Description:

NOTE 31-Dec-2003 :: www.kde-apps.org has born !!!! Thank you all, this is my personal contribute.

KFiresaver3D, is a project originated from the great work that is David Sansome's kfiresaver. For those who already tried previous versions, let's say that the screensaver is improved so much. Now there is a setup dialog (thanks David) whith tons of options to fully configure the screensaver and adapt it to your needs! I've also added a 'shading' effect, sound, gFX, the possibility to use presets for options and many other things...

Look at the screenshots; it was very hard to choice three ones..
But you have to see it in motion!!
Note: The screenshots are taken using KoRaL's preset. Fortunately there are more presets and options if you don't like excessive eye-impressing frames ^_^

>> Sometimes it looks better than real fireworks ^_^

** Installation instructions **
untar the package:
- tar xjpvf kfiresaver3d-0.6-leakfix.tar.bz2
switch to that directory and type:
- ./configure
- make
- make install

Changelog:

Last Day of 2003:
-since kde-apps.org is born I uploaded the version that fixes a bastard mem leak on code :-) (the patch has lied on my hd for almost a year). Enjoy

Sept 2002:
-added a configurable shader ('fade effect')
-configurable stars
-sound (yeah, poor by now...)
-many new types of fireworks (rings, double-rings, etc..)
-tons of speedups
-some bugfixes (did I made some bugs?)
-fixed a missing include (thanks to Spiral Man)
-lots of eyecandy ^_^
-a sort of 'show timeline'
-etc.. etc..

 time and include err

by Spiral Man on: Sep 8 2002

Score 50%

first, configure wouldnt run because your time is set to local time, instead of GMT with the proper timezone in /etc/timezone, so i had to run touch * on all the files.

seccond, i had to add #include to the top of firesaver.cpp and particle.cpp

other than that, nice !

: )

ok, it looks like that post didnt work right. the file i had to include was iostream.h

also, perhaps i didnt properly emphasise how fscking awesome the screensaver looks, so let me say again, this looks really cool. thanks

Spiral, you downloaded, tried, fixed, run it and posted this comment about 10 minutes later my addition!! ^_^ compliments!
Anyway, i hope the time problem will disappear in at most 12 hours, right? (i think one hour)
For the second problem.. i tested it on two machines and i didn't need to add such include... pheraps is it something related to wrong timestamps?
Anyway i'm happy you consider it 'nice'.. ^_^
Bye and thanks for your help!

the screenshots were so good, i couldnt wait : )

about the includes, im not entirely sure, it might be related to slightly different versions of gcc or glibc (if you have the 3.x series or something), but i didnt really mess with it enough to be sure. regardless, the extra #includes shouldnt affect the outcome if they arent necessary (since the iostream.h header should have #ifndefs in it)

I included your precious fix in changelog :-) I used 'cout' for output (and i was happy when my compiler didn't ask me any new includes!!).
So now sit down and enjoy the show.. (looks best at 800x600, not a very good thing :-()

 configure problems

by Vardamir on: Sep 9 2002

Score 50%

I'm having additional configure problems, probably due to my local setup.

When I do the following:

[brandon@dell kfiresaver3d-0.6]$ ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt-3.0.5/

I get this error/problem:

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.3) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

I have the correct QT installed there, as it is the one that came with the KDE 3.0.3 RPM distribution for RH 7.3 I downloaded.

Thanks for your help,
Brandon

Can you send me the configure.log file?
you can send it to: asy@libero.it
Maybe in that file there is the solution for your problem...
(also try "locate qt-mt" to see if qt libs dir is set correctly..)
I'm waiting for your news ..

 Screensaver?

Hi

Its really great. Until now I didn't use a screensaver, but now I want THIS :-)

But: It doesn't install itself as a screensaver. Means: I cant select it to be started in kcontrol.

What should I do to make it my default screensaver?

The installation is done by typing "make install" after "make" on the unpacked source directory..
If you tried "make install", did it installed the kfiresaver3D.kdesktop file into some directory? where?

I have RH 7.3, and make install installed it to /usr/local/kde. KDE is by default in RH /usr, so I just made a symlink from /usr to /usr/local/kde, and then ran "make install" in kfireworks. However, it still doesn't appear in the kcontrol menu.

I'm not seeing it appear in
Control Center in KDE 3.0.3 (Suse8)

/usr/local/bin/kfiresaver3d and a

I don't appear to have the .desktop

I guess the install script makes :
cp kfiresaver3D.desktop /usr/local/kde/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers

It hopes this command will put the kfiresaver3D.desktop into the ScreenSavers directory, but if this directory does not exist yet, it just create a file named ScreenSaver.

Solution : consider /usr/local/kde/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers is your missing kfiresaver3D.desktop

I hope this is clear enough.

It installs a kfiresaver3d.desktop to /opt/kde3/share/applnk/System/Screensavers/

KDE doesn't care about any entries in /opt/kde3/share/applnk/System/ScreensSavers,
I've moved all files to an other directory but in Kcontroll all the Screensavers
still apear an still working!

But what ever I've tried: kfirework3d did never apeared in kcontroll's screensaverlist.

Any ideas?

- configure and make without any errors.
- the executable kfiresaver3d works fine when startet at the commandline
- I'm using SuSE 8.0, KDE 3.0.3

I had a similar problem with the Fireworks 3D (GL) not showing up in list of screensavers in the ScreenSaver KDE Control Module. I have a RedHat 8.0 installation. The other KDE screensavers that are in the list are located on my system in /usr/share/apps/kscreensaver/ScreenSavers/

I just copied the kfiresaver3D.desktop file to that directory and viola!

 Mandrake 9.2 Howto

by abienvenu on: Dec 7 2003

Score 50%

I managed to make it work on Mandrake 9.2 (kde 3.1), so I hope this information could be helpful.

1. ./configure --prefix=/usr

2. make && make install

3. cp -a /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/kfiresaver3D.desktop /usr/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers/

Step 3 seems to be Mandrake specific, but is necessary to be able to configure KFireSaver3D as a screensaver.

 XMMS/Noatun-Effect?

Hi

I have another idea: What about a firesaver-plugin for xmms or noatun?! This whould be great: Fireworks reacting to music.

I see one problem: The fireworks have to explode at music-beats but not start from the bottom. So you have to do a mode where explosions happen immediately!

Maybe in the future this will be a noatun/xmms plugin.. i can start fireworks at random and explode them only when a beat is detected. If no beats are detected the fireworks simple fade out or fall down..
Thx 4 your suggestion ^_^

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
