Submitted:  Dec 23 2009
Updated:  Mar 4 2012

Description:

A simple clock, implemented as KWin Effect

- This is NO plasmoid!
- You need active desktop FX to use this clock

** NOTICE **
For KDE 4.10 you'll have to obtain the version from https://sourceforge.net/p/bekwinfx/
(either through preferably git or a live tarball)

0.18 will not work on KDE 4.10

Installation:
---
tar -xJf beclock-kwin-fx.x.y.txz
cd beclock-kwin-fx
./configure
cd build
make && sudo make install
---
to activate or configure
- rightclick some titlebar
- say "configure..."
- click "all effects"
- filter for beclock
- check and maybe configure it.
- click apply

Advances:
- always on top
- input event dead (you can click through etc.)

Features:
- AM/PM or 24h digital display
- optional date display
- binary clock

Changelog:

0.18
----
- hometime support, ie you get one additional timezone to select which will appear as a dot in the analog rings only

0.17a
----
- yet another maintenance release, fixes 64bit (thanks to Raymond Wooninck for notice and a patch) and KDE 4.7 building
- hometime support comes later ...

0.17
----
- build fix
- show corner activated clock on countdown
- preselect local time format (24h ./. AM/PM)

0.16
----
- maintainance release for KDE SC 4.8rc1 compilation. No functional change.
- update on 2012-02-03: cmake janus compilation issues, no code change

0.15
----
- support for 4.8 (yes, doesn't disappear anymore)
- alpha support for GLSL 2.0 (the blendfunction was irrelevant since not used anyway - i fixed kwin to support 2.0 shaders on my box ;-)
- as an extra bonus a binary and a Maya inspired clock =)

Can't be activated under KDE 4.9

by bitcrazy on: Jul 28 2012

Score 50%

Hello Thomas,
beclock doesn't work anymore under KDE 4.9 RC1.
openSuSE 12.1
"An effect can't be activated" in systemsettings
Compilation works, btw.

Regards
Dieter

I even run it with kwin git master here - did you recompile it?
(the effect ABI changed)

"compilation works, btw" ... so that's not it?

a) sure it's beclock that cannot be activated and not sth. else and beclock just does not show up?

b) Does it work with the xrender backend?

c) the "could not be activated" should provide more information (like wrong ABI, does not support this backend, ... stuff)

Forget it. New start of KDE solved the issue.

 KDE 4.10 with GHNS Support

Hi, I discovered your nice clock a few weeks ago. Very useful to me! :)
As I heard kde sc 4.10 kwin effects got GHNS support. Could you look into this and add your stuff there? (especially since this version isn't working anymore for 4.10)
thanks!

GHNS does not work for effects which need to be written in cpp.

 kwin effect idea

by prowlerxpla on: Mar 16 2013

I have 4 users on my laptop, me, eros, nipoti, rosy; when I access to it I never know at glance wich user is active; it would be beautiful to have a kwin effect like the superbe beclock to show the username permanently on the screen...:-) I hope you consider enough exciting the idea to write a new kwin effect...:-) thanks, ciao, pier

Why would you want that in a kwin effect?
Eg. the current login (or name) in the session menu in the panel (no, i don't know whether there's a similar plasmoid) what does also work w/o compositing.

The login is not like the time, you could just run "whoami" in konsole once and be sufficiently informed for the rest of the session (while you will look at the clock every now and then, so you need much simpler access)

becouse when "me" use the laptop then "nipoti" use the laptop, then leave it, then I come back and use the laptop again, I don't know at glance which is the current user, if a kwineffect show me the username I can switch user, kwin effect is indipendent from desktop and cannot be eliminated with one click...:-) :-) :-) :-)

That's why eg. my session popup button button contains my login.

For plasma, see eg.
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/fast+user+switch?content=127462

If you had it as a kwin effect it would be always above something - for the one moment you return to your box.

thank you for the fastuserswitch plasmoid, I tried it and every user of the laptops found it useful, the why I would like a kwin effect is just becouse it will be always above something.
Certainly you know how can one single mouse click be a hard work :-), so, as the fastuserswitch plasmoid spare one click, the kwin effect with username above everything I hope will do.
I have four laptops each of one configured with four users.... for now..:-), me, my nephews, my son, my sister, and everyone use casually one of the laptops with theyr user, me is the only one with a little computer skill, so I told everybody to use theyr user, but, the annoyng thing is that if I go to an open laptop with firefox open I don't know AT GLANCE which user is active, so I have to go to desktop see the user (with the help of community I made a plasmoid for this...:-)
https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/484422-set-font-dimension-plasmoid-using-python-qml.html
https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/484291-how-have-username-permanently-screen.html)
and use that user or change it, so, this single HARDWORK click can be spared if I can see which user is active AT GLANCE, above everything, big...., with some trasparency...., so I hope my nephews will effectively use linux user feature, and also ctrl>alt>F7 F8 F9 to change user...:-)
thank you for the time you dedicated me, good easter, ciao, Pier

in case please send me the output of "qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin supportInformation" - otherwise just use the current git version (there've been major KWin/GL changes between 4.9 & 4.10)

After restart all works.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
