 unstable

by crissi on: Jul 21 2004

Score 50%

I test skype and its a useful application but its unstable.
It crashes at several times on register, login, closing, etc but i dont know the reason.
Sometimes there are still problems with register.
At some machines only work the static version.
Sometimes it freeze (why?).
Searching for user dont works any time, manual adding helps sometimes, but othertimes not.

I also miss translations, a option to say that a official ip is used but firewalled (no access to firewall) and the possibility of conferences.

If the bugs are fixed and missing features will be added its one of the easiest VoP tools.

For me its fine, I even purchased a 10 call pack. The problem is that I upgraded my system to an amd64 and in my debian 64 I can only run it binding other 32 system libraries (chroot, etc). That really sucks. :(. I offer myself for compiling it under Debian-64 but i think they wont accept :(.
At least they said they would think about developing a 64 bit version.
Hope it arrives soon ;).
btw it sounds really awesome

 Skype for Opie/GPE?

by nsicad on: Sep 22 2004

Score 50%

Probably Skype should include versions that run in Embedded Linux Platform e.g. Opie and GPE for Sharp and Ipaq. I know skype has version for PPC already.

Skype is awesome! I use it frequently in conference calls with 4-6 people and it copes admirably with excellent quality. I also think the interface is well constructed and pleasant to use.

More KDE-ness would be all I could ask for really.. Thanks!

 Contacts Lists

by thormedia on: Jan 29 2005

Score 50%

Why oh why have Skype not stored a users contacts list on their servers. I move around various OS's at various sites, and Skype is superb, but the BIG negative is not having my contacts readily available when I log in.

Even just the ability to import/export them would be better.

I suppose some could say I could have an account for each location, but when people want to contact me it becomes a mess.

Anyone got any views on this?

Kind regards

Miles

There are NO skype servers. The current user directory is completely decentralized a la Gnutella.

They only manage a sign in server. That's it.

My only missing feature is the spyware from Gater. The same guys ship it with stable Kazaa, I hope Skype will also have it when it turns stable. But the unticipation is killing me. Wink wink.

 Skype Works!!!

by maarizwan on: Apr 23 2005

Score 50%

I installed skype on Linux and dialed my friend on Windows 2000 professional. It works, the Voice is like Telephone.

The only thing which bothers me is...

If skype userbase gets big enough then skype can suddenly change their License and force the HUGE userbase to pay for their service, pc-to-pc too!!! A typical corporate strategy.

Anyways what makes Skype non popular (a failure):

1. Chat ROOMs (a yahoo chat room integration would be great, so that existing yahoo users can use skype for yahoo and skype dialing)

2. Animated smilies: Like Yahoo, animated smilies must be there, and there are many smilies like =)) (rolling on floor), etc are not present.

3. Interface improvement: whenever I have to start a chat or do a voice call i have to RIGHT Click on the window. A Right/Left Pane which shows "Chat" "Dial", etc. would make the task easier.

Anyways, thanks for skype.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
