather plugin... which of the many possible wallpapers should be used for kdm?

I would like it uses the currently used wallpaper. The program creates a new plugin instance, so, with wallpaper randomly choosen, it can be different than the current.

Quote:

" When you change a wallpaper, there is a delay before plasma-appletsrc is saved.
The generator use this config file to load Plasma::Wallpaper objects and save them as a png files.
If plasma-appletsrc is not updated then Plasma::Wallpaper objects are loaded with a previous configuration.
So you must wait few second before execute the generator."

Thank you for the tip! I did not know anything of this delay. Maybe you could trigger (in some way) an update of the plasma config files before you read them? I don't know if it's possible, just an idea.

It would be better if the program could directly communicate with plasma, not use config files. But I think it is missing (by security ?) in kde 4.2. I must do more investigation in kde 4.3.

Quote:

" If you know a way to list the current Plasma::Wallpaper's (without reading the config file and recreate them): I'm interested."

Perhaps I found a way to use the current wallpaper even if there are several plugins in the configuration. The plugin actually used is set by the "wallpaperplugin" entry of the Containment. So I tried to put this in line 651 of KdmThemeGenerator.cpp:

QString wallpaperpluginused = containment.readEntry("wallpaperplugin");

and to change line 664 as follows:

if (w!=NULL and plugin == wallpaperpluginused)

For me, it's working (tested with image and color plugins), but I don't know if it breaks things for others.

Ok I will try that.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
