Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.6
  • Tweak the dialogs to make them a bit more compact

  • Make the traffic plotter widgets behave more like those in the KDE System Monitor

  • Fix a few minor bugs that gave us wrong values in the traffic plotter range

  • LicenseGPL

    Hello!

I think KNemo is a really good tool.

I would like to know how kNemo obtains download and upload speed.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Oh well, it is simple, really simple and maybe too simple to be of any use (I mean the value, not my explanation):

KNemo runs 'ifconfig' every second and looks at the value of 'RX bytes' (and TX Bytes) and calculates the difference between 2 runs. E.g. now it says 5000 bytes, 1 second later it's 6000 bytes which gives 1000 bytes/s. I have seen other programs are using a history so that the calculated speed doesn't alter too much from second to second.

You can get tx/rx bytes from "/sys/class/net/<device>/statistics/[rt]x_bytes" in linux without any external program.

Changing KNemo to use a plugin architecture for different backends that provide the needed information is one of the bigger changes that are on my TODO list. But not in the near future... Then there could be backends for /sys or /proc and maybe backends to other tools that provide these information.

Oh, no wonder knemo always eats 2-4% CPU on my machine. We would really appreciate it if this can be fixed in the next release. Running ifconfig every second is not very good.

Go to the KDE control center, there to 'Network' and you should find the configuration for KNemo (the entry should read 'KDE Network Monitor'). Make sure there is at least one interface in the list on the left side. Also make sure that the option 'Hide icon when not connected' on the right is NOT active. Applying these settings should make at least one icon available in your system tray.

If not, please make sure KNemo is running by checking again in the Service Manager of KDE.

    Hi there,

Love your program ! I use it as a standard part of my KDE-desktop every day :)

Suggestion: Could you maybe integrate the trafficplotter into the "traffic"-tab instead of having it as a seperate menu item ?

     knemo bug

seems that knemo reads the interface names from the textual output of ifconfig which doesn't work very well if you rename the ifnames to have consistent names based on mac-addresses and not based on when it's detected (eth0 the first eth1 the second and so on)

I rename my usb ethernet adapter from whatever it's called to usbethernet0, but the name get's cut off by ifconfig, and usbethernet0 doesn't work in knemo, but the cut of name usbethern works... but as you can see ifconfig doesn't recognize usbehtern

both gentoo and suse uses this:

    lapwakko ~ # ifconfig usbethernet0
    usbethern Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:60:0A:4A:FB
    inet addr:192.168.1.194 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

    TX packets:45 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:1866 (1.8 Kb) TX bytes:5839 (5.7 Kb)

    lapwakko ~ # ifconfig usbethern

Have you tried 'usbethern' as name in KNemo? KNemo doesn't run ifconfig for every single interface it has to monitor but instead uses ifconfig without parameter and parses the output. So 'usbethern' should work... I guess.

yes, I said so earlier, that usbethern works.. I just though it was a bug. Should be better integrated somehow, so it knows whats available.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
     Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
