Submitted:  Oct 20 2004
Updated:  Feb 26 2008

Description:

Dragon Player is a video player for KDE 4 that focuses on simplicity
and easy of use. It is the successor of Codeine, a player for KDE 3.

It is now available in gutsy-backports, check out the Dragon Player website if you use Kubuntu.

Changelog:

2.0.1
Removed the locking of the volumeSlider if the mute is active

2.0.0
Fixed issue where if the user ESCed the play media dialog it wouldn't reappear.
Pressing 'M' causes mute
Return to the logo when playback is explictly stopped
New Icon
Fixed crash on double click in KPart Bug #157579
The volumeSlider is locked if the mute is active

2.0-rc1
Fix status bar title disappearing on window resize
Can turn off subtitles
Can revert to the 'auto' audio channel
Save subtitle and audio channel selection
New DBus API under /Player and /TrackList. A full implementation of MPRIS.
Fix pausing and then playing causing the window size to revert.
A new smart "Play Disc" button that plays whatever kind of media is inserted and
if more then one disc is inserted it lets you pick which disc to play.
As a result, Video CD's and Audio CD's are now experimentally supported.

2.0-beta1
Fix hang on close when paused
Restore cursor hiding over the playing video widget
Restore video settings widget (contrast, brightness), as a sidebar instead of a window.
Restore KPart
Save video settings
Audio channel selectable
Volume slider toolbar. Volume saved globally, not per-file.
Imported Amarok's runtime-selectable debug() system

2.0-alpha1
New maintainer: Ian Monroe
Renamed to Dragon Player
Ported to Qt4, KDE4 and Phonon. Many feature regressions. None of Codeine's bugs though... a whole new set!

 codeine for SUSE

You can grab a full-featured codeine package for SUSE Linux from the Packman repository:
http://packman-test.links2linux.org/package/codeine

And BTW, although your work is much respected, your comment itself is pretty ridiculous. Either ArchLinux is illegally shipping WMV and other codecs it has not licensed (amongst others, I doubt it has the 60000 EUR to license the MPEG patents, including the fact that macrovision isn't supported on Linux as of now anyway) or people are just not getting the necessary information.
The packman repository has all you need for full-featured media playback on SUSE Linux.

Eh.. wow.. great ;)
Well, anyway, I see you're not interested by the fact that there are RPM packages of codeine for SUSE Linux users, that's a pity.
As the discussion seems to be useless, to say the least, I'd still like to say thank you for your work on your OSS projects.

Keep up the good work.

Heh, I apologise for my snide comment. I am interested by the fact there are RPMs available, and will advertise the fact in due course. Thanks for the packages, and for not reacting badly to my rudeness... :)

Problem installing Codeine today from the KDE-Apps.org site, to Mandriva
Cooker on an IBM Thinkpad T22. Here's the console trace:

]$ ./configure && make && su -c "make install"

Unpacking mini-scons...done

Configuring Codeine 1.0.1...

Checking for kde-config           :  kde-config was found
Checking for kde version          :  3.5.2
Checking for the qt library       :  qt is in /usr/lib/qt3/
Checking for uic                  :  uic was found as /usr/lib/qt3//bin/uic
Checking for moc                  :  moc was found as /usr/lib/qt3//bin/moc
Checking for the qt includes      :  ok /usr/lib/qt3//include/
Checking for the kde includes     :  ok /usr/include/
Checking for KDElibs 3.3...ok
Checking for main() in C++ library xine... no

Configure could not find either the xine library or header on your system. You
should ammend the relevant paths. If you know which ones please email me so I
can update this message!

Especially the media:/ ioslave support is superb.

What I like about codeine:

1. very very responsive movie slider.
2. Playback restore
3. media:/ ioslave support :)
4. codeine icon, that's a nice icon.

thanks! I appreciate your work :)

 Can't play ioslave

by maarizwan on: May 16 2006

files which are present in * system:/media/hdd * are not playable with codeine.

but codeine can play files from media:/hdd

that's strange.

could you please implement system:/ ioslave support.

hmm, it's a pity the system slave isn't redirected, I'll add support.

Eventually KIO can be native so I don't have to add support all the time for different slaves.

Love this application. Does what it should do with no hassle.

I don't see no point using playlists when watching a film once each third year.

Codeine rocks...

Hi,
First, thank you for this grate app!

I use latest version and have some problems :
- Video window still judder (well, kind of - video window move down) when tool bar is shown in fullscreen.
- For most of my videos codeine is unable to set correct video ratio. (divx videos for most of them)

If I can help with some output, just let me know :)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
