Updated:  Mar 16 2008

Description:

Kate Symbol Viewer is a sidebar plugin for Kate that has been integrated in KDE since version 3.2.0.
It allows developers to view symbols (functions, macros and data types) from source code.
By clicking the parsed information you can easily browse the code.
At the moment the following languages are supported:
C/C++, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, XSLT, Tcl/Tk, Fortran

Feature list:
- List/Tree mode
- Enable/disable sorting
- Hide/Show Functions Parameters
- Can expand/collapse tree mode
- Auto-update on document change
- Code parsing is based on Kate highlighting

Changelog:

1.11.0
Improved PHP parser (thanks to Gef)
Improved Fortran parser (thanks to Louis). Support on/off parameters display as well
ANSI C89 supported
key navigation now handles Return key press

1.10.0
*** Added Ruby support

1.9.0
*** Added preliminary PHP support
*** Added XSLT support (thanx to Jiri Tyr)

1.8.1
- perl parser patch (thanx to josander)
- python supports multiline defs/classes
- sorting mode on popup menu

1.8.0
*** Added JAVA support
Basically it uses an improved version of the C++ parser. Not being a Java developer, I would kindly need any feedback from the users.
Following the changes:
- support for classes (not nested, sorry )
- fixes on comments also for macros
- support for inline functions

Configuration Page
- option to automatically expand nodes when in tree mode

This is a version for KDE-apps.org for the KDE 3.5.x users. The mainstream changes are applied only to the KDE 4 SVN trunk.

For a complete changelog please refer to KDE 4 SVN:
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdesdk/kate/plugins/symbolviewer/
or KDE 3.5 branch:

Thanks for the Perl support! It works well.

I would have couple of suggestions:

1) it would be nice to you follow to the user module if I double click on it
2) it would be very handy to have option to keep the tree list always expanded

If you add this two things, your plugin will be very useful. Thanks for your good job.

Cheers,
Jiri

I just realized that I spend about 20% time less to code now! Not needing to remember the line numbers and scroll around for functions is awesome. Yey! Thx again.

I'm not sure the dependency on KDE3.3.x is still true. On KDE3.4.2 the compile stops with the error:

you need KDE 3.5. There is no other way around it but fixing the code for KDE < 3.5.

Java support is actually the next language I will integrate ! I'm only making up my mind on how much code I can reuse from the C++ parser.
In any case...stay tuned...and thanks ! ;)

 Prototyping in perl

Hi,

You've made a great plugin! May I suggest a small change which will make the plugin not show prototypes as subs in perl:

I apologise that the formatting (no PRE and tabs) on the diff above is wrong, but I think you see the diff.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your patch !
I'll add this functionality and you'll be able to enable/disable it from the configuration page with the already existing option.
Cheers.

Hi again, I just realized that I misunderstood what your patch does. I integrated it and will be available on the next release. So, ignore the previous comment.
Sorry...I'm not a Perl programmer :(

 bugs?

by whiskybar on: Mar 19 2007

Score 50%

I absolutely love the Python support!

However I have found the python parser won't recognize functions like foo:

def foo(arg1,
arg2):
pass

Where can I post bug reports? I looked into bugs.kde.org but did not know into which section cppsymbolviewer belongs.

I looked into python_parser.cpp and found the parser is just too simple to handle declarations that span multiple lines; the parsing goes in a loop over the lines and therefore those declarations won't match the regular expression for functions.

Hi, thanks for your feedback.
Actually, having a quick look at the code what you say is definitely true !
I'll have a deeper look and will fix it.
In general, if you want to post your wish/bug report or else, you can use the kwrite development list:
https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kwrite-devel
Please keep in mind that being KDE 4 under heavy development, the mailing list can be quite verbose...
Cheers

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
