Description:

Strigi Desktop Search

Here are the main features of Strigi:
very fast crawling
very small memory footprint
no hammering of the system
pluggable backend, currently clucene and hyperestraier, sqlite3 and xapian are in the works
communication between daemon and search program over an abstract interface with two implementations: DBus and a simple unix socket. Especially the DBus interface makes it very easy to write client applications. There are a few sample scripts in the code using Perl, Python, GTK and Qt. Writing clients is so easy that any Gnome or KDE app could implement this.
Aditionally, there is a simple interface for implementing plugins for extracting information. We'll try to reuse the kat plugins, although native plugins will have a large speed advantage.
Strigi also has calculation of sha1 for every file crawled which allows for fast finding of duplicate files.

Changelog:

0.6.4
- Path fixes to the build system the benefit of windows users (sengels)
- Clean up of class ArchiveReader
- Support for LZMA compressed streams in archives, notably .deb and .rpm
- Remove preceding ./ from file path in tar archives.
- Make parsing ar and deb files easier to abort: useful in e.g. Dolphin
- Better method of removing deleted file from the CLucene
- Do not tokenize the URL in the index to improve polling speed
- Fix the bz2 header check: more bz2 archives are recognized (pino)
- Fix infinite loop on parsing SGI image files
- Fix reading of zip files without central directory.

 Configure?

by liquidat on: Jul 2 2006

Score 50%

When I try to install strigi I still get a clucene missing error with configure.

checking how to include clucene... "failed"

But: clucene is installed: libclucene.so.0 is installed at /usr/lib/ amd the *.h files are installed at /usr/include/CLucene - but even if I add these with --with-clucene= I still get the configure error.

The installed version of clucene is clucene-core 0.9.15

Any idea what to do?

Ok, looks like that the strigi configure script searches explicitly for libclucene.a, a static library - do you really need this? Is it really necessary?

The problem with static libraries is that some distributions, like Fedora Core, try to avoid static libraries at all - normally packages providing static libraries are not accepted by the project. Therefor the static libraries are excluded in the packages - which leads to the problem that an official clucene build for Fedora Core, which would be necessary to package strigi for Fedora Core officially, would not provide this static library - and therefore strigi would not work.

Any idea how to solve this problem?

Are you using Strigi 0.3.2 with cmake?
This looks for the shared version:
"Found CLucene library: /usr/local/lib/libclucene.so"

Nope, it was with version 0.3.1 - I will try now with version 0.3.2.

Thanks for the answer :)

 Exclude beagle

by liquidat on: Jul 3 2006

It would be nice to exclude files written by beagle or other search engines where also indexing data are saved. That would avoid doubling of data.

Have you tried to do something like that? Is it somehow possible, or already implemented?

 inotify?

Score 50%

Hm, I'm asking pretty much, eh? Well, should be the last time know for a bit longer. Additionally, this question is not a problem or something but just out of interest:

Is strigi taking advantage of infotify? Does it use it? If not, why not?

no, not yet. simply not finished. it might not use it at all, seems like there are alternatives in the form of an fuse overlay FS which is supposed to be more efficient or something... the verdict is not out, tough, and strigi might support both ways. looks like vandenoever is talking to the ppl from http://www.glscube.org/ and something fruitfull might come out of that.

 Compile 0.3.2

Strigi 0.3.2 Release - Can't Compile:

Hi since I didn't see a bug report location in the readme, I'll stick my error here ;-)

When I try to compile I get this...

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.5/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: /home/john/Unpack/strigi-0.3.2/src/streamindexer/libstreamindexer.a(query.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/home/john/Unpack/strigi-0.3.2/src/streamindexer/libstreamindexer.a: could not read symbols: Bad value

I get this whether I run cmake without any command line options, or if I run it with cmake -DCFLAGS="-fPIC". I didn't have any problems compiling the last release.

I'm working with a amd64/gentoo system.

Hi John, You seem to've run into a compiler problem. I think this can be avoided by enabling visibility.

Problem seems to be the -DPIC macro is also needed when compiling. See http://strigi.sourceforge.net/index.php/Compiling#relocation_R_X86_64_32_against_.60a_local_symbol.27_can_not_be_used

Sorry, but both of the links couldnt fix my compile-error :(
It`s the same error at the same position as the one of the thread-starter. Adding the DCMAKE_CXX_FLAGS="-fPIC -DPIC" didnt help :(
Any other suggestions?
I REALLY would like to use this one, as Kat or Kerry eat ways too much resources...

Thx

ok, got it :)
Also needed to set C_FLAGS, not only CXX_FLAGS to "-fPI -DPIC".

Thx for this nice app :)
Really doesnt assume that much Ressources.

One thing:
As i see I have to start re-indexing if i changed some files or added new. Could it be possible to add an option to the preferences, where i can set if i want auto-re-indexing if something changed? (What i saw from the code it shouldnt be any problem for you writing such a feature ;))

i have the same problem, and i don't think thats a compiler bug. im running gcc 4.1.

i think the problem is case 4 in http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/index.xml?part=1&chap=3 .

I noticed that the uninstall rules are missing in case you have to make a "make uninstall". You should add these just in case... :/

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
