This wizard will allow you to create a DVD from one or more DVD compatible MPEG-2 files. It is designed to be very easy to use. All you need to do is add one or multiple files to the playlist and answer the questions that follow.

You can add a menu that will contain animated thumbnails of the files in the playlist. Creating a menu is optional.

Features include:

* Playlist editor
* DVD menu with multiple pages
* Animated thumbnails in the menu
* Customisable menu graphics
* Add soundtrack from OGG or MP3
* Antialiased graphics prevent flickering on TV
* Both Widescreen and standard 4:3 support
* ISO DVD Image creation
* MPEG2 DVD compatibility checking
* Support for both PAL and NTSC menus

* Kommander >= 1.0 (part of kdewebdev >= 3.3.0)
* ImageMagick 6.2 or 6.3
* MJPEGTools
* Sox
* DVDAuthor >= 0.6.11
* Transcode

Not required (but recommended):

* Xine-UI (for testing the DVD)
* K3B

How to Install:

Just unpack the archive and run the 'Installer.kmdr' script. That's it!

Please contact me if you experience a problem.

Because ImageMagick developers keep changing the commandline syntax for every single version, the KDE DVD Authoring Wizard does not work with versions older than 6.1.0. Also, newer versions are not compatible with their predecessors. That's why you need to make sure that your DVDAuthor version is newer than ImageMagick, because it uses ImageMagick for menu processing.

Please send your complaints about this mess to the ImageMagick mailing list.

 output dir config

Hi, I'm new to the app (just installed 1.2.1).

It seems that it doesn't work properly when the configured output path has a trailing slash. Making matters worse: the auto-completion logic of that text field inserts a trailing slash (at least on my system.)

I managed to reproduce the problem, and fixed it in version 1.3.0.

Thanks for reporting!

Overall I am quite impressed! Thanks for providing this.

  • (Already mentioned in a separate post) Problems with output dir name having a trailing slash
  • Consider better closure to the process. It's unnatural to have to press a button labeled "Cancel" when I've successfully finished what I set out to do.
  • The menu item label for each video is limited to a very small number of characters. I would really like to see that increased.

Thanks again.

 doesn't work

 by heuving on: May 16 2006

I tried it for the second time. Why is it unusable for me?
1. dvdauthor is used to check the files for MPEG2-compatibility. It's done with:
dvdauthor -o dir -f file
With my dvdauthor 0.6.12-alpha-2992 this gives an:
ERR: Must first specify -t, -m, or -x
So - if at all - it's only working for some versions of dvdauthor.

2. After correcting this, I wanted to do a DVD with some 20 clips, either in PAL or NTSC, with 4:3 and 16:9.
Building the menu, I got a message about an incompatible MPEG2-File. After inspecting the logfile. I found out that dvdauthor was called with an empty file argument. I have no explanation for this, because I didn't dare to correct more mistakes after finding a source-comment saying that it was'nt allowed to mix PAL oder NTSC-Files or 4:3 and 16:9.
I didn't test the app with only one or two MPEG - maybe it would work then.
All in all I had the impression, that someone is offering an app which works for him and his needs without mentioning any of the serious limitations it has.

You are using unstable DVDAuthor versions and complain to me that it isn't working... That's funny... :D

You are not saying anything about the required version of dvdauthor in your README. Don't complain about me expecting it to work with any version of dvdauthor, especially if you are warning about the required version of another program (ImageMagick) the script is using but say nothing about dvdauthor.
And I wasn't complaining, only reporting about this. I corrected your script to work with my version of dvdauthor and got on.

My complain is that you are saying that your program is especially for authoring a DVD
"from one or more DVD compatible MPEG-2 files. It is designed to be very easy to use. All you need to do is add one or multiple files to the playlist and answer the questions that follow."
This is a gross misleading statement, because all the files have to be either PAL or NTSC and all have to be either 4:3 or 16:9. This isn't a restriction from dvdauthor or any other program but solely of your application and you should mention this very clear. I have authored quite a number of DVD with MPEG's in different formats - all one has to do is to put every different format in it's own titleset.

I do not say anything about required DVDAuthor, because any reasonably recent *stable* DVDAuthor version will work. I could add a 'Don't Do This And That' list of all stupid things people might do, but I'd rather assume the user knows that unstable of very old versions might cause trouble.

Detailed DVDAuthor version detection may be added at some point in the future.

About the NTSC/PAL mixing thing: This is on the list of many things that need to be added in order to make things as 'fool proof' as you'd expect the wizard to be.

Fortunately, the wizard is not finished yet, there will be many improvements...

Note: The individual chapters do not show up in the menu, only the MPEG files themselves appear.

Your work is really appreciated in the Suse italian community (www.suseitalia.org) but, unfortunately, I have an error executing the script. The error is:

Installer.kmdr: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `

That happens when you try executing the application using the shell. The wizard is not a shell script, you need to execute it using Kommander.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
