 No thanks

by PomTom on: Nov 12 2006

Score 50%

1. DNS name resolution still does not work with .local domains.
2. RPM and yast suck completely compared to DEB and tools like apt-get or aptitude. Pretty unconvenient.
3. KDE shipped with Suse comes with pretty ugly default fonts. Is this a freetype problem?

It's not a freetype problem; all is about patents! Have a look at this:http://en.opensuse.org/Optimal_Use_of_MS_TrueType_Core_Fonts_for_a_KDE_Desktop_on_SuSE

and this:

http://en.opensuse.org/TrueType

I hope It'll be helpfull.

smart is included in the distribution and can be used as well as YaST packagemanagement. smart doesn't do deltarpms though, so online update is slower. You also have the choice to use rug or zypper on the command line.

Note that we now have an 'openSUSE package management' option at install time that removes ZMD etc, making package management as fast as on 10.0 and before.

well, i haven't tried it, but i read yast in 10.2 got seriously faster... and smart doesn't support delta-rpm's and other features, so i still think yast is the way to go.

They did find a few bugs that slowed down the software installation tool of suse.
So it should be faster then before.

Having that said, if someone wants to use smart in stead, he/she is free to do so.
No reason to make smart default in openSUSE

 IT'S UGLY

We can see that openSUSE it is dishonourable! The new menù is terrifying, indeed orribile. it is how much more far away is from the concept of “usability”. And it is also ugly to see. You fan SuSE seriously considered to pass to Ubuntu. If you want SMART (that it is an ugly copy of apt-get) you will have how much better is on the market of the distributions: www.ubuntu.com | www.kubuntu.org

I'm a Debian and Kubuntu user, and yes, DEB packages are the best in the world.

The KickOff menu is a great idea in terms of usability.

And you are just a big TROLL.

 openSUSE 10.2 RC1

by xxxSWATxxx on: Nov 25 2006

Score 50%

I have to say : I use openSUSE and I will use openSUSE 10.2 also ! Ok the new startmenu , in the moment ( for me ) it looks a little bit ugly , only a little bit ! They have to work on it , especially at the design ! The design cheap ! Come on work on the design ! AND is it possible , for a user , to bring a new button in , between the Buttons :
"Favorite" , "History" , "Computer" , Applications" , "Leave" ? Can I change that buttons ?
Dont hate YAST , it is THE tool for all on your openSUSE . It take long time , OK , but when you know it what is the problem with it ?

Well this new menu is ugly ( for me ) but is not the issue anyway , the real issue ( and maybe you guys didn't noticed ) is / are _the GNOME depends ( eg: like half gnome
, mono and friends etc ) this thing _NEED_
to run_. A default _KDE_ installation pulls HALF GNOME !?! ( because beagle ? and this kickoff menu ?). This is for sure
a big issue for users _want KDE_ and NOT GNOME...

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
