Ksshaskpass

   0.5.3

KDE Accessibility Application

Score 79%
Ksshaskpass
zoom

Minimum required   KDE 4.x
Downloads:  1811
Submitted:  Jan 1 2007
Updated:  Jan 1 2010

Description:

A KDE 4 version of ssh-askpass with KWallet support.

Debian packages for the KDE 3 version can be found in Lenny. Packages for the KDE 4 version should arrive in unstable within the next days.

Ksshaskpass is also shipped by Ubuntu, Fedora and Mandriva. Please notify me, if you know of more distributions.

Changelog:

0.5.3
* Disable rpath of the binary.

0.5.2
* - Do not read password from wallet, when ssh-add tells us that the former
passphrase has been incorrect. Fixes an infinite loop, when the wrong
passphrase has been stored in KWallet.
- Replace 'password' with 'passphrase'.
- Thanks to Glennie Vignarajah for noticing both and the initial patch.
* Wrap Wallet-Object in std::auto_ptr to make sure it is always freed.
* Add REAME explaining how to use ksshaskpass.

0.5.1
* Install manpage into correct directory.

0.5.0
* Port to KDE 4.

0.4.1
* Add manpage.
* Apply patch written by Gustavo De Nardin to return with an error, if the user cancelled the input. Thanks Gustavo.

0.4
* New maintainer Armin Berres. Hans van Leeuwen vanished -- thanks for his work so far.
* Use CMake as build system and remove all the Autotools related files.
* Only show the option to save the password if the wallet could be opened before.
* Close wallet after we used it.
* Some minor fixes.

 How this is supposed to work

 by jithin1987 on: Dec 31 2008

Score 50%

When I used gnome and I ssh to a machine ssh askpass aska for my passphrase in a dialogue box and adds it to ssh agent. But in kde with ksshaskpass I do not see that happening. I have to run ssh-add from krunner to activate ssh ask pass.
On konsole it does not get activated and i have to type my passphrase every time I do ssh.

Finally I added a README file. You can find it in the tarball.

 Packages

Packages for openSUSE, Fedora, Kubuntu and Mandriva are available in the openSUSE build service repository home:llunak:kde (see http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Build_Service for installation instructions).

The openSUSE packages are integrated with openssh (use the openssh-askpass package from the repository or wait until the change is accepted for the factory package). The remaining packages just plain include the application, as I don't know how to integrate ksshaskpass with other distributions.

 Don't aks for wallet password

 by olenz on: Jul 7 2009

There doesn't seem to be another place to file this, so I do it here:
I know that ksshaskpass primary virtue is to be able to store SSH password in the wallet.
However, I would prefer *not* to store my ssh passwords in the wallet, but use the app only to have a KDE password dialog. Unfortunately, ksshaskpass asks for wallet access before asking for the ssh password itself and whether or not to store it...
Therefore, I have to enter the wallet password, although I do not want it to store the password.
Would it be possible to change this behaviour?

Ok, I see that this doesn't really work - after all, you first have to check whether or not a password is already stored in the wallet.
Still, this is somehow annoying. Anybody got a good idea on how to solve this?

I think I could add a secret option in a config file to disable the wallet integration.

 not working as intended

Its asking for both ssh passphrase and kwallet password. But not always,

This is how I am using it. I have added ssh-add in my kde autostart. Ideal behaviour is it asks for kwallet password and reads from it.

But its asking for both kwallet password and ssh passphrase.

I have also seen this behavior. I think this may be a race condition in the kwallet code.
ksshaskpass just asks for the passwrod of the key, if it could not open the wallet or not password has been stored.

great app, but is there a way to make this work with gpg-agent?

i tried, it but all i get is errors :-(

$ eval "$(/usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon --pinentry-program /usr/bin/ksshaskpass)"
$ echo "test" | gpg -ase -r 0x12341234 | gpg

You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
...
...

gpg: problem with the agent - disabling agent use

When i use

$ eval "$(/usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon --pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-qt4)"

it works.

 Minor issues

Hi, the .desktop files has a couple of minor issues, the Encoding= key is deprecated, so it should be removed.

Also the Icon= doesn't seem to exist any more, I suggest changing it to 'dialog-password' which exists in both the gnome and oxygen icon theme.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
