Description:

Forget about labeling with messy markers and stickers. 4L lets you use LightScribe direct-disc labeling technology with your Linux system. Now you can burn professional, silkscreen-quality labels directly onto CDs and DVDs using the same laser that burns data on discs. It’s easy; just burn data as usual, flip the LightScribe disc over, reinsert it into the drive and burn a precise, iridescent label of your own design.

when I first bought an lightscribe-enabled cd-writer, I was eager to search for an open source program for it only to find out that none was available. And then I also found out why - the lightscribe is for some stupid reason heavily protected format, you have to sign an NDA etc to get the specifications.

So it is quite surprising for me, that we do now have a lightscribe-enabled software. Thanks for the company for making this happen!

And as for those of us, who like open source - we can only show our "appreciation" by not buying anything having lightscribe written on it. Half a year ago I also sent an inquiery to lihgtscribe.com asking for reasons why not let the opensource community use this. Didnt get any answers unsurprisingly.

How would they open-source it?
a.f.a.i.k, to be able to use lightscribe technology, you have to pay a licensing fee to HP.

By that you get to modify the software (as nero did) but i dont believe they can just open-source it though...

 Support LaCie

 by BorgQueen on: Oct 20 2006

I first bought LaCie products because of their quality and because of the K3B team's recommendation. When I heard they were supporting open source, it was clear they had foresight. A good indication the company might live longer than others. With this effort, its clear they are taking FOSS users and FOSS seriously indeed.

Well done, LaCie and K3B.

but i dont use non-free-software.
and my burner doesnt support lightscribe anyway.

but then again if the software was free, i would maybe buy a new cdwriter.

 segfault :-(

 by daphreak on: Oct 20 2006

All I get when starting the gui is a segfault:

strace /usr/4L/4L-gui
execve("/usr/4L/4L-gui", ["/usr/4L/4L-gui"], [/* 33 vars */]) = -1 EFAULT (Bad address)
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Process 8225 detached

I'm running Kanotix RC4 (updated) with a Self-compiled Kernel 2.6.18. I used alien to convert the .rpm-files to .deb-files.

Thx for the help. I'm still not sure what's wrong:

$ ldd /usr/bin/4L-cli
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
liblightscribe.so.1 => /usr/lib/liblightscribe.so.1 (0xb7dd0000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7dbd000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7cde000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0xb7cb9000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7cae000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7b7c000)
libstdc++.so.5 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 (0xb7ac2000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000)

$ ldd /usr/bin/4L-gui
ldd: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (135)

Well, problem solved more or less. I just don't use the GUI. I created a template for OpenOffice which I "print" using 4L-cli.

Have a burner, which is lightscripe enabled. Don't know, if I'll ever use it, but a lot of thanks to LaCie for supporting FOSS.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
