Description:

After many failed attempts, it seems I've finally managed to built a binary package that works in most common distros (tested in Slacware 12, Kubuntu 7.10 and openSUSE 10.3 -32bits only!)
Sorry for the inconveniences...

Adds a menu entry, 'transKode', to the playlist popup menu which allows reencoding of selected tracks using predefined profiles (use the 'configure' option to add, remove or edit them).

Required dependencies:
* amaroK >= 1.3 (http://amarok.kde.org/)
* TagLib >= 1.4 (http://developer.kde.org/~wheeler/taglib.html)

NOTE: x86 32bits executable provided, for other archs you can use your distro packages or compile from source:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/transkode

Changelog:

Version 0.7:
- Fix: bug preventing Amarok TTMD to finish if there was a transcoding error
- Fix: decoding/encoding processes priority setting was not correctly applied

Version 0.7beta:
- New: make gstreamer decoder work for both 0.8 and 0.10 version (and drop spider plugin dependency)
- New: support ffmpeg both as decoder and encoder
- New: support xine as decoder (through an ad hoc utility: xineadump)
- New: support winamp plugins as decoder (through an ad hoc utility: wadump -also needs wine)
- New: support twolame encoder
- New: add ASCII function for output path generation
- New: allow editing output metadata (and extend support for composer and disc number to more formats)
- New: various gui improvements (such as using KDE widgets where possible)
- New: show status image (found/missing) for each program in the configuration dialog
- New: add additional profiles for Amarok transfer to media device (aac, flac, wav & wma)
- New: allow multiple simultaneous jobs (seems to crash when showing realtime progress though...)
- Fix: wrong use of wvunpack switches caused deletion of the input file!
- Fix: wrong use of wavpack switches
- Fix: send Amarok TTMD temporary files to the temp dir!
- Fix: when adding a directory, audio files with dots were not added
- Fix: consider double quote character (") when using vfat compatible path/file names

 amarok 1.4beta1

Could you please add the needed functionality http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9544379&forum_id=37495 to get automatical transcoding working for the media devices in 1.4beta1 or later. It would be great to simply plug your mp3 device in, copy anything (no matter which format) on it and you are done.
Thx,
whilo

Opensource is not a matter of price.

 Error running it

Why do I get:
/home/manu/.kde3.4/share/apps/amarok/scripts/transcode/transcode: error while loading shared libraries: libtag.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
when running the script?
I got taglib 1.4 perfectly installed, and the file libtag.so.1 is in /usr/lib.
Any idea?
Thanks.

Strange, I have exactly the same error. On my laptop it works. Maybe it is because I'm using 64bit linux? Does transKode search for 32bit libraries?

mmm... ask the gcc guys? or is it linus?
seriously... what you ask has nothing to do with this specific program but with os related stuff.
anyway, the provided binary(1) was compiled in a 32bit linux so the answer (for this and any program in this situation) is probably yes(2).

(1)maybe the fact that the package contains a binary executable is not clear enough?
(2)i'm just guessing.

I'm also using 64 bits Linux (Gentoo), but I couldn't get it to work. And the fact that the package contains a 32 bits binary executable shouldn't be a problem, so I don't get it.
If you solve it, please post.
Regards.

Kubuntu Dapper Drake, with the amaroK media player patch from here: http://reserv.at/transcode-0.4-mediadevice.diff (referenced here: http://amarok.kde.org/amarokwiki/index.php/Media_Devices#Transcoding )

./configure works fine.

When I run make, it progresses fine for a while, then I get this:

--paste--
libtool: link: only absolute run-paths are allowed
make[3]: *** [libtranscodewidgetsplugin.la] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/erik/Desktop/transcode-0.4/src/widgetsplugin'
--end paste--

I was able to trace this back to a problem with the QTDESIGNERDIR and thus the qtwidgetspluginsdir set to a null value.

So I installed qt3-designer (should this really be necessary?), and I got past this error to a bunch more (after another ./configure run):

--paste--

This one was a bit more complicated and I didn't really know what to do, although it all seems centered around flacdialogbase.h and flacdialogbase.cpp. Any pointers?

Or, when can we expect a release of the patched version?

(I'm trying to get this whole thing working so I can load songs onto my girlfriend's iPod)

Build it through kdevelop. Apparently kdevelop doesn't transfer all of it's configuration to the autotools scripts, which is why that error is there.

 m4a encoding oddity

by yggdrasilos on: Apr 5 2006

Score 50%

I'm running your transcode 0.4 script with the transcode-0.4-mediadevice.diff patch applied, on amaroK v1.4_beta2, and I'm running into a rather frustrating problem. Whenever I tell it to transcode to m4a, with any of the three pre-defined profiles, it goes through and attempts to transcode the files, but reports "Error encoding /path/file.m4a".

Note what's missing here: any useful info about the error itself. No error code, no pointer to a logfile, nothing.

I've checked my encoder, my decoder, and my gstreamer setup, and all check out fine. So, my question is, how do I see what's going on? My feeling is that it's not passing the right arguments when it calls /usr/bin/faac, but when it suppresses the encoder's output, I have no way of seeing what's gone wrong.

that is correct... i realized that the flags related to tags may or may not work depending on the version of faac being used. the problem is that those flags are passed to faac to compensate for taglib not being able to write mp4 metadata and there's nothing you can do to override that behavior...
for now at least, i would tell you to try downloading and compiling faac from cvs.
you're also right about the logging capabilities. atm, you have to uncomment a define in the code (commondefs.h) and recompile to get a log. i will add that as an option for the next version (wich will be released as soon as i have the time to finish it)

 Transfer to media?

I have just downloaded transkode 0.5 but I'm unable to find the 'add to media device' option in the transkode menu.

How is suppose I have to add tracks to the media device?

Btw, thanks for this *great* script!

 Config is not saved

by spiryt on: May 8 2006

Thank's a lot, it is a lovely amarok script. Invaluable to me as I use ogg play on a symbian phone and converting my playlists easily to a quality 1 ogg's is essential. However, transKode on my pc does not save the profiles if I modify the settings via gui. Modifying config file by hand works and the settings are preserved. I have checked the permissions but everything seems to be in order.

you have to press the save profile button and then apply the settings for it to work.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
