Description:

Cantata is a (yet another!) client for the music player daemon (MPD). Originally started as a fork of QtMPC, the code is now *very* different. Cantata can be compiled with KDE support, or as a pure Qt4 application. The interface is very configurable - most views can be shown as either a list or tree structure.

Currently Cantata has the following views:

1. Library - sorted as Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist not set), Album, and finally Track.
2. Albums - displays albums as icons, sorted by their title.
3. Folders - displays MPDs virtual filesystem. (This view is hidden by default)
4. Playlists
5. Dynamic - dynamic playlists
6. Streams - allows saving of internet radio URLs, searching for stations via TuneIn or ShoutCast, station listings from; Digitally Imported (+Sky, JazzRadio, RockRadio), TuneIn, IceCast, ShoutCast, SomaFM, etc.
7. Online - Jamendo, Magnatune, SoundCloud, and Podcasts
8. Devices - enables copying from/to USB-Mass-Storage (UMS) and MTP devices, and ripping AudioCDs

The sidebar has a context menu, allowing you to control its style and what items are shown.

Refer to http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Client:Cantata, and https://cantata.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/README, for further information.

Changelog:

1.4.0
-----
Main new features in this release:
1. Use external helper app to read/write tags. Isolates Cantata from TagLib crashes.
2. Lyrics auto-scroll.
3. Option to auto-switch to context view.
4. Toolbar reorganisation.
5. Comment tag support for tag-editor and dynamic playlists.
6. Attempt to respect menubar usage of current DE.
7. Reduce memory used by covers.
8. Artists and albums with new tracks shown in bold.
9. 'Touch Friendly' option - increases button widths, and makes views flickable.
10. Multiple genre support.
11. Streams now stored in '[Radio Streams]' MPD playlist. Compatible with MPDroid development version.
12. Use MusicBrainz AlbumId (if set) to differentiate albums. This helps if you have multiple releases of the same album.
13. Search for streams via dirble.
14. Reduce supplied stream providers to IceCast, ShoutCast, Drible, and TuneIn. Provide dialog to download others from Google drive.
15. Qt-only by default.
16. Scrobbling.
17. Show song lyrics, information, and tags, in context view.

 Can't install again!

by lionhater on: Mar 14 2012

Hi Craig. I'm impatient to try the new version, yet I can't install it again (on Mageia LXDE).

"make" command completes the build process 100%, but then adds this:

Linking CXX executable cantata
CMakeFiles/cantata.dir/http/httpserver.cpp.o: In function `HttpServer::encodeUrl(QString const&) const':
httpserver.cpp:(.text+0xb38): undefined reference to `Tags::read(QString const&)'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [cantata] Error 1
make[1]: *** [CMakeFiles/cantata.dir/all] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2
[root@localhost build]#

You need to install TagLib and TagLib-devel (or whatever thay are called in Mageia). For 0.5.1 I'll make TagLib mandatory - as it's used in other places, and will stop errors like this.

 Feature suggestions

by zeltakc on: Mar 14 2012

Hi again

Agian i gotta say how much i enjoy using cantata..just love it!

as promised ;-) here are some feature suggestions (by no mean "requests" ;-)) i thought you might find usefull:

1) use "backdrops" of the band behind the lyrics and mabe other views instead of the boring white bakcground. gmpc (a fantastic gtk mpd client) have beed using that for quite a while and i have been helping out there with the design. see example:

http://paste.xinu.at/b9J3/

backdrops btw can be auto fetched if one wants from http://www.htbackdrops.com/v2/index.php (they have a good API)

2) add an updateDB menu/button to manully launch a mpd database update

3)add support for the 'comment' tag in the tag editor (mpd supports the comment tag if enabled in .mpdconf)

4) have an option to jump to an album / add an album from te current playing song. that us right click on the current playing track and then get a go to album or add full album to playlist etc..

5) have an option to set bigger lyrics size or maybe have user options to change size/type of font?

would be intrested to hear your thought

best

Z.

1. Interesting idea. Not sure how well it would really work.I guess I'd need some sort of halo/blur behind the text...

2. The 'refresh' buttons in the library, albums, and folder views should trigger an MPD rebuild

3. Not sure. What is its use? Must admit I *always* strip the comment fields from my files. At the moment, Cantata caches all MPD information into an XML file (~/.cache/cantata/library/*.xml). This helps speed up restarts. The tag editor currently only supports the tags that are also in this file. Adding support for "comments" seems a little too much. I'd also need to add save/restore code for each file type - possible, just needs to be done.

4. Might be useful.

5. You can already increase the font size by using ctrl+mousewheel

Hya again

Thx for the quick response and the tip about the lyrics!

btw small bug aobut that, the lyrics zoom size isnt saved between session..no biggie...just to let you know.

As for the comment tag, i actually use it to have a "rating" system since mpd dosent really supports rating or "starts". i just tag a Fav song with 'F' (thats where the internal tag option in cantata could be cool). again its not a huge issue if its hard to add to the tag view.

Be warned that more ideas will follow as i continue to use cantata ;-)

thx again for all your work again!

Z.

P.S do you plan to maybe have a website/forum/irc channel for cantata?

Saving/restoring of zoom levels for lycris and info pages will be in 0.5.1

I'd rather implement a proper rating system - but its not high on my priority list, as its not something I would use. Dont really like the idea of modifying the song files themselves to store this. I had thought about using MPDs stickers (http://www.musicpd.org/doc/protocol/ch03s07.html) - but not sure.

As to website/forum/etc. never even thought about this. The first step would be to put the source code repositroy online somewhere. I have been thinking about this, but just have not gotten round to it.

 Arrrrggghhh!!!

At last the perfect music player, but not for non-KDE users!

Formerly instead of buttons I had legible texts: Play, Stop, Previous, Next etc. But they're jumbled now though usable. And volume icon has always been hidden, again usable when you mouse over there.

And Cantata can't load many album covers this time.

Icons are missing? The icon names should be from the free-desktop spec, so should load. Have the icons *always* been missing?

I've not changed the album cover loading code. You would need to send me more details of which covers you cant load.

No, formerly covers were not missing, they're now. All of my covers are cover.jpg inside the album folders as well as embedded in the (FLAC) tracks. Looked at a few of them. For example, a 34K jpg is missing while 12K and 124K jpgs are not. What else do you need to know?

Cantata will not read, or use, the embedded covers. Apart from filesize, whatelse is different between the displayed and missing ones? Are the missing ones owned by a different user, or group? Is the folder structure different? ie. does one, or more, of the folders contain odd chararcters? (Just guessing here...)

I can't see anything different really. They're all on a network drive and well-organized. For example some covers of Camel are missing and some are not. All the Bach covers are missing except one. All the Beatles covers are missing etc.

Perhaps I should re-scan library?

If possible, coud you email me one of the missing covers?

Also, if you email me I can send you a copy of the code with extra debug - so I can see what is going on.

Sure, but I don't know how to attach it. Couldn't see such an option in this site's email service. Any other way?

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
