Description:

CONTENTS
1. Changed the plastik theme to draw a lighter line as listview branch.
2. Rounded selection in iconview (konqueror/kdesktop)*
3. A modern looking rubberband (gnome/xp semi-transparent style).*
4. Modified dialogs when in iconlist mode to highlight item on mouse over (mozilla-firefox).
5. Added a new konqueror sidebar look.
Idea from http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=17049
6. Now sidebar is saved per profile (bug 58580)
7. Fixed bug 88964 (Highlighting of files in Detailed List View does not
correspond to the area of activation).

Obs.: All patches are tested in kde-3.3.1/qt-x11-free-3.3.3 official
sources. I can't garantee that they will work in other kde versions.

* some patches are modified versions from the patches found in
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-core-devel&m=107624741505943&w=2

GOOD NEWS
I started a thread in kde-devel mailing list to discuss the insertion of the patches in next kde release.
See http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-devel&m=109863377620287&w=2
Some of the improvements are already in KDE CVS.
I contacted trolltech and they are analyzing the patches.

TIPS
- To improve the performance of the rubberband try to enable the option
"RenderAccel" in your XF86Config file.
(sinve version 0.5.2 the rubberband performance is improved)
- To enable the new konqueror sidebar look add the line "SidebarStyle=1" in the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/konqsidebartng.rc in the group that has the same name of the profile you want to change:
For example:
[webbrowsing]
SidebarStyle=1

If anyone has more ideas (original ideas) to add to this patches, tell me and perhaps i will try to implement them.

Changelog:

v1.0.0: (2004-Nov-28)
* fixed bug with rubberband in iconview mode.
* added install instructions.

v0.5.5: (2004-Oct-31)
* fixed bug when new rubberband effect is disabled.

v0.5.4: (2004-Oct-31)
* added rubberband color cache (improve rubberband performance a little more). I can't do incremental patch cause i'm using the KDE CVS version now. The only file that was modified is kdelibs/kdefx/kstyle.cpp

v0.5.3: (2004-Oct-31)
* improved rubberband performance in iconview (now only the modified area is draw).
* fixed bug when drawing rubberband and right mouse button is clicked.
* added incremental patch. For those who are using version 0.5.2 just apply the patches found in dir patches-0.5.2.
Note: Only use the patches found in dir patches-0.5.3 if you are using version 0.5.2. Any doubt how to use this mail me.
* added TODO file. If you found any bug not in TODO mail me, and i will try to fix.

v0.5.2: (2004-Oct-26)
* fixed error in drawing the item background in konqueror detailed view mode when that is a background image set. You just need to recompile kdebase/konqueror/listview.

v0.5.1: (2004-Oct-26)
* fixed compile error in kdebase/konqueror/listview.

v0.5.0: (2004-Oct-25)
* a lot of cleanup and refactoring.
* fix bug in konqueror detailed view mode that made the alternate background lines draw incorrect (thanks to DarkLord to point this out).
* now no app will be affected by the patch for bug 88964.
* modified qt patches to kde ones so is more easy to get they accepted by kde developers.
* removed kdepim patch (no more necessary).

What is the current state of the patches?

What patches have been integrated into KDE HEAD and what haven't been posted (if possible, why)?

Thanks.

 Debian packages

The kalyxo project made the debian packages for unstable, until the server goes up again, you can install adding this line to your sources.list

deb http://www.deadhand.com/kalyxo/ unstable main

and then run this command after apt-get update

apt-get install kde-improvement

this install the minimun requirements to get all patches working.

If you type

apt-get upgrade

you will download all the +kalyxo0 branch.

which version of the patches was used to build the deb's? it all looks so beautiful, except the rubberband is totally FU, don't know why. (crappy PC here)

here you have a shot:
http://pollycoke.org/linux-help/gente/felipe/kde-improvementsbug.png

I hope there's a way to keep everything BUT the rubberband thingie, right now i'm trying to reinstall my previous kdesktop and konqueror

As far as I remember you can disable the rubberband-effect specifically in KControl. Go to Style -> Effects and have a look at the Options under "Enable GUI Effects".
Be sure that "Enable GUI Effects" IS selected, otherwise you will have the new rubberband enabled.
I already mailed andrunko with this bug ("Enable GUI Effects" = OFF should mean to use the simple rubberband).

The debs on deadhand with the kalyxo ending are based on the 0.5.5 version of the patch and KDE versions are:
kdebase_3.3.1-2
kdeartwork_3.3.1-1
kdelibs_3.3.1-1
qt-x11-free_3.3.3-5

Have fun :)

before i test it again enabling that "GUI Effects" option: what does this should disable? just the rubberband effect or other improv.'s as well?

and by the way: there's a very simple hack to avoid those nasty lines in plastik windows' statusbar, you can find it here:

http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=17363

i'll report it here the suggestion from daywalker636:
---------------------
search for this in plastik.cpp:

case PE_StatusBarSection: {
renderContour(p, r, cg.background(), cg.background().dark(160), Draw_Left|Draw_Right|Draw_Top|Draw_Bottom);
break;
}

comment out the 2 lines. This should remove the frames in the status bars.
---------------------

is there a possibility to have it included in the improved deb's? or a way to grab kalixo plastik's modified sources to compile them myself? better yet: andrunko, any chance you'll include that into your improvements?

thanks everybody
felipe

Hmm, can't find the option to disable the new rubberband right now.

But about the hack (and is a hack, an ugly one) to remove the lines in the status bar - I thing andrunko shouldn't include this in these "improvements".
Application developers put those lines there for a reason and in many cases they are a visual help. Konqueror might not make very good use of the status bar lines, but in other cases they make a lot of sense, so it should NOT be done anything about it within the _style_. If at all it should be changed inside the application.

 install-uninstall

Sory for not being well informed but let assume that one installs the path (from package - slackware is mine particular choise). Is it possible with simple uninstalation of the package to "restore" the original settings?

Anyway it looks great on the screenshots. By the way (off topic) what kind of icon selection do you use - it is cool and I want to install it.

 BUG Report

by felipe on: Nov 27 2004

Score 50%

andrunko, i posted this early in response to melenas, here's a shot showing what happens on my box:
http://pollycoke.org/linux-help/gente/felipe/kde-improvementsbug.png

the problem also happens in konqueror's icon view window, but NOT in detailed, list or text view

any suggestion? enabling GUI Effects as suggested elsewhere didn't work.

All of you that are having this problem with the rubberband. Probably you had a problem with your qt patches cause this bug only happens (in my box) when i forget to compile the qt with the patches. The iconview rubberband code and the listview code are almost the same and if one works the other should work too. The only difference is that one is a qt patch and other is a konqueror patch.
Any doubt mail me and i will try to help you. Anyway the rubberband has a problem that i will try to fix, buf for sure this is not the case.

cheers
Andrunko

andrunko, many thanks! you suggestion helped a lot.

for those of you using the kalyxo deb's:

once you apt-get install kde-improvement you have another step to follow:
just manually download && install those packages from
http://www.deadhand.com/kalyxo/ :

libqt3c102_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb
libqt3c102-mt_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb
libqt3-compat-headers_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb
libqt3-headers_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb
libqt3-mt-dev_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb
qt3-dev-tools_3.3.3-5+kalyxo0_i386.deb

they have a slightly minor version number than sid's official packages, so they are skipped by apt and not installed. once you grab them and install by a simple `dpkg -i *.deb` you can restart kde and enjoy the new
rubberband ;-)

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
