I want to thank you for soundKonverter!
I used it a lot in KDE 3, and now with the new version for KDE 4 it still work grate!

I have a question, which backend is better, ffmpeg or some other?

ffmpeg supports a lot of formats but you should prefer eg. lame for mp3, oggenc for ogg vorbis, etc.

 Ripping CD files

by MrCrapaud on: Nov 20 2010

First, thank you very much for your app, it is so useful for me !

Unfortunately, I'm experimenting some probems with it in Kubuntu 10.10. When I try to rip CDs, multiple files are always ripped together. Because of this problem, it can take me some hours to only extract the files of one CD !
When I rip all files manually one by one, I don't have any problem, but it's not a very pleasant soution.

I have tried to change soundKonverter settings, by setting the number of files to covert at once at 1, but it didn't change anything. I have also tried to change the CD ripper (even if I don't believe this would be the solution), but I wasn't able to select an other CD ripper in soundKonverter settings.

So, do you have an idea of what the problem is, and how I could solve it ?

Thank you in advance for your help !

LP

normally soundkonverter should only rip one track per device. could you please try to rip some tracks again and send me the log files of lets say two tracks (see below).
also, which version of soundkonverter are you using and how many files are being ripped simultaneously?

creating log files:
1. Try to convert the file.
2. Then open the "Log Viewer" by clicking on "Conversion" in the menu bar and selecting "View logs...".
... The Log Viewer will now open in a new window.
3. By default the Log Viewer will show the log of the soundKonverter application, sending me this log won't hurt.
4. But the more important log is the log for the file you just tried to convert in step 1. To see that log, click on the combo box (drop down box) at the top of the Log Viewer window and select the file.
5. To save a log to a file, click on the "Save to file..." button on the bottom of the Log Viewer.

Thanks for your fast answer!

One of my log files is 5000 lines long. How do I send them to you?

lame was called with a wrong parameter.
i have committed a fix to the git repo.

to avoid this problem, don't use "user defined options" -> "bitrate mode" at the moment. either use "preset" -> "specify bitrate" (will be abr) or "user defined options" -> "quality mode".

another problem will remain, soundkonverter will re-rip tracks if there was en error while encoding, i'll have a look at that, too.

The "specify rate" mode works fine. One last question: when will the fix be added to the repository version? Do I have to wait for the next release of kubuntu?

i'm not involved in kubuntu, so i don't know when they will update it. but you can try to install the ubuntu version from the opensuse build service.
i don't know when i'll release a new version, i would guess in a few weeks.

 Settings not restored fully

In settings I activated all checkboxes, to remember my previous settings, but my settings are not restored at restart:

I choosed in detail-view "enter bitrate" with "192kbps". but always quality "middle" is selected, so I have modify select box every time.

Thank you for your report, you have a very valid point. Unfortunately it would not be a small bug fix but rather a redesign of the way settings are saved.
So I'll have to delay that for the next version.
Until then, you can save your settings as a custom profile, this should be restored correctly.

 Small issu

by bastafidli on: Dec 23 2010

Hi, great app. My encoding to mp3 was failing, but SK just displayed failed in the window without much explanation and the main log didn't show any error. By reading this site I have discovered the other log files (may something to add to GUI or readme) and there I found error

Unknown encoder 'libmp3lame'

The best way how to solve this problem is described in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1385688
and in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1117283

Once I followed these and installed the necessary codecs it all worked.

Thank you for your feedback.
I'll keep this in mind. The problem is that there are a lot of things that can go wrong and my time is very limited. So I won't be able to handle everything.
But it seems that the log viewer dialog should really be redesigned.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
