KDE Accessibility Application

Minimum required   KDE 4.x
Downloads:  1813
Submitted:  Jan 1 2007
Updated:  Jan 1 2010

Description:

A KDE 4 version of ssh-askpass with KWallet support.

Debian packages for the KDE 3 version can be found in Lenny. Packages for the KDE 4 version should arrive in unstable within the next days.

Ksshaskpass is also shipped by Ubuntu, Fedora and Mandriva. Please notify me, if you know of more distributions.

Changelog:

0.5.3
* Disable rpath of the binary.

0.5.2
* - Do not read password from wallet, when ssh-add tells us that the former
passphrase has been incorrect. Fixes an infinite loop, when the wrong
passphrase has been stored in KWallet.
- Replace 'password' with 'passphrase'.
- Thanks to Glennie Vignarajah for noticing both and the initial patch.
* Wrap Wallet-Object in std::auto_ptr to make sure it is always freed.
* Add REAME explaining how to use ksshaskpass.

0.5.1
* Install manpage into correct directory.

0.5.0
* Port to KDE 4.

0.4.1
* Add manpage.
* Apply patch written by Gustavo De Nardin to return with an error, if the user cancelled the input. Thanks Gustavo.

0.4
* New maintainer Armin Berres. Hans van Leeuwen vanished -- thanks for his work so far.
* Use CMake as build system and remove all the Autotools related files.
* Only show the option to save the password if the wallet could be opened before.
* Close wallet after we used it.
* Some minor fixes.

Is there going to be a new project home page for ksshaskpass, or is this it?

Thanks,
Jason

Nope, no plans for a homepage.
Maybe I'll try to get this into KDE 4 once I've finished the KDE 4 version.

If there isn't going to be a real home page, could you perhaps put some information up as to what your software does and in what kinds of situations it might be used in?

 KDE4 version

While we're waiting for trigger-debian to finish his KDE4 version of Ksshaskpass, I've coded up my own KDE4-KWallet implementation of askpass, available here: http://www.mattwhitlock.com/kwallet-askpass.sh

Simply add a new folder to your wallet called 'ssh-agent' and add a password to it named as the full absolute path of your SSH private key file. Then put this in ~/.kde4/Autostart/ssh-add.sh:
SSH_ASKPASS=/path/to/kwallet-askpass.sh ssh-add < /dev/null &
(Obviously, replace /path/to with the actual location of kwallet-askpass.sh.)

Hi,
If possible can you tell me how this works. I noticed that this thing does not even ask me for a password to access wallet.

If your wallet is already open, you don't need to enter a password. You will, however, be asked whether you want to allow the script to access your wallet, but you can opt to always allow that. If you close your wallet, then the first application to access it subsequently will cause it to prompt you for your wallet password to open it again.

OK That explains all. I already have Gmail notifier running which starts first.
Thank you.

I am having mixed success with this script. It works some times and some times it fails. How can I make it working correctly. During start up I already have another application running which accesses kwallet. Will that affect the script?

I have three applications starting at login that access the KWallet: Kopete, KMail, and kwallet-askpass. Sometimes Konqueror is a fourth if I've left it open on a password-protected page when I last ended my KDE session. While I do see variation in which application is the one to trigger the wallet password dialog (it's a race), when I input my password into that dialog, all applications needing wallet access are then able to access it, including kwallet-askpass.

Do you find any error output from kwallet-askpass.sh in your .xsession-errors?

There are no errors in .xsession-errors.
And I can see that ssh-add is running from the process list. Why is it remaining as a background process.

This is the content of my .kde/Autostart/ssh-add.sh

SSH_ASKPASS=/home/jithine/bin/kwallet-askpass
ssh-add < /dev/null &

If I run this from terminal it works and adds the keys to agent.

Do you have that on two separate lines? If you have the variable assignment on a line by itself, then you need to export the variable so ssh-add can see it.

Your choice, either:

SSH_ASKPASS=/home/jithine/bin/kwallet-askpass ssh-add < /dev/null &

or:

export SSH_ASKPASS=/home/jithine/bin/kwallet-askpass
ssh-add < /dev/null &

I fixed some bashisms in the script prior to your redownloading it, so that's why you got different errors.

Now it seems the KDE Wallet is not connected to your D-Bus session bus. It Just Works™ out of the box for me on Gentoo, so I don't know what you'll need to do to get the KWallet onto your session bus so my script can talk to it.

Do you even have a session bus running? Is DISPLAY set in the environment in which you're running kwallet-sshadd?

Well, the system bus is provided by the "dbus-daemon --system" process that should be running as the messagebus user. But that's not the bus you should be interested in for KWallet. KWallet operates over the session bus, which is provided by the dbus- daemon process running as your user. You should also see a "dbus-launch" process started by your user.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
