Minimum required   KDE 3.4.x

Submitted:  Sep 2 2005
Updated:  Jun 30 2010

Description:

KleanSweep allows you to reclaim disk space by finding unneeded files. It can search for files basing on several criterias; you can seek for:
* empty files
* empty directories
* backup files
* broken symbolic links
* broken executables
* dead menu entries (.desktop files pointing to non-existing executables)
* obsolete thumbnails (thumbnails of non-existing images)
* duplicated files
* orphaned files (files not found in RPM or DEB database).

Results for each criteria are shown in separate tab; files may appear on many tabs if they match many criterias - in this case they are "linked", so you have to mark (or unmark) file for deletion only once! Before actual deletion takes place, you're given an option to create backup archive.

Planned features:
* seeking for orphaned files in Slackware and Gentoo (portage) database
* and more!

KleanSweep consists of KDE-based (C++) graphical frontend and small helper Perl script that performs actual searching. All searches, except for orphaned files, duplicates and dead menu entries are as fast as usual 'find' would be.

This is initial release and may contain bugs. I take no responsibility for any damage caused by this program.

Note: it may compile/work in KDE < 3.4.x, but was only tested in 3.4.2.

Changelog:

* Removed "greedy match" button
* added Italian, German, Spanish and Portugaese translations

Great tool. How about adding the ability to find and remove things like: * Web Browser Cache (both Konqueror and Firefox) * Web Cookies (ditto) * Broken download files (.part)

I'll consider it. Not a bad idea, however I'm not sure if I should duplicate browser's functions (the browsers offer option to clear the cache and keep the cache within certain size). Anyway, thanks, we'll see...

 Errors on KDE 3.4.0

Konsole root
/usr/local/kde/bin ./kleansweep
kbuildsycoca running...
libpng error: Not a PNG file
Launched ok, pid = 7592
>> running as realtime process now (priority 50)
Window Sorry - KleanSweep
Can´t execute kleansweep-helper (exists...). Did you install KleanSweep correctly? (How should I know?) button OK klicked, then mouse turned into clock e.g. wait, seems like program has hung. Cancel button clicked -> program exits, but there is a message, saying

ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 7588, errno = 0

kleansweep-helper should be in your PATH. It is possible you don't have /usr/local/bin in your PATH when running as root. Does it also happen when running as regular user?

1.I forgot to write, that I downloaded v.0.1.2
2.$PATH as user gives
bash: /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin: No such file or directory
3.$PATH as root gives
-bash: /usr/local/bin/../bin/../bin/../bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin:/root/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin: No such file or directory
4.as user in konsole I get
/usr/local/kde/bin> ./kleansweep
libpng error: Not a PNG file
Then I mark e.g. ¨Empty...¨ and ¨Broken...¨, Next, Can´t execute kleansweep-helper (exists in the same dir). Did you install KleanSweep correctly?,OK button click, mousepointer to clock, Cancel -> Program exits without additional messages in user konsole.

I managed to update my PATH via command as root and user via command:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/kde/bin
Now the program works, but I still get the message ¨libpng error: Not a PNG file¨ when starting it.

I also downloaded v.0.1.3. Should I uninstall the previous one or overwrite it?

You can overwrite an old version. The 'libpng...' error is probably caused by broken empty application icons; I'll replace them soon.

You have great ideas, just be sure to polish the interface once you're happy with features. "Select all" button for example.

maybe You could think about support for locate / updatedb commands. In my case my linux makes updatedb win anacron at nights so the database is almost always up to date so u could use locate interface to search the files in many criteria and it would be 1000times faster then the way You are using right now

Good idea, I may consider it in (near) future and provide an option to use locate. Unfortunately for some tests (like orphaned files) ordinary disk scanning will be still the only solution.

Do you know that your program is currently the highest rated application on kde-apps? That means a lot of people consider it very useful. I think it has a lot of potencial, and can turn into a wonderful application. Just keep eye on new ideas, functionality and UI.
I whish you all luck, and many years of (successfull) development!

Thanks... Thanks to everyone who voted for my app. I hope to meet the expectations! I know kleansweep is still buggy and needs polishing, but I keep working on it and read all your comments and emails carefully. Thanks for all bugreports and feedback, I really appreciate it.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
