FDesktopRecorder is a program that can video record a single window or your entire desktop using FFmpeg.

This can be handy for:
* "How-to's"
* Product demoes
* in-game videoes
* Educational videoes
* Recording Interactive whiteboards like "SMART Boards"
* etc.

Basic features:
* Video record a single window
* Video record your entire desktop
* Video record a region of your desktop

Based on a script by Peter Lyberth from the danish GNU/Linux show "Kanal Tux" http://www.kanaltux.dk

Please note: This is a early version of the program :-)

Requires:
https://github.com/froksen/FDesktopRecorder#requires-to-run

"Nice-to-know-stuff":
* Configurationfile: ~/.config/fdesktoprecorder/fdesktoprecorder.conf
* If you experience weird failues try removing the configurationfile and relaunch the program.

 KDE4 needed for what?

Hello,

this looks more like a QT app just using libphonon. What are the advantages over RecordItNow?

Hi..

KDE4 is mostly used for the notifications and for phonon, so yeah most of it is Qt.

Didn´t know of "RecordItNow" when I startet my project - there are a number of "ffmpeg recorders" arround, but it surely looks like a very useful and mature project :-)

I don´t know if there are any major advantages/disadvantages over "RecordItNow". But hey, diversity can be a good thing :-)

Use what best can furfill your needs and I hope that my project do so in some aspect :-)

Hi reiniger

Seems to be a rather old version that is beeing reviewed - although I can also see that this review is from February 4, 2012 so that might be why :-)

Much has happend since then but the basics is pretty much the same so - Thanks for the review/link :-)

Thanks alot for the fine comment :-)

FFmpeg does not currently support pausing when recording (AFAIK).
The only way is somehow to make a number of recordings and then merge them together after worth - I will maybe try to implement this in the future who knows :-)

Again thanks for the nice comment :-)

I didn't know it about FFMPEG... However your app is the best recorder that I'm used on linux (And believe me... I have tried a lot... Including Record It Now. that was mentioned by someone in the comments before.). Anyways... I always can edit the videos in another app... So keep the good work... :)

Froksen... A question... Is there any way to put the default format in OGG(OGV)? Well by default I can choose only AVI and MKV (MKV is great, but I use my videotutorials in OGV to put'em in HTML5 VIDEO tag)... :)

Thanks :)

Hi shang

Well, my program does not currently support ogv, although ffmpeg does.

I have been testing if there was a workarround, so you could do it directly - so far unsuccesfully, but maybe it works on your computer?

Four steps (Hard way):
- Open the fdesktoprecorder configuration file at ~/.config/fdesktoprecorder/fdesktoprecorder.conf
- Set videocodec from libx264 to libtheora
- Set defaultformat from avi to ogv
- Restart the program and try to record something
(If anything does wrong or you want to restore the settings, either use the "Reset" button in the settingsdialog or just remove the file fdesktoprecorder.conf and relanch the program)

Alternatively and the easy way you can do your recordings as *.avi or *.mkv and then convert them to ogv later in shell using:
ffmpeg -i input.avi output.ogv
or
ffmpeg -i input.avi -vcodec libtheora output.ogv

Hope it helps :-)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
