Device Manager

Plasmoid Binary

Minimum required   KDE 4.x
Downloads:  6308
Submitted:  Jun 1 2009

Description:

This applet is discontinued!! Since I'm now working directly on the KDE's Device Notifier I won't add any new feature to this one. I'll fix serious bugs, though.

This is an applet that lets you mount, umount, open your devices.
It has a capacity bar to show the free space, and avoids the ugly window that pops up when you open a device with more than one action in the standard Device Notifier.
It can show all the devices instead of the removable ones only and can do the automount.

I hope you like it!

WARNING! With KDE previous than 4.3 and dark plasma themes you won't be able to read the labels cause the font is dark too.

Changelog:

1.1.1
-shows errors on mounting if any and after the mount the icon changes
-fixed the bug of some .dektop files not readed
-fixed a bug with the show/hide system

1.1
-when a mount is done the icon changes like when you eject something
-the capacity bar grows with the widget
-various code liftings

1.0.2
-added option utf8 when mounting fat volumes

1.0.1
-fixed a regression that caused plasma to freeze

1.0
-added a capacity bar
-added the possibility to lay out the actions in a row instead of in column
-fixed a crash with automount and audio or blanck cd
-maybe other things that I don't remember :p. Find them out by yourself!

0.4
-now the devices can be hidden as you can do in dolphin
-added a button to simply mount the devices as you can umount them

0.3
-added an option to hide the not removable devices
-an option to change the icon instead of show the popup on the insertion of a new device
-a bugfix

0.2
-added a margin in the left of the actions to distinguish them from the devices
-added an option for the automount
-added an option that makes the dialog hide after some time after the insertion of a removable device
-fixed a bug with the scroll
-better code

0.1
initial version

 Font and transparency problems

Device manager looks interesting, but it doesn't work well with my plasma theme (Glassified). I have a dark wallpaper and I cannot see device names, 'cause they are painted with black font.

Hi,

There has been a couple of comments about this (I have the same problem). Apparently it will be resolved after upgrading to KDE 4.3.

 Crash when inserting Audio-CD

by tittiatcoke on: Jul 23 2009

Hi,

It seems that the device manager is causing a crash of plasma as soon as you insert an Audio-CD.

I haven't tried it yet with a Data-CD. This has been tested on KDE4.3RC3 and KDE4.4snapshot

Regards

Raymond

 1.0 results in plasma freeze

After updating device manager to 1.0 version, plasma-desktop freezes. I've tried removing device manager from panel and adding it desktop, still i get the freeze. The only option is to remove device manager from plasma activity or downgrade it to 0.4 version.

very strange! what version of KDE do you have?
the freeze happens immediately after you add the plasmoid?

either also set the background color or don't set foreground(font) color

It's pretty much standard practice and you should always follow the rule above

I don't set the background and the foreground colour directly, but it's all managed by the Plasma::Delegate, so I'd have to reimplement some parts of it.
But since 4.3 is going to be released soon I don't think it is so important.

 Freezing / High CPU load

by srog on: Jul 31 2009

Here with the 1.0.1

With the KDE 4.2.4 the device manager is working without problems.

With the Kubuntu Karmic / KDE 4.3 RC3

When adding the Device Manager 1.0.1 the plasma desktop will freeze.

When starting with the command:
"plasmoidviewer manager"

The Devicemanager is starting but there are lot of errors:

ERROR: syntax error
Unrecognized character: /
Unrecognized character: /
ERROR: syntax error
Unrecognized character: /
Unrecognized character: /

and the CPU load is about 30 %

I've had the same problem, but with 1.0 version. With 1.0.1 it is fixed (I use KDE 4.3 RC3). Make sure you do not have any leftovers from the previous version.

hmm.. i'm builing it on (k)ubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.3rc3.. removed old one.. restart.. compiled and still there's the problem with freezing (or extreme slowliness because devicemanager loads after while)

@srog Sam i just want to thank you for your great effort with plasmoids ;) your repo is the best..

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
