 Repository?

 by Xplorer4x4 on: Jul 12 2012

As a new Kubuntu user, I generally try to avoid compiling from source, but I also like to keep my every day apps up to date. This is one of my every day updates but the version offered by Canonical in the official ubuntu repositories is a few versions behind. So I looked to see if a PPA was available on launchpad for this program. I found the source code offered there, but no packages. I also found this page, obviously, but I only see 32 bit binaries available. I wondered if you would consider putting the ppa to use and offering 64 bit binaries? If not a PPA, any type of compatible repository would be great.

On http://kid3.sourceforge.net are current packages for the latest Ubuntu release and the last LTS release, however only 32-bit packages because I have only a 32-bit installtion. If you want a 64-bit version of Kid3 2.1, you can try the package for the next Ubuntu release http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/kid3. Normally, this should also work with Ubuntu 12.04.

Sorry for the late response but thank you! I been using this method for awhile with only one problem. Not sure if this is a bug or something but I prefer to use the format %{track}. %{artist} - %{title}but when I perform the automatic renaming it always comes out as %{track} %{artist} - %{title}. Notice the later lacks a period after the track number. Is there something special I need to do to include a period after the track number?

I can not reproduce this. You can type whatever you like into the format combo box. It will try to complete the text entered with the values which are already in the list of the combo box, maybe this is replacing your format. But this should not prevent you from entering your format - just go on and edit it. If you want to edit the predefined entries of the format combo boxes, you can edit the line starting with "FormatItems" in ~/.kde/share/config/kid3rc or delete the line to get the default entries.

So I played with the file as you suggested, and the problem still persists. The file gets renamed to %{track} %{artist} - %{title}. It refuses to pass the . to the file name despite kid3 renaming the tracks. I am using Kid3 2.1 on Kubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 x64.

Ok so I tried again, and it worked this time. I just played with the To and From buttons, hit save, and they were changed. I will try to play with it some more and see if I can figure out exactly what is going on. May I ask why bother with the to/from inputs? Why not just give us a single input to set the format we want? I hate to use the "go with the crowd" argument, but all other tagging software I have tried via windows or Kubuntu just offers a single input form. It' simple and, I hate to use this phrase, but "it just works." That said, thank you for the response, and keep up the good work!

Just some ideas why you could have had problems with your format:
  • Maybe you have activated "Format while editing" in the "Files" tab of the settings and a "String replacement" for "." to "".

  • You have to press the corresponding "From" button to actually format the filename. Then you can see the generated filename in the "Name" line edit, so you can see if the changes are OK before saving.

  • Quote:
Why not just give us a single input to set the format we want?

Before version 1.4, there was a single format, but on 2010-02-07 I received a user request by e-mail for separate formats. I implemented it because there is a reason for separate formats: The two operations are not completely inverse. Whereas the "To" operation uses the full path information (e.g. in "%{artist} - %{album}/%{track} %{title}" to get the artist and album from the directory name), the "From" operation only uses the filename (e.g. "%{track} %{title}"). To rename or create directories based on the tags, you have to use "Tools/Rename Directory". Before this separation, some users were confused because the directory part in the formats had no effect in the "From" operation.

Could you add the option to change the name that album artwork is saved as? I have my artwork saved as cover.jpg and at the moment everytime I save it out of kid3 I have to change the file name from folder to cover.

The change to libav-9.1 not only deprecated half of the API which is "normal" for libav, but also made the internals incompatible: First I had to fix a crash, then decoding was no longer working because the decoded data is now planar instead of packed and libavconvert cannot convert the planar data, so I switched to libavresample. Until a solution for your libav version is found, I recommend that you switch to GStreamer passing -DWITH_GSTREAMER=ON to cmake.

I guess that you are using ffpmeg-1.0.5, at least that's what seems to be available for openSUSE at the moment, and I can reproduce it with this version if I build it with --enable-avresample. Try the following patch:

German "Umlaute" get broken with ID3v2.4.0(TagLib)

    Kid3-Version: 2.3-30.1
    TagLib-Version: 1.8.3-2.1
    id3lib-Version: 3.8.3-256.1.2

    My Kid3 settings for Tag2:
    Text encoding: UTF8
Version used for new tags: ID3v2.4.0 (TagLib)

I got some problems with the German "Umlaute" in the tag fileds.
[Umlaute means e.g. "äÄöÖüÜß", for people not speaking German]

Until today I processed all my mp3-files with Kid3. Each time I opened a new mp3 file or an album-folder with Kid3, I first converted the tags to ID3v2.4 using the tools menu (Tools/Convert ID3v2.3 to ID3v2.4) before I finally edited all the tag. After saving the tags everything looked pretty good. But now I noted that many tag-fields of some mp3-files with "Umlaute" in it are corrupted.

So tagging mp3-files with ID3v2.4.0 (TagLib) results in broken "Umlaute". No matter what I do, all "Umlaute" get broken. But for a long time before it worked (last week I switched to from openSuse 12.2 to 12.3)

The only way to get correct "Umlaute" is:
    1. Switch settings to ID3v2.3.0 (id3lib)
    2. Execute Tools/Convert ID3v2.4 to ID3v2.3
    3. Edit the corrupted tag fileds and manually correct the "Umlaute"
After saving the changes all "Umlaute" are correct.

    Question:
What's the problem here? Is it a problem with ID3v2.4 (TagLib) library? Or maybe UTF-8?

Shouldn't I generally use ID3v2.4.0(TagLib) with Kid3 and sould better make use of ID3v2.3.0(id3lib)?

    Please tell me. Thx, Kai.

First we should check what is wrong with the file. Please take an existing MP3 file or just create an empty file using "touch umlaut.mp3", then in Kid3 set title to "äÄöÖüÜß" and artist to "Artist". On my system (Ubuntu 12.10) the tag looks like this:

From what I see, the tag seems to be OK. I could also see the umlauts when opening the file with iTunes on Mac OS X. On Linux, I could see the tag with VLC (uses TagLib) and mp3diags. Which program tells you that the tag is corrupt? Is your tag identical to mine?

I personally use ID3v1.1 and ID3v2.3.0. There are devices which do not support ID3v2.4.0, so IMHO ID3v2.3.0 is the better option.

I made a little screencast, uploaded to youtube. Please take a look.

    2)
In addition to my screencast I tried this:
I created 3 mp3 files in my screencast. When I load them with easytag, the title for all 3 files is fine. When I load the files into Amarok, only the id3lib-file is fine. The other 2 have a broken title.

So I still have problems with umlauts and don't know why. Only ID3v2.3 (id3lib) works for me.

Maybe a Kid3 problem? You have any ideas? :-)

I think openSUSE has a problem with TagLib. From what I see, you have problems with programs which use TagLib (Kid3, amaroK, probably also VLC). In your screencast, I can see that the encoding byte is always 0 (ISO-8859-1) not 1 for UTF-16 (IDv2.3.0) or 3 for UTF-8 (ID3v2.4.0). I can also see that you are able to create an ID3v2.3.0 tag with something like UTF-8, however, UTF-8 is not supported with ID3v2.3.0 (and I am not able to create something like this with Kid3). There exists a bug report for openSUSE for some time, maybe you have such a "patched" TagLib. Try to install a TagLib from openSUSE 12.1 or one of the fixed versions mentioned in the bug report:

"Auto Text Encoding" and "Auto Convert ID3v...."

Hi Urs, please let me give you two suggestions:

    1)
I configured Kid3 to use UTF-8 for text encoding. When I tag mp3-files, I allways execute the function "Apply Text Encoding" in Tools menu for all files in the filelist after loading them. So it would be phantastic, if Kid3 would automatically "Apply Text Encoding" after opening new files or a directory. Perhaps this could be realized by adding a new menu entry in settings menu(perhaps under "# Auto Hide Tags") with a checkbox (e.g. # Auto Apply Text Encoding). If it is checked, Kid3 automatically applies text encoding to all files in the file list after loading them. That would save a lot of extra clicks if all tags should have the same text encoding, like UTF-8 for example.

    2)
The same is for "Convert ID3v2.3 to ID3v2.4" and vice versa. I open a directory with some files. Each file could have a different ID3 version. At first I allways apply text encoding. Then I convert the tags to ID3v2.4. It would be great, when there would be a new menu-entry in the settings menu, where you can choose between "Auto Convert Tags to v2.3" and "Auto Convert Tags to v2.4" after loading new files.

I think it would be usefull and the user can configure it for his needs by enabling or diabling the auto funtions in the settings-menu.

Could you imagine to implement these two functions? I know, that you don't like it, that Kid3 would manipulate data without the intervention of the user. But Kid3 wouldn't change files on the HDD without saving changes by the user. So think of this as a suggestion from a long time Kid3 user. Thanks :-)
    Kai

First a suggestion for your workflow: I think that it would be better to first convert to ID3v2.4 and then apply the UTF-8 encoding. ID3v2.3 does not support UTF-8, so if you apply UTF-8, it will set UTF-16. When you first apply UTF-8 to your ID3v2.3 files and then convert them to ID3v2.4, you will end up with ID3v2.4 files having UTF-16 encoding.

You are right, I don't like Kid3 to manipulate data without the intervention of the user. What about the following workaround: You create a script (e.g. Python or bash) which calls the following D-Bus commands: selectAll, convertToId3v24, applyTextEncoding. You can then add this script as a user action and start it from the context menu of the file list.

    Hi Urs,
thanks for the information. Normally I do it that way: First convert the tags to ID3v2.4 and then apply text encoding. Sometimes I forget this.

I used qdbusviewer to find out the calls that fit my needs. I created a script and assigned it to a hotkey. That works perfect for me. So that's a good workaround. Please take a look:

    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /kid3/MainWindow_1 expandFileList
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 selectAll
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 convertToId3v24
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 applyTextEncoding
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 setTagFromOtherTag 1
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 save
    qdbus net.sourceforge.kid3 /Kid3 createPlaylist

I'm not familiar with dbus, so one question:
Related to dbus, is it ensured that all calls are not performed concurrently? I mean, will the calls in my script be performed in Fifo-Order, even if there is a call, which need more time to be finished than other calls?

Sorry for the late answer, I was on holiday last month. Your shell script looks good, the shell will execute the lines in your script sequentially (asynchronous execution would need a '&' after the command).
