Description:

This applet is discontinued!! Since I'm now working directly on the KDE's Device Notifier I won't add any new feature to this one. I'll fix serious bugs, though.

This is an applet that lets you mount, umount, open your devices.
It has a capacity bar to show the free space, and avoids the ugly window that pops up when you open a device with more than one action in the standard Device Notifier.
It can show all the devices instead of the removable ones only and can do the automount.

I hope you like it!

WARNING! With KDE previous than 4.3 and dark plasma themes you won't be able to read the labels cause the font is dark too.

Changelog:

1.1.1
-shows errors on mounting if any and after the mount the icon changes
-fixed the bug of some .dektop files not readed
-fixed a bug with the show/hide system

1.1
-when a mount is done the icon changes like when you eject something
-the capacity bar grows with the widget
-various code liftings

1.0.2
-added option utf8 when mounting fat volumes

1.0.1
-fixed a regression that caused plasma to freeze

1.0
-added a capacity bar
-added the possibility to lay out the actions in a row instead of in column
-fixed a crash with automount and audio or blanck cd
-maybe other things that I don't remember :p. Find them out by yourself!

0.4
-now the devices can be hidden as you can do in dolphin
-added a button to simply mount the devices as you can umount them

0.3
-added an option to hide the not removable devices
-an option to change the icon instead of show the popup on the insertion of a new device
-a bugfix

0.2
-added a margin in the left of the actions to distinguish them from the devices
-added an option for the automount
-added an option that makes the dialog hide after some time after the insertion of a removable device
-fixed a bug with the scroll
-better code

0.1

Hi,

Still can't get this to work in Fedora 11.
I always have to go back to version 0.4.
I can't see hard disk partions using versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 in Fedora 11 with KDE 2.2.4 and 4.3. Any other Fedora users having problems OR is there some way I can debug the problem.

Thanks,

GZU

i don't know what it could be, maybe a packaging problem, or maybe some old settings in your ~/.kde directory.

these messages are not related to your problem.
You should instead see messages like this:
DeviceManager::dataUpdated: DeviceManager::solidDeviceEngine updated "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_9A56837456835045"
Do you see them? they should be one per device.

I don't think kDebug is working properly in Fedora 11. I have re-compiled using fulldebug. I can only see mostly qt debug messages and some kinit4 messages. I can see your kDeug code in devicemanager.cpp.

I'll have to find out what is wrong with kDebug in Fedora, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks for your suggestions.

maybe it's simply a matter of settings.
open kdebugdialog and see if the fields are checked.

Hi,

See debugging for version 0.4 below. However when I install version 1.0.2 I get no debugging output for DeviceManager. Was there additional dependencies required for 1.0.2 in comparison to 0.4 which I may not have installed.

Thanks,

 Device actions

Hi and thanks for that very nice plasmoid!

I have, however, a little problem: Some of the device actions (predefined, I didn't change anything) don't show up in the pop-up properly. There is just a ?-symbol and no text - nevertheless the actions do work (you just don't know what you're clicking on).

What works:
-open with Dolphin
-download photos with Digikam

What doesn't show up:
-rip CD with Audex
-rip CD with K3B
-play CD with Kaffeine

(Others not tested)

The actions are shown properly in the standard device manager's pop-up.

Weird, I can't see your response to my comment, although I reloaded the page...

Anyhow, the name fields seem to be fine, I can give you an example file:

[Desktop Entry]
X-SuSE-translate=true
X-KDE-Solid-Predicate=[ StorageVolume.ignored == false AND OpticalDisc.availableContent == 'Audio' ]
Type=Service
Actions=ripaudiocd;

[Desktop Action ripaudiocd]
Exec=audex
Icon=audex
Name=Extract Digital Audio with Audex
Name[de]=Digital-Audio mit Audex auslesen

#/usr/share/kde4/apps/solid/actions/audex-rip-audiocd.desktop

Is everything OK with the path?

This is with the Kubuntu 9.04 & Kubuntu 9.10 (alpha-4).

The device manager is version 1.1.

The device manager is working fine but it is showing some of the actions as ?-marks:

http://yfrog.com/e7playej

Workaround/ example: The Kaffeine is using (kaffeine_play_dvd.desktop):
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
Actions=PlayDVD;
X-KDE-Solid-Predicate=OpticalDisc.availableContent & 'VideoDvd'

[Desktop Action PlayDVD]
Name=Play DVD with Kaffeine
Exec=kaffeine --dvd %f
Icon=kaffeine
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_kaffeine

It seems that the device manager doesn't understand this - if i change the "PlayDVD" to the "open" then the device manager is showing the device actions fine:

http://yfrog.com/64openxj

This is a small beauty spot - Thank you of fine application !

 compilation instructions

 by YAFU on: Aug 17 2009

Score 50%

Please add compilation instructions in source file for newbies like me.
I do (for kubuntu with kde 4.3):
Install all packages needed to compile, kde-devel,cmake, make and maybe others.

Extract the tar.bz2 archive in your home. Open konsole and:

cd devicemanager
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ..
make
sudo make install
kbuildsycoca4

"sudo make install" can be replace for "sudo checkinstall" if you know how to use it.

Thanks for this great plasmoid!
Bye.

 Encrypted

This widget seems to lock up plasma whenever an encrypted external drive is connected. It may do the same for internal drives, I have not tried.

Correction: it only seems to be a problem when you login with encrypted volumes connected, it is fine if you plug them in after you login. It also is only a problem prior to decrypting them, if you decrypt them (such as with dolphin) plasma immediately starts running normally again.

do you use automount?
I don't know how the encrypted wolumes work, but maybe the plasmoid is trying to mount it and it can't?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
