Description:

KatchTV is an "Internet TV" application for KDE, otherwise known as a broadcatcher. It makes it easy to subscribe to "TV" channels from all over the internet in the form of podcasts, so that you can browse channels, download shows, and watch them, all from one convenient interface.

Supported features include:

* Video podcasts ("vodcasts").
* Bittorrent-based broadcatching.
* Audio podcasts.
* Multiple background downloads of media and updates of feeds, all while you watch/listen to your favourite shows.
* Manages any media you download, so that you don't lose track of your disk space.
* Built-in KHTML-based web browser, with specific customisations for this application.
* Automatically subscribes to any feeds you click on while browsing.
* Uses KDE's default embedded media players, for flexible configuration and KDE integration.
* Supports Macromedia Flash movies, if you have a suitable plugin.
* Built-in bookmarks of major vodcast/podcast sites, so you don't have to look to hard for great content.
* Stores episode details along with downloaded media to make tracking easier.
* Allows manually adding any feeds (in case some site makes it awkward to add them
* Can also read standard RSS news feeds, if you prefer not to run separate media and news aggregators.
* Feed for KatchTV updates, so you never have to miss the latest features.

Installation is easy, as long as your distro has PyKDE, PyQt, and a movie player capable of playing videos inside Konqueror, such as Kaffeine or MPlayer. Just untar to some directory like /usr/local, and run the KatchTV program. You can also make a symlink to that executable from a directory like /usr/local/bin, and KatchTV will work out where to find its files. Oh, you seem to also need konsole for PyKDE, although that's probably a bug in PyKDE.

Comments welcome; let me know if you've any problems using it.

Changelog:

* Display feeds in reverse chronological (latest first) order always (fixes a regression)
* Separately track unseen/seen vs. new/old episodes
* Better coloring for new/old/downloaded episodes, so it's easy to see what's new
* Various small bugfixes and improvements
* (internal) improvements to code documentation

(latest update is just to change homepage and download links to KatchTV's new site)

 typo fixed

OOPs, sorry guys; I had a small typo in a last minute change, that was preventing downloads. This has now been fixed. If the tarball you got can't download videos, downloading again should fix it. You may need to clear your browser cache to get the new version, if you downloaded previously.

 100% cpu usage

This runs with 100% cpu usage. There are no errors in the console or indication as to why. It doesn't seem hung. Anyone else experiencing this. I'm using kde3.5.2, with pykde from kde3.5.0, on top of xgl.

Hi Matti. Thanks for catching that. It was a silly bug, where a thread was calling sleep() from inside a conditional, rather than from the main loop. CPU usage is now down from 98% to sub-1% on my system, when it's not actually working on something. You should be able to download a new copy now if you clear your cache.

Thanks again :)

I like this app alot, but was wondering why the GUI completely freezes up while I am downloading a video? I thought that it crashed at first, but after the video downloaded, it came back...

Thanks, it's good to hear that people are enjoying this :)

It shouldn't be freezing up; normally, downloads are very much a background thing. If you can email a full bug report (see the manual under help if you're not sure where to send it), with details of which downloads make it freeze and when they freeze (when you add the download, or when it finishes, etc.), then I'll get that sorted out.

You might be seeing a different problem, though. The one freezing scenario I know of right now is when it's adding/updating/starting-with a very big channel feed. Channels are loaded in the foreground right now, which is normally not a problem, but some really slow servers or huge feeds can make it stall a little. I'll get that fixed ASAP too.

OK, I've added a timeout to feeds, so if that's what you're seeing, the latest version will fix it for you. Otherwise, let me know :)

This seems to have done the trick. It was when beginning the downloading of a new video that was part of the "Channel Directory" but not part of the 'Subscribed Channels' list. The GUI would stay frozen until the download was complete

Thanks for your help.

Hmm. That's strange. tar tvjf only lists a single copy of the files for me, and tar xvjf extracts them just fine. Are you sure the files don't exist already? If you're sure, and you've updated your copy of tar and bunzip2 recently, then send me the tarball you have, and I'll try to figure out what's different between our systems.

OK, I just downloaded the latest tarball (as of 05-MAY-2006 10:43pm EDT) and when I open it with Ark I can see two files called KatchTV/MANIFEST and two of every .py file in the tarball. It extracts fine with only showing the error.

tom@linux:~> tar --version
tar (GNU tar) 1.15.1
tom@linux:~> bunzip2 --version
bzip2, a block-sorting file compressor. Version 1.0.3, 15-Feb-2005.
tom@linux:~> ark --version
Qt: 3.3.4
KDE: 3.4.2 Level "b"
Ark: 2.5.2

SuSE 10.0

Also, as a side note you might want to start defining release numbers so that it is easier to talk about what version someone is using...

Hi tom,

OK, I think I've got this fixed now; seems to have caused by including directories in the manifest as well as files, which lead to tar including the files, and then all the files in the directory. Thanks for catching that.

On release numbers... I really do need to get release numbers INTO the archives; I'm working on a way to do that automatically from bzr, and also to support checking for updates online. In the meantime, you might prefer to download the named tarballs, from here:

http://www.digitalunleashed.com/downloads/katchtv/

or just to track the bzr repository. Hope that helps :)

When I download a Video from the 'Subscribed Channels' I can watch it no prob, however when I download the 'Channel Directories', say ZENcast, I only get gibberish on my screen after the download is complete. It looks like it is loading the video data as text instead of loading it into Kaffeine.

Yes, it's not really intended as a general browser; just as way to browse for feeds to add.

It will easily play any videos that are embedded in a webpage, but currently, if you try to click on a video link directly, it won't support that, due to how the konqueror khtmlpart works.

Supporting it would be quite a lot of extra effort, but it would be useful I agree. So, I'll try to do that in future. Short term, all I could do is make it detect any non-html content, and run it externally.

Again though, the main purpose is to pick feeds, and download/view episodes, not general browsing.

Sorry, maybe I can explain this better :)

In zencast, when you click on a channel, you will see an orange XML button at the top. Click on that, and it will be added to the "Subscribed Channels" list. Once you've subscribed, you can easily see how many new episodes there are, and you can download and watch the ones you like. The manual (click "Help" at the bottom) explains it all a bit better.

OK, I've implemented a failsafe now, which will show a status bar message for things that can't be shown, and will recommend using an external browser. I'll do my best to support browsing through PDFs and movies and all that stuff in future. Thanks for reporting this :)

Sorry, I didn't know that I had to click on the RSS link to get it into subscribed channels...

I wanted to do this with DemocraceTV and clicked on the "Attack of the Show - Subscribe" Link at the top of the page, and instead of getting subscribed to the feed, I simply got the RSS text in the window.

The subscribe did work for Realpeoplenetwork though

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
