Not much chance unless a company or someone sponsors the release. I tried TuxShop as GPL, and so far no support or donations have been made, other than a translation to pt_BR.

Hello,
I would be glad to do a german translation and to promote the program. It should not be a problem getting donations then.
Please contact me.

It might be in the CVS. I didn't tried it, but this seems to be the only location to get the sourcecode, unless it isn't included in the rpm package.

Do you know how expensive bandwidth is in South Africa ? or how long it takes me to upload stuff via a normal (and very expensive) phone link ?

You want the source, get it from CVS, and remember there is know reason whatsoever that I need to release the code under GPL ! I do it for freedom not a freebie !

 Qt 3.x and Windows

I don't know, whether you have a licence for Windows, but afaik there is no free Version of Qt for Windows in the 3.x series! So I wonder about the Windows version of your project ...

The new Qt 4.x exists in a GPL like licence for non commercial projects like GPL Software. So it might be better for you to switch to this qt version.

Another thing that irritates me is the phrase on your page, where someone mentioned to you, that is is not suitable to beg for donates on a GPL project site; I think there is no problem with it at all! The GPL licence is primary developed to save the freeness of the software, e.g. the source code.

To be shure not to violate the GPL you shall make the source code easier available! Make a tar archive and put it on the download page. Getting it by CVS is shurely enough to satisfy the GPL licence, but it would be better this way.

If I did not have a license how on earth would you be able to get a windows binary ?

I will not change to Qt4 until I have a new set of Qt licenses. I won't do that till Qt4 is a LOT more complete, the new KDE will help that.

Don't complaint to me, that someone is Ikobo who threatened me with legal action if I did not remove the request for donations.

If enough people think that access to sources via CVS only is a violation of the GPL, its simple I will just discontinue the open source version of TuxShop, so lets vote..

All in favour of opensource via CVS on Sourceforge, raise your hands.

All those in favour of terminating TuxShopGpl because CVS is not easy enough, raise your hands.

And now after this frustration, I think maybe even easy to use binary versions of TuxShop might not make it to SF.

Sorry but this has nothing to do with what you or I vote on. If you use a license you need to abide by it. That simple.

If you don't like a particular license then pick another one, or make one up.

GPL has this part that says share source or show us where to get it.

That does not sound compatible with what you want to offer. (Which judging by your score looks like a good product.) Fortunately, as the author, you can change the license as often as you want to whatever you want.

So rather than pretending to be GPL why don't you just pick something that fit your needs in a license?

Oops, I see you are offering it but only by CVS. Which is source. Don't know if that is even covered. But sounds OK.

The only point I was trying to make is that it is not up to our votes, the GPL says what it says.

Just because "your code" is licensed under the GPL this has no effect on your ability to sell it as a product. So don't beg for money value add your product ie with support and customisations good example extra icons company logo's services integration etc.

Think as this product as your "foot in the door", ie "if you think this is good for a fee I can even customise the software to fit your companies needs and assist in your ability to increase your profits productivity".

Also you may want to look at QT 4 so you can also distribute the code as GPL on the windows platform.

So don't forget it's about "value adding" and "services".

Sometimes in this age of high technology the best tool is a rock.

I have to agree with this. Patience, btw, is a virtue worth having. I understand and appreciate your position, and just because you release it as GPL, doesn't mean you can't sell support. Support is truly were the money is in GPL software. Service, not product.

I'm assuming you have marketed this to the local vets in SA? In the USA vets, along with a lot of companies are moving to GPL and purchasing support contracts. Which is cheaper than buying software and barely receiving any support, much less competent support.

Good luck,

 'Tux'shop

I find it weird you call this software 'TUXSHOP' while it's not GPL'ed.

Something with the name 'tux' in it is supposed to be complying to 'tux' software. It might be me, but I have a hard time seeing this as open source software, like you'd expect of something with the name tux in the title.

Is that GUI with category images a touch-sensitive screen _AND_ done in Linux?

Pretty amazing, I thought this was still a new frontier for Linux.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
