remember to change the line "version=3.3" on your *.ui files located inside WirelessAssistant / src to "version=3.2" so it can be cleanly compiled using kde/qt 3.2 :)

Do you know knetworkconf? It seems it will become part of KDE soon and it will include wireless configuration.

Yes, I do. However, the purpose of knetworkconf and my app is somewhat different. I'm neither trying nor want to create something like knetworkconf, but rather an app that would allow ppl (and me, of course;) quickly connect to a wnetwork at, for example, a public hotspot while travelling.
I you have any good ideas on how to improve it - feel free to write me!

This seems to be a known bug in qt (uic) versions prior to 3.3.2. You should have no problems once you upgrade.

Could you use a grapchic instead of a text under the "Link quality" column?

I think that the graphics used on kwirelessmonitor would look really good for this...

mmm ...
same could be said about the "Encryption" column ...

look in your system under (kdeinstall)/share/icons/default.kde/22x22/actions
encrypted.png and decrypted.png would do it IMHO ...

what do you think?

 Interface detection

by jcw on: Apr 3 2005

Score 50%

Hi, thanks for your efforts! Your program is most needed! Sadly my wireless interfaces don't get detected. I don't know how you do it, but this is the output from iwconfig:

eth1 unassociated ESSID:off/any Nickname:"ipw2100"
Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Power:off
Retry:on RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"" Nickname:"zd1201"
Mode:Managed Channel:6 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon

Perhaps you have an idea why these interfaces don't get recognised...
Thanks very much,

Joost

Thanks for your feedback!
I think the problem might lie in improper parsing of iwconfig output if more that one interface is present. I have only one so I wasn't able to test this code thoroughly. I try to debug it anyway, so wait for the next release and it should be fixed.

 Working well

I like your application, even though it is only graphical and user specific.
A working aquivalent for the console would be good.

For the next future I only propose:
- kicker applet (optional)
- option: don't ask for key if its name matches the network essid (in most cases that is obvious); maybe a checkbox for each key
- automatic mode which connects without user interaction by a certain set of rules

rules could be: a priority number assigned to each network, but this would require a remember function or the simplest: prefere open networks.

Thx for your comments!
I'm still rethinking (over and over) the kicker applet idea. On one hand this would ease the process to the user, on the other hand I believe that in most cases this should be a single-shot application: u turn on your computer, connect to wireless network and don't need the application until the next startup. So... well... still have to think it over.

As for the 'auto-select key if name matches essid' option - you're right, so this behaviour is the default. Option stays there if anybody wishes to change it for any reason (you never know...). It doesn't hurt.

A console option to automate the whole process is already on my TODO list. I just don't know when will I have time to realise this idea.

Thx again! :)

"u turn on your computer, connect to wireless network and don't need the application until the next startup"

I do agree with that one ...
Actually I was about to ask you to inculde 2 features in regards to that:

A) an option to " exit upon succesful connection " that would terminate the program once a conecction has benn made

B) an option to " star the following program once a connection has been made ".

In that way wlanassistant would connect me to my wireless network, start my preferred wireless monitor and exit :)

see ya

Pd: a sourceforge.net proyect would be nice by now ;)

Both seem fine so I'll put them on my todo list.
PS: Sourceforge project? It already is. :)

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
