Description:

***************************
konvenientSUSE will *not* be updated for openSUSE 10.3.

One-click-installer and Community Repositories YaST-modules have made konviSUSE obsolete.

The 10.2 version will remain online but will not be maintained
*****************************

WHAT DOES IT DO?
---------------------
- Add package repositories / installation sources
- Install multimedia codecs
- Encrypted DVD (DVD movies) playback support
- Java and Flash
- Install Nvidia and ATi 3D driver
- Kick ZENWorks

HOW TO INSTALL:
---------------
1) Download the RPM

2) Right click it in Konqueror -> "Actions" -> "Install with YaST"

The RPM depends on kommander-runtime.

HOW TO RUN IT:
--------------

Start it from your menu: System -> Configuration -> konvenientSUSE

Or run the command: konvenientsuse

REQUIREMENTS
------------
- openSUSE 10.2 with ZENWorks package management, openSUSE package management or Smart package manager.
- It works on x86 and x86_64
- A version for SUSE Linux 10.1 is available, but it's not maintained.

KNOWN ISSUES
---------------
- The redirect URLs do not always work well. If you experience problems try again later.
- Do not run the 3D scripts with 3D driver already installed
- There's not much feedback to users.
- Do not have other instances of package managers or package management processes running, while using konvenientSUSE

BUGREPORTS AND ENHANCEMENTS
--------
If anything doesn't work as expected please let me know. Suggestions are also very welcome.

- Write comments below
- Mail to suse [at] linuxin.dk
- or find me (cb400f) on IRC at #opensuse-chat@irc.freenode.net.

Changelog:

10.2_9 - June 26 '07
Updated for new Nvidia packages. Added OpenOffice.org repo.

10.2_8 - May 8 '07
Added new US mirror for Guru repository, and at the same time fixed an error - thanks to zly for reporting. Some minor UI polish.

10.2_7 - March 9 '07
Flash-player and 3D-installation with ZENWorks had bugs too.

 Great Idea but ...

 by google01103 on: Jul 29 2006

Score 50%

When I run the default script I get:
Adding zypp service...
0%
and zen-updater shows no new catalogs

Then again it did add a catlog into Smart

Also the fonts on the first 2 tabs for the name (guru, packman, install-source) are way too tiny. I'm sure this something with my fonts and resolution but is there something that can be done?

Personally I think this is soooo needed and I thank you

The problems you had with the "default" version did they apply to all repos/mirrors? Or just some of them? Do you remember which specific mirrors/repos caused problems?

If you tried "inst-source" maybe the problems you experienced had to do with downloading the 80 megs of repodata aswell as the immense slowness of the parse-metadata-process.

With regards to the layout-issues you mention, this should be a lot better by next release - which I hope will be pretty soon. I knew at release time that gui-layout was pretty bad - but only after testing it on a different system with different fontsettings etc., did I realize exactly how bad it actually is. It's on top of the todo-list.

Thanks for feedback

I retried the default script again and tried to add all the 'reccommeded' and some of the 'additional' from both Europe and USA and I get the same msg in the konsole "Adding zypp service...
0%". After I checked zen-updater and yast2 and no additional repositories were added. I did not attempt inst-source.

I believe I'm current on all the zen/yast/zmd rpm's - have you gotten any similar feedback ?

thanks,

Nope, noone else reported any problems. But that doesn't mean they are not there. Will run some more tests on my own system.

Do you have a network-monitor running and maybe run "top". To see if any downloading or cpu-activity is going on. Maybe something is happening that the konsole output doesn't tell you about (especially I'd look for "parse-metadata" and "update-status". Adding repos to rug (zmd) is a lot slower than adding them to Smart - as repodata is downloaded and parsed instantly - whereas Smart does this later (and faster) when you do "smart update".

I see a very quick blip of 100% activity in zmd, no internet activity and the only konsole msg's are "Adding zypp service... 0%"

Could be a problem with my zen configuration or something else in my setup. I'll try again when you release a new version and since I prefer Smart and the Smart script works you've definetley provide me with something useful.

thanks,

I had a borked zen/libzypp setup so I reinstalled everything and RepoKommander works as described

Now if only I can get zen-updater to stop erroring out

thanks,

PS think this version definetly isan improvment

Good to hear that RK is working for you now and that you like this version better ;)

If you install the patches with Smart or YOU, Zen-updater should eventually work - almost well.

The correct repo for suse-KDE now is:
http://repos.opensuse.org/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1

Thank you for your good job and good idea. I tried to translate your v0.1 to Czech, and fix some bugs, but I was slowly and late :), you made v0.5 first ;)

Nice to hear you're investing time in it.

Don't spend too much time translating v0.5. A new release with more functionality and a name change is imminent.

On top of the shortlist for the new name is: konvenientSUSE

Soon the script will have matured more and the development pace will be less high, should make life easier for translators :-)

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm keeping things simple and installing versions provided by SUSE. The reason I'm going with 1.4.2 is that the plugin will work with firefox on both x86 and x86_64.

i just found and used your software and found it very usefull. thank you for a great job you did.
however there is one thing i didnt like: if you want to add several smart channels, you will spend a lot of time to do it, but just to click once or twice every few minutes. so my suggestion is changing the buttons to checkboxes and adding a button 'apply' to perform all of the selected tasks.

 very good one

it helped me a lot but there's one issue I think You should address - when some yast package management program is open You can't really operate on software because the bases are locked. When You try to open another software management application in yast You get info that another program is using the base and You can't operate on it. There should be simmilar kind of warning in your app because now simply nothing happens when you try to add the source when the base is locked

Hm, error-handling in general is bad. I'll think about what can be done, for now I'll add the scenario as a "known issue".

 Pretty good!

I was sceptical, but this script does its job remarkably well. It couldn't install any 3D-driver for me, but I guess my nVidia RIVA TNT2-card is simply to old for that (yet kS didn't ruin the system with my attempt on installing it).

Only one suggestion: when including the 'KDE-Playground'-channel, it should be set to 'deactivated' by default. I don't think the warning during the setup-dialogue is enough. Beside that, perfect job!

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

Which package management do you use?

The 3D is only for GeForce 3 and newer.. I guess you must use the Nvidia legacy-drivers.

It was mentioned in the kS-Dialogue that my card would not be supported, I just wanted to give it a test to see it it would crash my system (to find out wether I can recommend kS to others). Thanks for pointing out the Legacy-drivers (simply had no time to set this stuff up yet).

On my system I am using smart only, so I can't tell wether kS is adding KDE-Playground to other managers set up on 'active' by default as well, on smart (latest version) it defenitely does. This is actually no big deal for someone who knows about risky channels, but for those who simply add all the additional channels and then do an update without caring too much, this could be fatal. So as long as this could be prevented, it should be done.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
