Description:

What is it
Colibri provides an alternative to KDE4 Plasma notifications.

Colibri notifications look lighter and are completely passive: they do not provide any buttons. You may or may not like this.

Since they are completely passive, they smoothly fade away when you mouse over them, allowing you to interact with any window behind them.

They also do not stack each others: if multiple notifications happen, they will be shown one at a time.

Dependencies
You need kdelibs >= 4.4.

It will build with 4.3, but notifications from KDE applications will not go through Colibri because kdelibs 4.3 does not use FreeDesktop notifications (unless you are using Kubuntu Karmic, which backported the FreeDesktop notifications support).

A bit of history

Passive notifications for Plasma first appeared as "Ayatana notifications", an alternative notification system I implemented in Kubuntu Karmic as part of my work for Canonical.

Ayatana notifications were implemented as a patch against the systemtray applet. Colibri is based on this work, but does not require patching any applet.

Colibri contains code I wrote for Canonical, but it is not a Canonical product.

Changelog:

2010.02.16 - 0.1.1
- Moved the KCM to the Desktop category.
- Emit the NotificationClosed() signal when a notification is closed. This fixes double notifications from Banshee.
- Implement the CloseNotification() method.

2009.12.15 - 0.1.0
- First release.

 by stribianese91 on: Mar 21 2010

This is a good work, but can you add the transfert notifications, i.e. when you copy a file? :)

Unfortunately this is not possible: file transfers are handled in a totally different way than notifications, they just *look* similar when rendered by Plasma.

 Overriding other package

by jeanfrancisroy on: Apr 24 2010

Hi! I'd like to try out Colibri and I did a Gentoo package for it. But unfortunately, it tries to override /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service which belongs to x11-misc/notification-daemon package.

Is there a way to avoid this file collision? I mean, if one wants to remove Colibri, he will have to reinstall notification-daemon after... Thanks!

does it work on kubuntu lucid?

by bigbrovar on: Apr 24 2010

I noticed this package now comes with lucid (repo) I installed it but i have not been able to enable it. I tried choosing a position from systemsettings and rebooted like twice still the default notification is what comes up. any thought on this

Yes, it works. You have to go into System Notifications and disable application notifications. Then enter 'notify-send Hello' in a terminal to test that it works.

Unfortunately, the one thing I find myself needing to do is type that command every time I start my computer :-/ Anyone know how to fix that issue?

You just put /usr/bin/colibri into the autostart.

Hm. It may be that I'm blind, but I can't find the entry "application notifications" in system settings -> notifications. I use kubuntu - kde 4.4.3. Any ideas where I could find it?

 strange grafical effect

by Morgenstern on: Jun 10 2010

I installed colibri on my Kubuntu LL from repositories; it works but that's what i get

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/831/cornerscreen.png

Why is it so yellow???? And... it's not passive: i can close it (that's good for me, but it's strange for colibri)...

I used to use it on KK and it worked very well...

What you are seeing is not Colibri: it is Notification-daemon, the default GNOME notification display. You should be able to fix this by uninstalling notification-daemon.

Unfortunately there is no way right now for a DBus service like Colibri or Notification-daemon to specify it should only run on KDE or GNOME.

 Sizing options?

by therealpxc on: Jun 12 2010

This notification system is pretty nice, but I would really like the ability to modify the width of the notifications. On my system, I have the notifications set to appear centered on the top section of my screen. There's plenty of horizontal space available, but for longer notifications, the text wraps down in lines in a way that I find frustrating.

Anyone know how to get it working in KDE 4.5?

(I need to disable the default KDE notification part, but I can't figure out how)

Found it.
Right click on the "i" in the circle. Notification Settings
Uncheck Application notifications
