Description:

Network manager for kde.

Allows you to configure different network profiles using all encryptions wpa_supplicant provides (wep, wpa, wpa2 etc) for wireless networks.
Since version 0.4.5 kwlan can connect to unencrypted networks if wpa_supplicant is not available.

Kwlan can also store profiles for wired networks.

Dialup networks can be edited and connected to as well.

Systray icons show connection statistics per interface (can be disabled).

Attention: Since 0.6.0, Kwlan uses kdesu to do administrative tasks so you must be able to run dhclient, ifconfig, wpa_supplicant (see help file)!
New kubuntu binery fixes dependency problems.

Changelog:

Version 0.6.3:
-------------
- Fixed Bug: Setting to show New Interface Wizard was not stored correctly.
- Fixed Bug: Adding new network from Scanning didn't fill in encryption settings automatically
- Fixed Bug: WPA enabled networks were shown as new if wpa_supplicant was not started
- Fixed Bug: access to pppd was not tested correctly
- Access Dialup networks from context menu of interface systray icon.

Version 0.6.2
-------------
- Added option for ad-hoc networks
- Added option to show commands in kdesu password requests
- Shows signal strength in context menu
- Shows unconfigured networks in context menu to automatically add the scanned networks
- rewritten scanning code independent of wpa_supplicant

 sudo does not work

I have a problem with version 0.5.0.
If I start it as root all works fine (both wired and wireless interfaces).

If I start it as normal user with sudo I cannot see any interface!

Thanks for any suggestion!

Hi,

I heard about that from version 0.4.8 on Suse Linux. Can you please tell me the linux version you are using and give me the output (as normal user) of "ifconfig -a" and ay output kwlan gives you when started by a normal user from the command line?

Starting kwlan as normal user gives:

kwlan is then running but no interface is available

Thank you!

Hi,

I added --debug as parameter to kwlan in version 0.5.1. Please tell me what kwlan prints out started as normal user with that parameter. You may send the results per mail as it can be lots of output to tom.michel.at.arcor.de.

Thank!

Hi again.

I have installed the 0.5.1 version and launched the program with the --debug option, but the showed messages are exactly the same few I have written in the previous post.

Hey all,
I really miss this app and hope the previous (most recent) issues are resolved soon as I prefer kwlan over Knetworkmanager. Also, as of 0.5.0 I can no longer compile this on Fedora Core 5, I'll be pasting the make results later on, but wonder if others have encountered this.

 Bug in 0.5.1

In KWlan 0.5.1, the systray icon for my wireless connection never change to weak connection, even when signal strength is 0 (radio off) according to the tool-tip.
Just thought I should let you know.

The reason is this little bit of code in kwlantraywin.cpp (from line 192):

int index = wData.linkQuality.find('/');
if (index != -1)
index = wData.linkQuality.left(index).toInt();
else index = 100;

When radio is off, iwconfig says the Link Quality is 0, not 0/100, hence, index is -1.
I'll have a go at trying to write a patch that can show if radio is off instead. (iwconfig prints "radio off" before "ESSID:")

 Does it works?

 by jirityr on: Aug 13 2006

Score 50%

If I run kwlan, I can not select any Local network and eth0 is pressent and running with correct IP. Scan button doesn't do anything. Second problem is, that I can not get any wireless configuration dialog. I have there only panel with "Local Networks" and "DialupNetwork" (shouldn't be "Dialup Networks"?). In DialupNetworks I can not save the password for the connection. It ask me for root password (I'm sure that I have written it correctly) and it finish with error, that password is not correct. Could you try first if user can run sudo commands without password and if does not, ask for user's sudo password or for root password? And one more problem. If I check "Remember password for next time" - or what it's there writen, then I can not correct the password if I wrote the password incorrectly. Well, you have written nice application, which is not too much usable. Please correct this main bugs.

Hi,

this problem can occur if ifconfig is not in the user's path. In 0.5.3, KWlan will search for ifconfig to avoid this.

As a workaround until release of 0.5.3, you can add ifconfig to your path or run KWlan using sudo.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
