Description:

Here's a 'set it and forget it' backup system which might look rather familiar to the backup solution supplied with a certain well-known fruit based computer. It comes with a configuration interface for KDE's plasma desktop.
Please see the Wiki at https://sourceforge.net/p/ktardis/wiki/Home/ for installation instructions as there are dependencies you might need to install:
(On Kubuntu sudo apt-get install libfilesys-df-perl libdatetime-perl libdate-manip-perl)

Changelog:

Version 0.07 fixes a bug that was preventing the widget from starting
Version 0.06 adds improved error handling and a stats display. NOTE: It also adds a new dependency on libdate-manip-perl.
Version 0.05 adds a real-time display of backup progress and one or to small tweaks.
Version 0.04 fixes a bug where when backing up over SSH, the disc would eventually fill up because the maximum used discspace percentage wasn't working

License:
This is SpongWare.
The use of SpongWare is entirely according to the following conditions:
1) You may use it or not, I don't care. Just don't winge at me, I hate that
2) It is provided 'as is'. Nobody is responsible for anything it might or might not do.
3) You may distribute it freely, although I would advise against printing it out and throwing it out of the window, that stuff gets you fined
4) You may alter it if you wish, and distribute the altered version if you wish but you must include this license
5) Before installing this, smile at someone you like
6) There is no rule 6
7) This notice must be included with any copy of this you distribute
8) 'Coding standards' are to be regarded with suspicion.
9) If tardis goes wrong in any way, for example it deletes all your info or perhaps it wipes the entire internet overnight and leaves the world a dead place, nobody is responsible. Deal with it.

The backup on short intervals, ie, per hour, etc., are those incremental or full backups? It's just that your description doesn't mention it.

Thanx for a cool thing.

All the backups are incremental (except the first one).
However it's a bit different from what you might be used to as regards full/incremental backups.
Because of the way it works (using rsync and hard linking), when you browse the backup folders every backup looks like a full backup - i.e. no matter which backup folder you browse you will see the full contents of your home directory as it was at that time.

Is this because of linking to unchanged files and actually saving only those that are newly revised?

Thanx.

Yes, exactly that. It uses hard linking, so when you view the directory (or count the total disc space used by its contents) everything appears as an actual file, not a link.

Though the name fits, I'd guess it is a property of BBC or whoever created the name.

It would be better to change it now, than to receive a IP breach notice.

Cheerio!

Yeah I know... but it's such a perfect fit. I'll wait until they catch up with me or I come up with a better name.

 how to install it?

How can I install it? I am on Fedora KDE and the widget installer needs a .plasmoid file, and there is not one.

I've never heard of a .plasmoid file.
Try searching for TARDIS on the widget installer - it should be available through "Get New Stuff" (or whatever they've decided to call it this week).
Otherwise you could just try renaming the .zip file to a .plasmoid file.
Or you could try 'plasmapkg -i tardis-0.04.zip'
If none of those work then I'm afraid I can't help you. It works on Kubuntu 11.10 with KDE 4.7. I guess the KDE guys have changed something again. I really wish they would make a decision and stick to it, it annoys the living **** out of everyone,

Not working for now, as the widget fails to launch when it's installed system-wide. Contacted the developer, will push an updated package if/when he fixes this issue.

Thank you for your work. I just want to ask you if you can make some whiter icon. When using dark plasma theme (u use Androbit) the icon is almost invisible. Thank you

:) I use a dark background as well and I know exactly what you mean :)
I have absolutely no ability at creating icons. The current one was downloaded from somewhere on the web. So yes I'd love to make a lighter one, but I don't have any idea how I'd manage it. I accept contributions :)

I solved it by using bright icon from Tango and replace it in the plasmoid folder.

The next version (0.06, in a few days hopefully) will have a choice of dark or light icons :)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
