Description:

Kuote is an applet for the KDE panel, inspired by Gnome's Wanda the Fish. It displays an animated character (a fish by default), which pops up quotes generated by the fortune(6) program when clicked (and optionally shows them in tooltips, too).

Kuote supports kioslaves for both the animation file and fortune files (fortune directories still work from local filesystems only). This means that you can enter any URL, not only local file names. Try for example this fortune file available over WWW: http://hektor.umcs.lublin.pl/~mikosmul/computing/inet-fortune
It contains only two quotes, so for testing purposes use it as the only fortune file or assign it a high probability if you want to actually see these fortunes.

Note that if you make fortunes available on the Web or any other medium, you need to make both the fortune file and the corresponding .dat index file available. However, you should only enter the former one in the configuration dialog box - the other one will be downloaded automatically.

Features
* support for user-defined animations (file format compatible with Wanda the Fish)
* run fortune or any other program to generate quotes
* fortune can be configured through the GUI

Changelog:

2005-01-05 (version 0.9.3)
* added new animation: "See, Hear, Speak" (CC-BY-NC-SA license) - thanks to Mark Riedesel [Klowner]
* added French translation (thanks to Nicolas Ternisien)
* added "Next" button to fortune dialog
* fixed a memory leak associated with dialog boxes

2004-12-14 (version 0.9.2)
* added kioslave support for animation and fortune files (fortune dirs still work from local filesystems only)
* small usability improvements
* reduced animation flicker
* new eye candy when mouse is over the animation

2004-12-07 (version 0.9.1)
* removed dependency on KDE 3.3 (this time for real)
* fixes in .lsm file
* slightly reduced animation flicker
* output of fortune is now decoded according to locale-defined charset

2004-12-02 (version 0.9)
* settings are now saved and restored correctly
* made GUI for selecting fortune file sets work
* removed dependency on KDE 3.3
* 'Consider file sizes in probabilities' now works correctly

2004-11-20 (version 0.8)
* initial release
* saving settings doesn't work yet
* custom fortune file sets can't be selected from the GUI yet
* other things mostly work

Do you use KDE 3.3.x ? The KActionSelector widget was only added in 3.3 AFAIK, so you can't compile it if you have an older version. Sorry about this - maybe I'll use another widget in the next version in order to make compiling with older KDE possible.

Oh, I'm sorry. I missed that :P
Well, I'm to lazy to upgrade, but however,
I'm looking forward to try your app.

Please try version 0.9 or newer, I removed the KActionSelector widget so now Kuote should compile with KDE < 3.3.

I can confirm that it compiled flawlessly under KDE 3.2.1

 Compilation problem

 by PKP on: Jan 9 2005

"configure" script doesn't generate a warning that Qt (3.2.1) is too old.

During compilation I've got a message:
make[3]: Entering directory `/home/pawel/instalki/kuote-0.9.3/src'
/usr/lib/qt-3.2.1/bin/uic -L /opt/kde/lib/kde3/plugins/designer -nounload -o PrefProgramLayout.h ./PrefProgramLayout.ui
uic: File generated with too recent version of Qt Designer (3.3 vs. 3.2.1)

 Compile error

On my Gentoo 2.6.11 with KDE 3.4.1, you need to do ./configure --prefix=/usr/kde/3.4
to avoid the following error : checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

Is there a way to put a timer to get new tooltip fortune every tick, or do I have to edit it myself?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
