 Kdropbox doesn't connect

by alvanx on: Apr 20 2010

Score 50%

It looks promising, but I can't get it to connect. Any help or tips there? The default dropbox client connects without problems. Also, Dropbox loads at startup, but that includes the default client, which I would like to avoid. How can I start dropbox without getting the tray icon?
Thanks! :-)

Hi!

May be you have to configure the path to dropbox.py in Kdropbox preferences window.

Unfortunately it's not posible to launch the daemon without the GUI. There are some tricks to avoid this situation.

For both issues the following link could be useful for you:

Let me know if you still have any problem

Thank you for your help. For some reason my dropbox.py had been within my Dropbox folder (I don't remember what I did when I first installed it). I reinstalled it again according to your instructions and was confused because I thought that the location should be /bin/dropbox.py, to where I installed it. Later I saw (from the last screenshot) that you actually installed it into /home/[user]/bin. Does this make a difference?

I get this output when starting it from a cli:
"$ dropbox.py start
Starting Dropbox...Exception in thread RTRACE:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "threading.py", line 486, in __bootstrap_inner
File "core/high_trace.py", line 434, in run

File "common_util/osutils.py", line 34, in makedirs
OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/alvanx/.dropbox/cache'

Done!"

And it still doesn't seem to connect after setting up kdropbox right. Is the problem with the folder I put dropbox.py in? Or is it something else?

Again thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

Hi again, it seems a problem with your dropbox installation.

May be you installed (unpacked) dropbox as a root. This would explain why dropbox.py isn't able to mkdir cache directory

Try this:

$ cd /home/alvanx/.dropbox/
$ ls -la

Is alvanx the owner of all files and directories?

Regards

Yes it was installed as root (and the command you gave me proved it). I reinstalled it properly and now it works. Thank you very much! :-)

Thank you so much for this.

I was wondering if you plan on developing Dolphin/Konqueror integration similar to that for Nautilus.

If so, have you been in contact with kinus, who has already started down this track? His KDE service menu is at: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=115336&forumpage=0

It seems like your two projects might be a good fit.

Yes, I know Kinus project and I'm user of his service-menu application. I agree both projects fit perfectly but I'm not in contact with him.

Currently I'm focused on these features:

-Start/stop Dropbox
-Recently changed files
-Opening Dropbox folder when double click on tray icon

I'm considering to include some kind of integration throughout a service menu and contact kinus could be a good thing.

Thanks for your comment. Regards!

 options greyed out

Dropbox doesn't connect automatically, I have to click on it each time I log in to start the daemon. Also the options to start/stop automatically and other options in preferences > general are all greyed out.

Hi, some options are grayed out in preferences because they aren't developed yet.

But there isn't any logic to gray out any option in the sys tray menu.

Finally may be you have a some problems with the daemon.

Sorry! I'm not accepting translations currently, may be soon...

I'm working on some internal changes for the next release:
- Custom Dropbox client. This means it won't be necessary to use dropbox.py python script.
- Installation process: Kdropbox will download the official daemon, extract the files and launch the gtk wizard for setting up the account.

Thanks in advance for the translation!

I'm just curious, what are the differences between this Dropbox interface and the original?

I already have Dropbox sitting in tray doing it's job well and the only thing a miss a bit from GNOME desktop is the items flags that shows update/updating/broken and so on, thanks.

Hi, currently I'm trying to clone the official one, so the differences are minimal. The only advantage is not having to use gnome libraries.

And that's a great advantage for itself.

So basically if I install Kdropbox it will be the same than running original tray icon with the plus of having it in spanish? Sounds cool to me :)

That's it but you might miss some features like % of usage of your account and regarding Spanish:

Si tu configuración de idioma es es_ES no tendrás problema. Puedes comprobarlo haciendo echo $LANG

En caso de ser otra te aconsejo que renombres /usr/share/qt4/translations/kdropbox_es_ES.qm con las siglas adecuadas

Ok, the language issue is something trivial to fix but the usage meter is a must have for me :S

I will wait until you add it, thanks for your answers, great job!!

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
