 Not so good

by vorner on: Sep 23 2005

Well, it is not so good. There are lot of problems.

One of them is absence of ALSA support. And with artsdsp, it works very poorly. So if you want to call, you can not hear any other sounds.

Another is, that sometimes two users can not find each other.

Another, if you have public IP address, you are used to route data for others. What if you pay wor data you download/upload?

And about the encryption - well, they say it is encrypted, but they said as well, that they are able to decrypt it if they have a police order and listen to you.

And there is that stupid licence, that says that you are agreeing on this licence and all future version they may release. That means, you read the licence, click 'yes', they change the licence, write it in some really small letters on their web page and you are bound by that new licence. Odd, isn't it?

IANAL but a contract that says you also agree to any revisions isn't enforcable (you can't agree to a contract you've never seen). I would assume that it is the same with a license.

Well, I'm not a layer and I can not say you are right or wrong here. But I would guess you are.

However, that means they can not tell you, you will now pay a million for every minute youb talk. But I think it allows them to take your rights. (Well, there are not many you have by the EULA). Thay will argument by that, if you do not agree you have no rights.

Therefore any rights you have are unenforceable by this part.

That's why I'm thinking about making some call-capable protocol myself, a open-source one that would allow companies to provide call to ordinary phones. But I'm not sure what I can do..

Check this out:
http://www.skype.com/help/guides/soundsetup_linux.html

So the arts problem is solved by running skype through artsdsp.

Ups, yes, they _say_ you solve it by artsdsp.

However, today version of skype has some problems with artsdsp. You start call, and you can simply speak. However, after a while, there appears a delay from mic to what is going out. And that delay grows by time. After 5 minute talk, you end up by saying something and the other end hears it after a minute, so he is anwsering you one question back. First time I encoured this, I was quite confused by that..

And if you say, use older version, it is impossible as well, it is no longer allowed to connect.

The problems is your sound card/onboard sound doesn't support Hardware Mixing. You need something like a nForce 1/2/3 onboard or at least a Soundblaster Live in ya box. If you have nForce, use the nvidia sound drivers. nForce 4 doesn't have hardware mixing from my seaches on the internet.

Hi,

I hope in the near future a combination of jabber and google talks voice plugin will be the best replacement. However it takes some time for google to become more open and for developpers to include it into their chat programs.

I think currently the best option is gnomemeeting (does anyone know a kde equalivant for gnomemeeting?) It uses the same protocol windows netmeeting (defailt in xp) uses. (which is an open protocol)

Also kopete will support skype in the near fututre but I think this isn't what you mean because you probably mean you want to communicate via an open protocol?

Cheers,
David

I know about that plugin for Kopete. Who do you think wrote it :D. Me.

But it still uses running Skype.

And by the way, the sound problems, you can NOT solve them by artsdsp, it does not work well.

Thanks you very much for your comment.

I finally enjoy using Linphone. And for that, I defined user protocols in Guarddog:
SIP: 5060-5061 TCP
RTP: 8000-8004 UDP
STUN: 3478 TCP & UDP
I am using public stun server as indicated here: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-STUN

I had only to change the way linphone is called by the menu in KDE: ksystraycmd linphone

It works great.

I've also tried X-lite which has nice features. Unfortunally it's not free software but uses SIP protocol too. http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Communications/Internet-Phone/X-Lite-5595.shtml

 Nice try

The Linux version is unfortunately buggy as hell. If there is an incoming chat "1 new event" is listed in the event pane and the icon in the systray keeps flashing. I have found NO way whatsoever to get rid of this message without restarting Skype. The startup time is extremely annoying. This takes > 30 seconds on a 3 Ghz processor.

Some say Linux users dont accept commercial apps. IMO this is not the case at all. I would absolutely love to use Skype. But if the Linux version is lacking that far behind the Windows version, it's no wonder Linux folks keep looking for an Open Source alternative.

 My experience

by haseebmahmud on: Jul 4 2006

My experience with 1,2 is not so good. It has a poor sound quality and once I have a talk with someone all other sound goes off. I have to re-login to the system to hear anything again. I hoped in the next version it will be fixed. But I didnt find any indication of that from the bugfix list.

Anyway, I found the following error message while trying to install 1,3 beta.

#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2006-07-04 20:16:13 ####

perl-XML-SAX 0.12-5 conflict
Broken Dependencies of Installed:
perl-XML-SAX requires perl-XML-NamespaceSupport
Conflict Resolution:
( ) Downgrade perl-XML-SAX-0.12-5.1 to Version 0.12-5
( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies

#### YaST2 conflicts list END ###

Any suggestion?

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
