Description:

Strigi Desktop Search

Here are the main features of Strigi:
very fast crawling
very small memory footprint
no hammering of the system
pluggable backend, currently clucene and hyperestraier, sqlite3 and xapian are in the works
communication between daemon and search program over an abstract interface with two implementations: DBus and a simple unix socket. Especially the DBus interface makes it very easy to write client applications. There are a few sample scripts in the code using Perl, Python, GTK and Qt. Writing clients is so easy that any Gnome or KDE app could implement this.
Aditionally, there is a simple interface for implementing plugins for extracting information. We'll try to reuse the kat plugins, although native plugins will have a large speed advantage.
Strigi also has calculation of sha1 for every file crawled which allows for fast finding of duplicate files.

Changelog:

0.6.4
- Path fixes to the build system the benefit of windows users (sengels)
- Clean up of class ArchiveReader
- Support for LZMA compressed streams in archives, notably .deb and .rpm
- Remove preceding ./ from file path in tar archives.
- Make parsing ar and deb files easier to abort: useful in e.g. Dolphin
- Better method of removing deleted file from the CLucene
- Do not tokenize the URL in the index to improve polling speed
- Fix the bz2 header check: more bz2 archives are recognized (pino)
- Fix infinite loop on parsing SGI image files
- Fix reading of zip files without central directory.

 filters

If there are no plans to update strigi for kde 3.x , would be nice to give us
at least an archive-size filters:
actually if strigi find a 400MB+ tar.bz2 file it creates a huge database and there's no way to block
it......... a check (like "don't process archives bigger than 10 Mb" would really help......)

 PDFs by page

One feature I'd really like to see is page-aware indexing and search results.

For example, if I search for some phrase, excluding some other phrase, and it's found in a 400-page PDF, it's not really helpful for a search tool to simply link to the document, where I have to launch a PDF viewer, start another search within the PDF viewer, wade through all the pages containing the negative phrase.

I'm no expert on search engines, but I *think* this could be solved by breaking down documents into sections and/or pages before indexing. Then, for the client side, a new URI scheme, like pdfpage://1/file://localhost/docs/doc.pdf could be provided. KDE could have URI handlers that launched a PDF viewer, specifying the page to go to (if the KPDF people cooperate), or communicating via DCOP to change the page after loading (if they don't, and KPDF provides a DCOP interface for this).

another option might be to let kpdf search for the page when you open it. So KPDF should allow to specify a search term on the commandline, and the search tool could call KPDF/Okular with the searchterm.

Good point. Apple's Spotlight actually does something like that. When it finds a pdf file, opening it automatically highlights the matched items.

Perhaps use a file://home/user/test.pdf#searchquery for that?

Please read : http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/kpdf+search+engines+seamless+integration?content=48953

And then, if you think that's the way to proceed, vote for :
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137649

only 2 users voted it for now....

You may have an older version of libstreamanalyzer installed

I have removed all libstreamanalyzer files - same error.

BTW also SuSE strigi.rpm 0.5.1 provides AND requires libstreamanalyzer.so.0 as well as libstreams.so.0 files - so it might be a sort of self reference ?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
