Description:

A kool dock for KDE. It attemps to resemble the Mac OSX dock. This is improved koolDock v0.3 (which is base on ksmoothdock 2.1), which isn't my program, but it isn't officailly developed for about two years.

Features:

App Launcher.
On Screen text display (over icons).
Drag&Drop app list.
Auto-Hide.
Nice hide-show animation.
Transparency.
Xinerama support.
Others.

If you experience problems compiling KoolDock please do the following:
#
# make -f Makefile.cvs
# ./configure
# make; make install

IMPORTANT: For GNOME users - if you experience problems with launchers (can't open and edit), you probably don't have KDEbase istalled. Installing this package should solve this problems.

IMPORTANT: If you have something wrong in settings, and kooldock don't appear, you can run
# kooldock -o
to have preferences window at start.

If you have any problems or bugs with kooldock, you can post information about it in comments or send it to bisiek op.pl (after bisiek insert 'at' symbol).

I prepare only source and I probably can't help with packgages made by other people.

If configure script fails while checking X server, you probably need to install the xlibs-dev package. If it won't help try these: build-essensial libqt3-mt-dev libqt3-compat-header kdelibs4-dev kdebase-dev. Thanks to Mrmonday for the solution.

SVN repository checkout:
svn co https://kooldock.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/kooldock kooldock

I can't continue developing Kooldock - I won't stop working on it, but that work will much slower than now. If you want to help - I will help you to understand the code.

It's not possible now. I'm going to write it in future. There are a few big changes in code to make it possible, so it'll take me some time.

Done. Compiled on kubuntu edgy eft (probably works on debian too). Get it here:

http://bio.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/people/pehses/kooldock_0.4.3-1_i386.deb

Not sure how to upload it to kde-apps.org. Anyone?

 installation problem

by miguipda on: Jan 21 2007

Hi,

I installed all the needed autoconf and automake programs.

I followed what is precised in the README file to install kooldock under my kubuntu 6.10.

When 8 do the ./configure command I receive this error :

checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

Then the make; make install doesn't work. Normal.

Then What must I do to be able to install your so usefull program ?

Sincerely thanks,

Have a nice day,

Miguipda ;-)

Hi

Hmm, maybe this will help:

./configure --prefix=/usr/include/kde/
or
./configure --prefix="/usr/include/kde/"

with this : ./configure --prefix=/usr/include/kde/
I receive :
checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

and with this :
./configure --prefix="/usr/include/kde/"
I receive :
configure: error: expected an absolute directory name for --prefix: ”/usr/include/kde/“

So, it seems you haven't installed kde headers. Try install kdelibs-devel, kdelibs-dev or what name it has for your distro.

Hi,

Your kooldock sure looks, well, kool :), but when I run ./configure I get an error message: "no such file". What could the problem be?

Looking forward,

Alex aka Trueash

Call mkae -f Makefile.dist first.

Thank you, it worked this time! Although I'm sure I did run that command the first time.

 Xinerama support

by yodahome on: Jan 25 2007

Score 50%

Hi!

This is a really nice app, I looked at different mac-like docks, they all seem to work pretty slow or not a tall.

Yours actually appeared and runs smoothly, but there is one thing:

I have two screens using one desktop where the right screen (my dfp) is the primary screen and the second is on its left. So when I activate xinerama support, the dock naturally appears on the second screen (=the left one). However, the resolution on the second screen is actually lower than on the first screen, so the dock can't be seen.

I thought I can cheat on the prog by giving a large enough left screen res so the dock appears on the right screen, but I couldn't set it higher than 2048. Would it be possible to make positioning more flexible?

Thanks!

Hi

So i'll add one more option - offset to make choose on which screen kooldock have to appear.
But, i've never seen xinerama, tell me, whether there are the same height on each screen?

Well, the height doesn't need to be the same in xinerama. My left screen (secondary) runs in 1152x864 while my right screen (primary) is at 1280x1024. Still it is one desktop.
But I guess that's not a common usage most people probably use the same resolution on their screens.

This is the best Dock I have seen. Thanks you for great software. Good thing is unlike the others it doesn't effect the window size. Runs great, no crashes or slow responses seen as of yet. Easy to configure and customize. Thanks for the .deb package too!

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
