 2 improvements

Hi Ion
Needless to say, your software is a "bijou". I have 2 suggestion for it:
- possibility to invert axes, in the sense that the lowest x value to be at the right side and the higher x value at left side. Both Grace and Labplot do that.
- when I want to remove some bad point from graph, usually I zoom in and then I remove the point. After that the graph is automatically zoomed out to the original graph. Can you set it to stay in the same state of zoom after removing the point?

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll add these features to the next release of QtiPlot.

Hi! I have a couple of remarks regarding your cool effort with this application: 1. I have some difficulties to get a proper spline plotting of my data, the Displayed graph always appears rather jagged. 2. When exporting to images formats, e.g. there is no control over the resolution of the exported file. When exporting to png one gets a 72 dpi file in which all text is mostly unreadable. It would be nice if one could control the resolution to increase the quality of the exported file. as it is I have to workaround this by exporting to eps first and then converting the file... 3. When exporting to png the image is basically transparent (as indicated in the help section). Areas included by text characters, e.g. the insides of O, o, g, a, 8... are white. Keep up the great work. The application gets better with every release! Cheers Juergen

 Problem with Make

Edited the qtiplot.pro to include the qwt and qwtplot3d include directories. Am attempting to install on Fedora Core 3 with KDE 3.4 desktop. Copied GSL, qwt and qwtplot3d libs to /usr/lib and QT files are in /usr/lib/qt-3.3. Make exited with following error:

That's a problem! I strongly advise you to use gcc < 4.0, or, if not, to recompile all the libraries used by QtiPlot with gcc 4.0.

Since I'm relatively new at this I do have a couple of questions:

1) To compile using gcc < 4.0 (I also have gcc-3.4.0) I edit the *pro files, correct?

2) If I go the recompilation of the libs route, which libs are you talking about? Qwt, gsl (which compiled fine) and qwtplot3d?

Thanks again!

Hi,

I'm not sure which is the best way to go. Maybe you should get rid of gcc 4 for the moment. If you keep it I fear that you should also compile the Qt libraries yourself, together with Qwt, QwtPlot3D and GSL.

Please tell me if you succeed in compiling QtiPlot.

QtiPlot 0.6.8 compiles succesfully with gcc 4 (Fedora Core 4 x86_64). I've just installed gsl & gsl-devel .rpm, compiled included qwtplot, then qwtplo3d, and, finally, qtiplot. I'll just check the new 0.6.9 version.

 ascii import

Hi! I really like your job!
I have one question. Did you try to import the bigger ascii files? I couldn't import a file which was a matrix 200x500. It looked like the program stopped answering or maybe I wasn't patient enough:) I'd be grateful for any suggestion.
Regards, Bogdan

Hi,

I've never tried to import such a huge ASCII file. It's very probable that your machine ran out of memory. I have no suggestions for the moment (except buy more RAM ).

First of all, thanks for this BIG, PROFESSIONAL and CUTE work.

I would like to make you some lame questions and suggestions, Ion:

1) Do the text boxes support any kind of Html tags? I've seen only 'b', but no other are documented.

2) Using a 'center' tag in a text box (legend) currently does not seem to center the text properly. Can you take a look at this? I mean, just getting a centering like this:
-------------------
| Legend title |
| ---- First curve |

3) Are you going to develop some documentation or user manual soon? If you need any kind of help for it, please drop me a message.

Thanks again, this is one of the most brilliant pieces of free software engineering I've ever seen.

Jon

Hi,

Thank you for your message and for the kind comments. Concerning the html tags, most of them work, but unfortunately the alignement tags don't, because in the code I'm forcing all text to start at the first column. I'll see what I can do for this, but I must tell you that this is not a priority on the "to do" list.

Regarding the documentation, I don't think I'll ever have the time to write it myself as I'm to busy with the code (and I also have to go to work, unfortunately), so any help is most welcome. I started implementing a basic help using html files a long time ago and, as you may have noticed by using the application, there's no progress in this direction.

If you ever plan to write some doc files, they should be in .html format, something like the Qt doc.

Best regards,
Ion

 Feature request

To start with I love this project. I will use it for as long as you develop it! It is so easy view plots! Much easier than gnuplot.

One thing that would be nice is the ability to lay a grid over the ploted data. I have looked for this ability in the menus and have not seen it. I am not 100% sure if it exists or not. Anyway, I think this would be a nice feature.

Thanks again and please keep up the good work!

Lee

Hi,

Thanks for your comments. It is possible to have a grid. Double click on an axis or go to "Format|Axes" menu. This will open a pop-up dialog where you can set a lot of preferences for your plots.

Best regards,
Ion

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
