Description:

Cantata is a (yet another!) client for the music player daemon (MPD). Originally started as a fork of QtMPC, the code is now *very* different. Cantata can be compiled with KDE support, or as a pure Qt4 application. The interface is very configurable - most views can be shown as either a list or tree structure.

Currently Cantata has the following views:

1. Library - sorted as Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist not set), Album, and finally Track.
2. Albums - displays albums as icons, sorted by their title.
3. Folders - displays MPDs virtual filesystem. (This view is hidden by default)
4. Playlists
5. Dynamic - dynamic playlists
6. Streams - allows saving of internet radio URLs, searching for stations via TuneIn or ShoutCast, station listings from; Digitally Imported (+Sky, JazzRadio, RockRadio), TuneIn, IceCast, ShoutCast, SomaFM, etc.
7. Online - Jamendo, Magnatune, SoundCloud, and Podcasts
8. Devices - enables copying from/to USB-Mass-Storage (UMS) and MTP devices, and ripping AudioCDs

The sidebar has a context menu, allowing you to control its style and what items are shown.

Refer to http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Client:Cantata, and https://cantata.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/README, for further information.

Changelog:

1.5.1
-----
1. Show correct separators for windows builds.
2. Supply TagLib 1.9.1 for windows builds.
3. Convert filename to UTF16 before passing to TagLib for windows builds.
4. When emiting signal to say cover is loaded, need to adjust size by pixel ratio.
5. Fix updating of toolbar coverwidget if cover is downloaded after song has started.
6. Fix compilation when online services disabled.
7. Fix dynamic playlists with no include rules.
8. Re-add option to show artist images in tree and list views.

1.5.0.1
-------
1. Add missing libtag.dll to windows setup.

1.5.0
-----
1. Remove cover size setting, set automatically.
2. Artist images only shown in grid view.
3. No images, or icons, shown in basic tree view.
4. Remove GUI option to control saving of scaled covers. This is enabled by default, and can be toggled via the config file.
5. Don't re-load view when sort changes.
6. Simplify view config pages.
7. Use QUrl with server details to build HTTP address used to compare MPD http file paths against.
8. Store song ratings in MPD's sticker DB. Ratings stored using 'rating' key and values 0 to 10. In the UI, ratings are show as 5 stars.
9. If we fail to download a cover, don't keep trying next time song is played.
10. Simplify toolbar cover widget, no border.
11. Allow preference dialog to shrink smaller. If screen size is less than 800px, then views page is re-arranged to allow much smaller dialog, category selector uses smaller icons, and headers are removed.. You can check this setting by calling cantata as follows: CANTATA_NETBOOK=1 cantata
12. Support MPDs "find modified-since" with MPD 0.19 and newer. If a number is entered it is taken to be 'modified since X days in past', otherwise a date should be entered (e.g. 01/12/2001 to find all tracks since 1st Dec 2001) Cantata will first try to convert from your locale date format, default date format, and then ISO date format.
13. Show covers in search results.
14. Show performer in cover tooltip if this is set and different to album artist.
15. Always large action icons for grid view.
16. Increase gap between add and play icons in grid view.
17. Disable volume fade on stop by default - this is really something MPD itself should implement.
18. Remove 'Add albums in random order' from view context menus.
19. Reorganize playqueue context menu.
20. Use 'Metadata' and not 'Tags' as metadata/tags view in context song pane.
21. Minor changes to song progress slider.
22. Show covers in playlist tree and list views.
23. Use read-only editable combo for filename in tag editor, so that text can be selected.
24. Also read /com/canonical/desktop/interface/scrollbar-mode to determine if overlay scrollbars have been disabled.
25. Add note about 'AlbumArtist' tag to initial settings wizard.
26. Use QDesktopWidget::logicalDpiX()/96.0 to set DPI scale factor.
27. Expand ~/ to QDir::homePath() when read from UI.
28. Save QDir::homePath()/ as ~ in config file, and convert when read.
29. Allow all bar title and artist columns to be hidden in playqueue.
30. Add option to disable song info tooltips.
31. Only show icons in message widget buttons if style uses icons for dialog buttons.
32. Add option to have separate play queue search action - enabled by default.
33. Revert back to storing scaled covers as JPG. PNG is taking too much space, especially with retina displays.
34. Read ArtistSort, AlbumArtistSort, and AlbumSort from MPD. If found, use these to sort items.
35. Add 'Full Refresh' action - cuases caches to be removed, and models to be completely refreshed.
36. Add actions to mark podcast as episode as listened or new.
37. Add action to cancel podcast downloads.
38. Download podcasts sequentially.
39. Configurable limit to auto podcast downloading.
40. When starting, remove any previous partial podcast downloads.
41. Don't make media keys backend configurable, auto detect the best one.
42. Remove Gtk combo popup size hack.
43. Fix Qt5 translations.
44. Add button to status bar to eanble/disable playback of MPD HTTP output stream.
45. Show notification when outputs changed.
46. Connect MPRIS stopAfterCurrent signal to correct action.
47. Add prev/play/pause/etc actions to Unity launcher, and to windows taskbar entry.
48. Fix current track highlight in grouped view under windows for header item.
49. Use same selection drawing for all views.
50. Fix size of collapsed window in windows builds.
51. If run under Unity or OSX, then place close buttons on left.
52. Fix auto-marking of played downloaded podcasts when connected via a local socket.
53. Fix playback of local files by inbuilt HTTP server.
54. In catata-tags.exe set unhandled exception handler, to prevent windows crash dialog appearing.
55. If a command fails to be sent to MPD, and the socket is in an error state, then reconnect and update status and playqueue.
56. For windows builds, when window is not focused, draw sidebar selection as a darkened background.
57. If MPD supports https, then there is no need to convert SoundCould URLs.
58. If playlist is loaded and replaces playqueue, then start playback of first track.
59. Custom/thin scrollbars for context view.
60. If fail to read a Gtk setting from DConf then try GSettings.
61. Send a message (default to 'status') at least once every 30 seconds to keep command connection alive.
62. Fix inconsistent default cover sizes.
63. French translation - thanks to Jaussoin Timothée.
64. Seek 5seconds when control (or command for Mac) and lef/right arrow keys are pressed. (Seek setting may be changed via config file - refer to README for more details.)

Hya again

i guess im still missing something. i tried your suggestion from a few weeks ago but i still cant completely hide the artist/album info from the context view:
https://paste.xinu.at/ZGZ3Xf/

this is the best i can get ^^

its kinda bad looking, is there no way to just have lyrics showing in the cantata window. could i request that? i really dont need the artist/album info all the time and it wastes valuable space when i tile cantata

thx

You nee dto shrink the left hand side. If it becomes to small, Cantata places the three parts (artist, album, song) into 1 controlled by a combo.

Got it!

ok that makes sense :) its perfect now.

I cant seem to get cantata to use my local artist images. my folder structure is a bit non standard:

albums are stored like this
/home/zeltak/music/A/AC newman/get guilty/

and for artist images its stored in the artist root folder

/home/zeltak/music/B/Beck/beck.jpg

I think it does pick up the folder.jpg but not the actuall artist image.is the folder structure whats causing the problems?

Also i have alot of ideas/requests i would love to share with you and hear your opinion on and ill do it in another post?

thank you so much for all your work on cantata, its makes my life much more enjoyable each day ;-)

Just to clarify

it DOES actually use the artist image in the artists view, not in the context view for some reason, is that a bug or by design?

Ideally Cantata prefers afrtist.png/artist.jpg - but the way covers are searched for is detailed in the README.

When you say its not shown in the contet view - do you mean the context view background, or in the artist column? The artist column will use the same mechanism to get the image as the artist page - so this should (and for me does) work.

For the context view background, this image is not used - backgrounds are retreived from fanart.tv, or discogs if this fails - this is because these provide larger, wide-screen images. If both of these fail, Cantata should create a backdrop from the album covers.

Yeah i mean the context view. it does work really well in the artist column. I usually manually download the artist image with HD quality (and store it in the root artist folder). thats why i thought it would be using that but i understand now the content view pulls from the Internet, its not a big issue but perhaps allow an option to first look for available artist image in root folder and use that if available before fetching on-line? also if image isnt available perhaps add an option to save in root artist folder to complement the save cover/lyrics

ill move the rest of the feature/bug discussion to google code as you suggested

thx

 2 feature requests

by Rasi on: Nov 9 2013

Score 50%

libmpdclient got these 2 new features which would be cool to have in cantata:

first of all: sort library by modification time:
http://git.musicpd.org/cgit/master/libmpdclient.git/commit/?id=899d7edd245b6ab705e54f8748fc9ae021f83711

and 2nd: show custom tags:
http://git.musicpd.org/cgit/master/libmpdclient.git/commit/?id=d180dcbe8beec1cbab591978bd99cd9d432ab142

Wow

Great news from MPD. i have related ideas/requests to this so ill just raise them here, would really like to hear your thoughts on these CraigD.

1.make cantata keyboard friendly as much as possible:
currently its pretty usable but some areas are lacking for mouse free operation:
-add hotkey to focus play queue area and artist/album? perhaps the current keys to switch to context, artist etc will also focus the selected area?

2. building on what rasi reported/requested i think it would be finally great to have:
a) enhancements to the dynamic player using play dates (IE, not played in last X weeks, added in 2003 etc etc) and maybe ratings (see below) with new tag options
b)ratings-add a simple 5 level rating or rating numbers perhaps using the free desktop standard (FMPS_Rating)

https://gitorious.org/xdg-specs/xdg-specs/source/575138ee6db957618631de56940540d1bcdf8525:specifications/FMPSpecs/specification.txt

3) vertical interface that better works with 16:9 laptop screens IE have the play queue on bottom of the artist/context

4) button to open Google search in browser for lyrics with current playing song+artist for lyrics that cant be found and edited manually

thx alot, again if i can help in any non coding way (i am to dumb to code :)) let me know!!

Please use https://code.google.com/p/cantata/ for bug reports/feature requests.

1. Easy enough to do, and I suppose this makes sense :-)

2. You have asked for this before, and the response still stands. Until you can *query* for tracks by rating, last-played, or last-modified then this is a no go. The dynmic mode is a separate helper script - and this would need to be abe to query mpd - e.g. to find tracks by Abba with a rating>=3.5 'find artist "Abba" rating-gt 3.5' AFAIK, this is not supported.

3. I'll think about this, but I'm not convinced of its usefulness. Why not just place the playqueue in the sidebar?

4. You can already change the search terms - right click on the lyrics view, and select "Search"

First of all, Cantata does not use libmpdclient - so these are not directly applicable.

However, not sure what use these are goint to be. What is Cantata going to use last-modified for?

Until you can search using these fields, I dont see the usefulness.

I thought this is obvious :)
Sorting by modification time will always have newly added albums on top, which makes it easier to find those albums you havent listened much yet.

Yes, but what is the real point? I know which albums I've recently added, getting Cantata to display this is pretty pointless. Plus, it'd mean more data to store in Cantata's cache - slowing the read down, etc.

If you cannot query MPD using these - as in 'find artist abc added_gt 01/01/2013' then I dont see much use. If you could, then the feature would be usefull for a dynamic playlist - so that you could play new tracks, etc.

 Streams won't play in 1.2.0

Just tried installing 1.2.0 and streams won't play. Error message is mpd error: failed to decode <stream.address> .

Downgrading back to 1.1.3 and all is fine. Any clues as I really like cantata.

Just tried, and my streams play ok.

Which stream is failing? Is this a KDE, Qt4, Qt5, or Windows build? Are you behind a proxy?

Nothing from the streams list or favourites would play i.e. Soma, Shoutcast, Sky.fm. Tried removing all the config files and restarting but no good: 1.1.3 plays 1.2.0 doesn't (streams that is, everything else is fine).

This is what I get: http://im9.eu/picture/cant - no useful info from running cantata in a term.

Its a QT4 (KDE) build, no firewall or proxy

Another small piece of info, if a stream was left on the playlist from 1.2.0, starting 1.1.3 and trying to play it fails. It needs to be reloaded from the left panel then plays OK.

Most radio station URLs point to .pls or .m3u files - and MPD will not play these. So, Cantata will download the first 1k of data of a stream - and check if it is a playlist (pls, m3u, etc). If so it dsecodes this, and looks for an actual stream URL. If it finds one, it send this to MPD, otherwise it falls back to the original URL.

For some reason the above is not working for you in 1.2, but is in 1.1.

Please do the following:

1. Remove any items from MPDs play queue.
2. Stop Cantata
3. Restart Cantata as follows:

CANTATA_DEBUG=512 cantata

4. Load your stream as before.
5. When the error occurs stop Cantata

Cantata should now have logged some debug info into ~/.cache/cantata/cantata.log Please email this file to me. My email address is in the AUTHORS file.

Also, in future please open a bug report for issues. Thanks.

...also, how are you adding the stream? From a saved favourite, or just adding the URL to the playqueue?

If its from a favourite, what name have you given the station?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
