Description:

Strigi Desktop Search

Here are the main features of Strigi:
very fast crawling
very small memory footprint
no hammering of the system
pluggable backend, currently clucene and hyperestraier, sqlite3 and xapian are in the works
communication between daemon and search program over an abstract interface with two implementations: DBus and a simple unix socket. Especially the DBus interface makes it very easy to write client applications. There are a few sample scripts in the code using Perl, Python, GTK and Qt. Writing clients is so easy that any Gnome or KDE app could implement this.
Aditionally, there is a simple interface for implementing plugins for extracting information. We'll try to reuse the kat plugins, although native plugins will have a large speed advantage.
Strigi also has calculation of sha1 for every file crawled which allows for fast finding of duplicate files.

Changelog:

0.6.4
- Path fixes to the build system the benefit of windows users (sengels)
- Clean up of class ArchiveReader
- Support for LZMA compressed streams in archives, notably .deb and .rpm
- Remove preceding ./ from file path in tar archives.
- Make parsing ar and deb files easier to abort: useful in e.g. Dolphin
- Better method of removing deleted file from the CLucene
- Do not tokenize the URL in the index to improve polling speed
- Fix the bz2 header check: more bz2 archives are recognized (pino)
- Fix infinite loop on parsing SGI image files
- Fix reading of zip files without central directory.

Hi,

Strigi is a really nice tool, but why there are not any translations? The last generated template in svn is from June...

Kind regards!

There isn't any .po or .pot inside
at present time.....
before that translator start their
work they need to have some meaning to translate.

Nice to see people want translations already! I shows that userbase is increasing. I will look into what translation mechanism I will use. The strigi daemon is not a Qt application (only some clients are) so Qt's mechanism cannot be used.

Suggestions are welcome.

Why don't discuss this with our translators at their mailinglist kde-i18n-doc [at] kde.org? I'm sure we will find a solution there. Scripty should be able to handle this as well :)

Actually it shows .odt (open office writer) contents under:
filename.odt/contents.xml

but this file has no title and doesn't
exists....

 seamless integration

please have a look at
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=48953

and say what you think about,
basically for strigi it would mean
to strip out all "filename:.*" from
the search field and put what's still
there in the command line.

But for users it would be really comfortable.

 a bug, I suppose

by mattepiu on: Nov 23 2006

Just a note, I noticed that when running strigidaemon as user,
if it finds a file owned by root:root on its path (a file for which it has
not write permissions, but it can read), it crash....

Oh that's odd, I've not encountered this. The daemon will print a message that it cannot read the file, but that's all.

Hum.... I'm just gettin something like
"strigita failed" plus crashes,
and I suspect the root:root files to
be involved in that.

Hi, does anyone have up to date kubuntu packages? The latest version apt-get finds with my configuration is 3.8.2, which isn't working.

http://fboudra.free.fr/debian/strigi_0.3.10-1/
has packages for debian.
Packages for edgy regularly appear there too.

 3.10 error/miss file

by mattepiu on: Dec 7 2006

Score 50%

Sorry, I get :
"/var/tmp/portage/kde-misc/strigi-0.3.10/work/strigi-0.3.10/src/daemon/eventlistener/inotifylistener.cpp:25:27: error: filtermanager.h: No such file or directory"
trying to compile 3.10 .
Where this filtermanager.h file should
come from? Is my dbus too newer?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
