Description:

Strigi Desktop Search

Here are the main features of Strigi:
very fast crawling
very small memory footprint
no hammering of the system
pluggable backend, currently clucene and hyperestraier, sqlite3 and xapian are in the works
communication between daemon and search program over an abstract interface with two implementations: DBus and a simple unix socket. Especially the DBus interface makes it very easy to write client applications. There are a few sample scripts in the code using Perl, Python, GTK and Qt. Writing clients is so easy that any Gnome or KDE app could implement this.
Aditionally, there is a simple interface for implementing plugins for extracting information. We'll try to reuse the kat plugins, although native plugins will have a large speed advantage.
Strigi also has calculation of sha1 for every file crawled which allows for fast finding of duplicate files.

Changelog:

0.6.4
- Path fixes to the build system the benefit of windows users (sengels)
- Clean up of class ArchiveReader
- Support for LZMA compressed streams in archives, notably .deb and .rpm
- Remove preceding ./ from file path in tar archives.
- Make parsing ar and deb files easier to abort: useful in e.g. Dolphin
- Better method of removing deleted file from the CLucene
- Do not tokenize the URL in the index to improve polling speed
- Fix the bz2 header check: more bz2 archives are recognized (pino)
- Fix infinite loop on parsing SGI image files
- Fix reading of zip files without central directory.

 Mandriva 2006

by yoho on: Sep 15 2006

I compiled strigi on Mandriva 2006 (had a lot of problems first but found out that it was related to my cmake prefix which should be "/usr").

It looks like the strigidaemon stops after a while, probably crashing, when I index all files in my home folder.

The index in 600 Mb and I had to disable inotify andr dbus : no inotify support in my kernel and a more recent dbus is needed than the one in 2006.

Another problem is that the kio_strigi client is giving me an error (without much explaination) after 5 seconds. Hopefully, search.pl is working fine.

hi yoho,

does the daemon crash while indexing? if so, it would be useful if you could find out if a particular file is causing this. you can do so by running 'dummyindexer' on the same directory as you wanted to index.

 problem

by franzf on: Sep 15 2006

First its nice to see a new version of this nice app.

But i have several problems.

1) Here strigi is massive Ressource-hungry.
I cant use my desktop (even music stops...), Cpu: 97%+, Memory full! (1GB Ram + 1GB Swap). Thats for 15min - 1h. Here I even cant open a console to kill strigidaemon.

2) I would like to set the directories strigi should index. I only can do this when strigidaemon is running. When its running soon my desktop is unusable (see 1) )...
I cant find any config file where i could set PATH-Variable what to index.

I think this is a really nice application, it (could) run better then beagle/kat/...
So i hope these things get fixed soon :)

Thx
Franz

Hi Franzi,

This is an unfortunate bug that crept into version 0.3.8. It's related to inotify. We're resolving the issue with haste.
In the meantime you can disable inotify (see README) to avoid the problem.

Ok, thx.
Now with clucene and "-inotify" the indexing works nice.
But if i want to search, strigi is crashing:
strigiclient:
memory running full, if RAM is @ 100% ->
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): St9bad_alloc

and strigiclient crashes.
strigi:/:
Beim Laden von strigi:/?q=mp3&m=10&t= ist folgender Fehler aufgetreten:
Der Prozess für das
Protokoll strigi
wurde unerwartet beendet.
(roughly: Loading strigi:/[...] an error occured:
The process for the protocol strigi terminated unexpectedly.)

With hyperestraier the daemon is indexing documents, but doesnt store any keywords?!? So i cant search for anything ;)

Thx
Franz

this seems to be amd64-related.
On a x86-machine of a friend its working fine (without inotify).

Are you using the PIC option described on the wiki?

It doesnt matter if i compile with or without these options.
But it really seems to be an amd64-related prob.
On a x86-machine it runs perfect, even with inotify enabled!

BTW inotify: If a filename changes strigi adds a new item instead of changing the existing one! I need to re-index (which goes really fast then) to solve this.

If i use kio_strigi on amd64 my xserver crashes ^^ (first thought its been the qt-risky-patch...)
On x86 there is no strigi:/-kio-slave :( Though the file exists...

Thx so far
Franz

I've put ebuilds on bugs.gentoo.org for both, strigi and applet.
Please test if it works for you!

 NFS and samba shares

Hi!
can strigi gracefully handle network directories - indexing them during night and allow all users to use the same index?

 unique words indexed

by gassauer on: Nov 13 2006

I get a very big number - about 500.000 words in some 80.000 documents?

IMHO it's very unlikely that this are the "unique" words but depends on what is counted as unique...

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
