Description:

Builds KDE from its Subversion source repository. Well, that and a *LOT* more...

It builds qt-copy, easily supports being run from cron, allows module-specific options such as configure flags, logs everything, and generally makes it as easy as possible to manage a bleeding edge KDE installation.

kdesvn-build supports quick checkouts using the daily KDE-generated Subversion checkout snapshots. When available, it can reduce your checkout time and reduce the strain on the svn.kde.org servers.

kdesvn-build by default will install things into a ~/kde directory, but it supports using your system KDE if you just want to install e.g. an application from Extragear.

It's incredibly featureful, although I've tried hard to setup sane default options so that you don't have to worry about twiddling the knobs.

kdesvn-build supports both KDE 3.5 and KDE 4. See the "use-stable-kde" option in the included kdesvn-buildrc-sample for more information.

Basically, using use-stable-kde makes kdesvn-build prefer the 3.5 version of a module to any trunk version. This saves you from having to add a lot of 'branch' options.

Changelog:

v1.6.2 fixes the sample configuration to build phonon after kdesupport (and some other tweaks) and reduces the number of set_option() warnings in certain unusual (but allowed) situations.

The full changelog is available with the tarball and at http://kdesvn-build.kde.org/releases/kdesvn-build-1.6.1.php

 "--remove-builddir"

Can you please add an option ("--remove-builddir") to automatically remove the "build/module_name" directory after a successfull build and install of "module_name".
This would be great for people with litle free disk space. I'm on this situation and currently I have to build each module at a time and then go on to remove the "build/module_name" directory, only then can I go on to build the next one.
The build directories are not needed after install and they take up a lot of space.
And making it an option makes it safe for ordinary unaware people ;).

P.S.: it could even be a per module setting.

Sounds like a nice idea, and I'm always looking to make kdesvn-build more convenient to use. Perhaps you could file a bug/wishlist item on kdesvn-build on the KDE Bugzilla at http://bugs.kde.org/ ? I know it may be a bit of hassle but it makes it much easier for me to track outstanding bugs and feature requests, especially since I don't often check the comments on this page.

 logging

I wish there was better logging(?) maybe I'm missing it but I just built a while ago, meant to write down the compilation failures and now I can't find them (without digging). Perhaps I've missed where it's at?

Logs are kept for every kdesvn-build you do. Normally they are kept in the /log directory of your KDE source folder. (By default this is ~/kdesvn/log). The last kdesvn-build log can be reached in log/latest. The others are dated and then numbered. For example, you may have a folder ~/kdesvn/log/2005-07-27-01. In each of these log folders is a directory for each module that kdesvn-build dealt with. The module directory contains all the logs pertaining to that module. If a module failed for some reason, there will be an error.log file explaining why. To break it all down, if e.g. kdelibs failed for some reason on your last run, you could find out why by looking at ~/kdesvn/log/latest/kdelibs/error.log Hope this helps.

 kdebase not found

why is that KDEBASE is not getting compiled on my system? arts and kdelibs and kdesupport got compiled properly?

it says "Can't find kdebase folder" which is there but it can't find it. :(

I have gcc 4.0.1 and enabled the configuration for gcc 4.0.1 and have qt 3.3.5 built with gcc 4.0.1.

but kdebase is not getting compiled :(

All of These are not getting compiled :(

kdebase
kdemultimedia
kde...

only compilable stuff are kdelibs, arts, and kdesupport. could you please enlighten.

 kde-config missing

by maarizwan on: Jul 28 2005

Score 50%

that means kdelibs was not compiled hence kdebase and other packages did not compile.

I removed all kde 3.4.1 packages and qt. that's why kde-config is missing hence no kdebase and other kde packages getting compiled ;)

 svn cleanup

by maarizwan on: Aug 7 2005

wouldn't it be good if kdesvn-build script do the svn cleanup and re-checkout the packages from svn?

asking the user to do svn cleanup is IMHO annoying.

Now I know this isn't actually usefull yet, but I want to try it anyway.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
